Yes, most tech support places seem to have reps who have thick Indian accents. Its very hard to understand them with all the technical jargon as it is. Throw in the accent, and it's a lost cause for me.

Here's a funny twist- I have an Indian friend raised here in America. When she went there to volunteer for a year, everyone spoke English (as it is one of 2 official languages there) but nobody understood her American accent. She had to speak with an Indian accent for them to understand her, and when she came back to Chicago it was a few weeks before she was speaking like her old self again

Josh, take a deeeeeeeeeep breath... hopefully someone here will be able to help you

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR CONCERNS!!!

okay, here is the problem:

Norton Internet Security 2005 just ran it's live update, and installed some new features.. which is totally normal... it's what it's supposed to do, BUT... now i can't check my e-mails, which is through Microsoft's Outlook Express. I think this is a firewall issue, because i think the firewall was reconfigured during Live Update.

So I call my DSL provider, and they tell me to call Symantec (Norton) Tech. Support, and I swear i couldn't understand 75% of what he was saying. I felt terrible asking him to repeat himself over and over, especially because he was being very nice.
THEN... THEN... are you sitting down? He said to fix this problem i would have to give him my credit card number and would be charged 30 dollars to fix this, because it wasn't really a norton error, but an IE error. ummmm.... i was already out of patience with our thick accented friend, and loudly told him that everything was running smoothly 5 minutes earlier, and after symantec ran live update things went wrong... SO it IS YOUR FAULT, and FIX IT FOR FREE!

anyway i had to talk to a supervisor, and i had already planned to calmly tell him/her that I wish they had someone to speak plain english there... but when the supervisor comes on the phone... he's even worse with his little accent.

i was like... LOOK... WDWMAGIC sends me E-mails to my forum updates, and right now i'm not getting them. FIX IT QUICK or hear the wrath of WDWMAGIC. lol.

i just went and had some cake, and i'm feeling much better... okay
any ideas on how to fix this problem on my computer?

The answer is simple (but you are not going to like it). Uninstall Norton Internet Security while you still can! Replace Norton (Symantec) products with such things as Zone Alarm (firewall) and Avast (Antivirus). They are free and work much better than anything Norton has to offer!

ugh. after i just bought a subscription to it for 40 dollars.

i disabled norton and the e-mails worked fine, so it's the new update for sure to norton that did it. it's worked fine with norton for the past few months. thanks for the product info woody, never heard of either, but i'll look into them.

They have thick Indian accents because the companies have discovered it's cheaper to set up call centres in India where they can abuse the labour there for about one third the same as their British equivalent and I'm sure it's an even bigger "saving" on American employees as they get paid more than Britons.

One of the reasons I ditched AOL when broadband became available to me in my area is that their Indian based tech support is a joke. So is Dell's - they have lost a lot of sales because of it.

For what it's worth - I work for a software company and part of my job is....you guessed it...tech support ;)

However I have been complimented on my ability to speak plain English to our customers.

From a tech support side of things, the biggest issue with customers is that most refuse to admit when they have messed up. If anyone has been fiddling with settings - please admit it as this makes our life soooooo much easier. Tech support folk will love you for admitting a mistake.

Actually, when I called Microsoft, I got a very nice, comprehensible woman with a slight Midwestern accent. The weird part is, when I called AOL, I got an Irish dude...

that happened to my mom
we took the computer to the guy who built it (also Indian...interestingly enough, but I generally dont have a problem understanding the accent, cuz my dr has it too)

anyways
i think he said it was a firewall issue, and he installed a spyware blocker thingy too.
try a different virus thingy

i hope my "technical jargon" was understandable...i dont know the real words for things so i just use "thingy"
