Interesting story about D23 Expo in the OC Register newspaper. Ticket sales are weak, local hotel occupancy hasn't gone up much during this very slow period, and this might be the one and only D23 Expo ever.

It sounds like Disney is now backing away from the concept of this being an annual extravaganza. They've got the Anaheim Convention Center booked every September through 2012, but now are not committing on whether D23 Expo will return next year.

A shame this D23 thing launched in a horrendous recession, as it looks like this years D23 Expo could be a one hit wonder and will not return anytime soon.

Kind of like that Disney Yearbook annual thing they launched in 2005 with an announcement it would continue annually. And then it disappeared after just one edition that didn't sell well.

This makes me look forward to going to D23 Expo on Friday even more. It's possible it will be the only time it ever happens, at least on this massive scale.

Here's the OC Register story, with a map of the event and lots of other nifty insight. http://ocresort.freedomblogging.com/2009/09/07/tens-of-thousands-expected-at-disney-expo/16785/

The article itself doesn't really say that. It just has that quote from Miceage that ticket orders were less than expected so far.

Make no mistake, this is the mother of all Disney events

Sad. It has potential.

This does say something HUGE about costs, AND VALUE, though.:lookaroun:wave:

Front page has been updated with the links that have been posted. I may keep track of these things on my blog as well, if I elect to do so I'll post a link to the D23 related content on the front page as well.

The article also says this, quoting the president of the OC Convention Bureau...

"Disney already has committed to holding another expo in Anaheim. But the company isn’t sure when that might be – whether it will be an annual event or every five or so years. Disney tentatively is holding dates for next year, Ahlers said."

Obviously Disney is not going to say anything about putting off future D23 Expos. At least not now. But it's looking weak from a sales and ticketing perspective. The scale and scope of this thing is HUGE, and it must have cost Burbank a ton of money.

At best I think D23 Expo takes a couple of years off and maybe returns to Anaheim in 2011 when the DCA makeover is nearing completion. And it will probably be a smaller, scaled down version of its 2009 self.

At the risk of saying it, but what do they expect from something with a pricetag as big as this?

Except that Figment's relatively obscure in the grand pantheon of Disney characters. Hitchhikers on the other hand are very recognizable Disney park-wise, plus are representing the multiple Haunted Mansion sessions and the 40th anniversary of the ride.
Quite unfortunate for Figment there. :(

But at least the ghosts will supposedly be a centerpiece for the parks, if I understood it correctly. :animwink::lol:

Given the magnitude of this event, and since Steve won't be posting anything firsthand himself (at least, any faster than any of the links posted by the OP) it would seem that a sticky would be in order here.

I, for one, cannot wait to hear the reports!!!

I agree. I have no idea how much a ticket to ComicCon in San Diego costs, or the BlizCon here in Anaheim costs. But things like the OC Auto Show are just 10 bucks, and you get a free year subscription to Motor Trend with your ticket.

37 dollars per day for D23 Expo is steep. Or over a hundred dollars for all four days, plus your 75 dollar year membership dues for D23.

It looks like they were trying to make a profit off this D23 Expo thing, which if true will be the downfall of the entire model for this event and concept.

Sad to think this may be a one-year only thing we'll never see the likes of again anytime soon. At best, maybe it will return in 2011 or 2012 on a much smaller and cheaper scale?

It all makes me look forward to my visit on Friday even more. I may go again on Sunday, just for kicks if its as good as it looks.

The stupid thing is that they expected this to be a blowout right out of the box, in a steep recession no less. You would think they would realize they need at least one or even two years to build a strong buzz so that people in Ohio or England realize they simply have to get to Anaheim next September for the next D23 Expo. That's how you build a concept like D23 Expo.

ComicCon didn't start out HUGE. It started as a little thing in a hotel basement and grew over the years to the major pop culture event it is now. Burbank should at least give D23 Expo two or three years to establish itself and make people realize they need to budget and plan a trip to Anaheim the following year. We all don't live on expense accounts that someone else pays for. Anyone outside of SoCal will need to budget and plan a specific trip to Anaheim for D23 Expo in future years, if it happens in future years.

Yeah, but regular guests probably don't have as much of a passionate hate for it as said Serious Business fans do. Plus it's not the Red Lantern recruitment tool that JIYI was.

Whoa. There's a reference I didn't expect to see on this board...
