Yes, we would have to rent a car. So factoring in that, gas, parking etc, it gets tricky adding it all up. Plus my husband drives a lot for work so he likes the added bonus of not having to drive all week. People always complain about the bus system but we’ve never had any major issues. It’s a huge bonus of staying on site. I actually think they do a pretty amazing job when you think of the number of buses they have going at any given time. However, we are always looking to save money
:)
We've stayed at several on site and transportation has always been great! But I'm also not the person that knows the times they are supposed to run but we generally catch one or wait a few minutes. I was hoping we could find an off property hotel that saves us some money without feeling g cheap...

Where would I find BC? When I googled it, the rooms were going for $700...

I dont know specifics but I just looked on Hotels.com and found the Wyndham at Bonnet Creek for $339 and the Hilton at $269

I also noticed The Grand Orlando Resort at Celebration which is a Good Neighbor Resort on there and its going for $179 though you would have to have your own transportation however it a nice resort and not that far away.

Just to piggyback a little, are there any off property resorts that have a decent bus/shuttle system? From my little research on the 7 DS resorts, 4 share one bus and 3 share the other. Reviews are decent (set schedule & run on the 1/2 hour) but the biggest complaint is that it’s hard to make it to the parks prior to rope drop (which is a huge factor for us).

Could you use Uber to get to the parks for rope drop, and then just use the shuttles to get back? Cheaper than renting a car and paying fees to park etc I would think.

If you are trying to find the best of boths worlds, I would try ClarionLBV(I think you have?) and the AllStars are going to be the cheapest of the Values!

Clarion is at the top of the list. We also have a holiday inn that was recommended and we also get a friends and family discount at. My mom definitely wants to go so that may change things a little.

Another avenue for you to search is RENTAL HOMES! They can be usually rented for as low as $89/night! They usually come with 2-3 bedrooms 2 baths(?) AND A COVERED PRIVATE POOL! To me that would feel like being home and not like I am on vacation...but it might work for you!

I looked before and it ended up being more than we wanted to spend just bc of the cleaning fees etc. That's was last year though.

If you do decide to stay at an All-Star resort I recommend All-Star Music. All-Star movies is kind of outdated and in my opinion All-Star Sports isn’t my thing as I’m not a big sports fan. All-Star music has great pools and the breakfast is really good in my opinion. The only thing not so great is if you get a room farther away from the main lobby part. If you get a hotel room closer thoe it’s amazing. Another thing to do is make sure you give yourself around an hour for transportation, just because it’s a lot farther from some parks especially Magic Kingdom. It is defiantly not bad thoe I’ve stayed a few times.

We have also stayed off property a few times. I 100% recommend Florida Sun Vacation homes. It is my families favorite renting company. I don’t know if this is out of the question of your family but, getting another family to come as well is great. It helps you to split the costs and depending on the children’s age they will probably be more entertained. With little kids vacation homes are great because it’s like being in a house! The kids have a game room to play in and they can have there own bedroom to be in. Their is also a park and smal water park like area on the propert. It is all a matter of what your family enjoys!

All star movies is our favorite simply bc the tou story area...the kids love the giant woody and buzz and the door. It brings back lots of great memories. As far as outdated I guess we never paid much attention lol. When we stay at the value resorts all we do is sleep there. I am looking at music though bc of the family suits they offer which we may need since my mom is coming with this time. I wish we could do the cabins again but at $350 a pop plus the extra cost of the golf cart it just puts us higher than we want for this trip.

My family and I love Music, the two rooms are nice and it feels almost like a little house. If your spending most of your time at the park I find it perfect as you can end the day in a guitar or piano shaped pool. But if you plan to spend a lot of time at the resort I would recommend spending the little extra as long as it is in the budget.

Oh absolutely! That's why we splurged last year on the cabin...we knew we wanted down time and it was perfect for us...outdoor space and we felt like our kids could really be kids and not worry about neighbors etc. This trip we are planning so far is only 4 nights so we are thinking 2 MK days and 1 HS day for toy story land (again...kids are soooooooo excited!!!). Given that it is a quick trip we don't want to spend a ton on a room we will barely see. Resort fees, parking, etc are adding up off property where I may just say forget off property and pay the extra $150 for on property lol!

