I'm pretty sure that's always been there. I believe in fact that what you are seeing is the Cast Cafeteria that guests aren't suppose to see.

stupid question im sure, but what was the building originally supposed to be when epcot opened, a resturant?

Odyssey was a restaurant at one point... Not sure when it closed or officially opened...

I'll post before we get a lot of the typical "Why isnt it open?" "Seems like a waste" comments.
I've worked in the past in the Odyssey kitchen (as recently as a couple months ago). The restaurant shut down to guests because management wanted to focus guests quick service needs at the Electric Umbrella. When both were open, the Odyssey took away sales from EU. Also, the facility and kitchen were too small to handle the growing crowds at Epcot.
Since its closing, it has been used by Special Events and other backstage needs. The kitchen was used as a final prep/staging are for special events, Subway kitchen, cast cafeteria kitchen, and the kitchen for outdoor foods (pretzels and turkey legs). Most of the major kitchen equipment needed for a QS restaurant was removed a long time ago and recently (1-2 yrs ago) even more kitchen equipment was removed. Around that same time, special events stopped using the kitchen except as a very last minute staging area. The main part of the kitchen is now strictly used by outdoor foods, Subway, and cast cafeteria.
The Odyssey is in no condition currently to reopen as a QS restaurant. It just doesn't posses the capacity or the equipment to function like it used to.

They appeared the be holding an event of some sort in the building just last week, from what I could see.
Typically it holds a few events each week. Not for paying regular guests of course. And it is still part cast cafe backstage.
It opened October 1982.

Would be the perfect spot for a new character meal, kick the princessess out of Norway for one thing, and move them and or others into a rennovated redesigned Odyssey. I know wont happen, but fun to dream.

Thanks for sharing! I love so much the old Epcot Center! It was even better than the current version! Still, Epcot is my favorite park.
