I ve learned french for 5 years and stil wouldnt be able to tell you, i just took my GCSE speaking exam and ended up using spanish in it and ive never learnt spanish:dazzle:
The only sentence i manage to say (and it probably makes no sense to a frenchman) but its 'Je parler au francais, petite.
Which translated is:
I speak french, small.

Even though I don't speak french it is most likely a line for line translation of the english lines, I can tell you this for the simple fact everything in canada is said in both french and english for they are both the offical language of canada and canadians are supposed to be bilingual even though that is rarely the case, lol.

The version you gave is the direct translation of the french version. On the canadian government website, you can find the english version of our national anthem:
"O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

The french version is the original one, the lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Many english versions were composed over the years, but the one I quoted above is currently used in Canada.

Many times our anthem is split mid-song between English to French, and back to English. Since we sing the anthem every school day, I'm totally substituting that one in sometime. :lol:
In case some are wondering what the French version is:
Since the literal translations are often far off of the current English lyrics, sometimes we try translating mid-song. "We transport the cross! Our history is p0opy! We have brilliant exploits!"
...Actually, looking at the real translation, we weren't that far off. :lookaroun

Every time I hear O Canada (usually at a baseball game :lookaroun ) they sing in English and French...do they sing 2 different songs or just translate one to the other? ( I do not speak French)
I just figured that they sang one stanza in English and then one in French. :shrug:

Are you talking about the Canadian National Anthem (not Disney related so not sure why you'd ask that LOL) or are you talking about the Canada song from Epcot?

I've also heard versions where the last 3 lines are also back to English. :shrug:

When I was 10 years old, the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays joined Major League baseball. Our teachers in school made this big HUGE hissy deal about how the Canadian anthem would also be played at those games. I think they were scadalized.
Anyway, we learned O Canada in 5th grade, with a small difference. My question is, did we learn it incorrectly, or was there a change in the last 40 years?