We could probably consider this for our next trip. It depends on how old our kids are and what the car seat situation is :)

Because the Swan the the Dolphin aren't Disney owned resorts they're not on the Disney site.

The Swolphin is indeed listed on the Disney site.

I might point out that Swan/Dolphin guests do get MagicBands, Disney Transportation, EMH and 60-day FP.

You don't get MBs from the Swolphin. And Disney Transportation includes the parks but not the airport.

More on the Swolphin...

So, some background on the Swan and Dolphin: The Swolphin both is and isn't a Disney hotel. Basically, Disney is letting an outside hotel chain run a Disney resort rather than run it themselves. They did this to attract conventioneers who were used to hotel chains and had points with them (originally Westin and Sheraton, both bought out by Starwood, which is now bought out by Marriott).

It is a Disney resort:

* Disney advertises the Swolphin as a Disney resort on their site and it shows up in resort searches.
* Disney has a say in how they operate.
* Disney characters show up for their character meals.
* Disney gets a share of their earnings.
* Disney provides free transportation within 'the bubble' (buses and ferries, but not Magical Express to/from the airport).
* Disney staffs their Disney ticket center.
* If you stay at the Swolphin, parking is free at the parks (but not at the Swolphin itself).
* You get Extended Magic Hours
* You get the 60 day window for FastPasses.
* Park purchases can be sent to the Swolphin for pick-up later.
* You get all the golfing perks of staying at a Disney Resort

It is not fully Disney:

* You can use Starwood/Marriott points there, which you can't at other Disney resorts.
* The accounting system is separate which means you can't charge to room at the parks.
* They don't do MagicBands (no free ones, no MB door unlocking, but, you can buy your own or use old ones from other visits).
* They charge for parking at the Swolphin (other Disney resorts don't charge for parking at the resort).
* They have a mandatory resort fee (unless you bought a package deal, like from CostCo, in which the resort fee is waived or included).
* You don't have Magic Express to/from the airport (but you do have free bus and ferry within the Disney bubble).

As a convention resort, the clientele is more adults and less children. Occasionally, the lobby will be full of conventioneers moving to their next event. And it's cheaper than the other resorts on Crescent Lake (the lake between Epcot and Hollywood Studios). Often $200 a night or more cheaper.

It is very much a Deluxe resort. It has high class restaurants and shops. Excellent pools. A spa. Character dining. A gym. Children's activity center. Full room service. Full business class services. People argue over whether it's appropriately themed enough to be a Deluxe. While you're not going to get a bed shaped like a pirate ship, it's as nice as the Contemporary or Yacht, Beach, Boardwalk, or Floridian whose theming is nothing more than fine architecture and art. And the Swolphin has that, though, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And, you can walk to two parks. I love that. And you can walk to any of the fine restaurants/bars of the other resorts on the lake including the BoardWalk.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose the Dolphin over the Swan. Mostly because most of the amenities (completely shared by the two... same owner) are in the Dolphin: gym, laundromat, all-night cafeteria, ice cream shop, grab & go food store (Fuel). The Swan is just slightly more luxe than the Dolphin, but, I'd rather not carry laundry to another building.

The resort fees!!!!!! Geeze! And the only way I'm seeing anything about parking on most of these is by reading the reviews....
I can't say all of the non-WDW resorts that don't charge resort fees, but the Doubletree Suites by Hilton Lake Buena Vista does not charge resort fees. However, they do charge $22/day for parking, though I think there are certain room rates where parking is absorbed into it. Example, I'm seeing a king suite in August for $139/night, or $159 "Park and Stay" so you save $2 a night. Mousesavers.com has a rate of $139 that doesn't include parking but does include a Continental breakfast and an option to upgrade to a full buffet breakfast for $5 adults and $3 kids.
