NYT: "Universal....Takes Aim at Disney"

Going back to the Transformers thought really quick and its comparisons to Spiderman...

Let's consider the idea that Universal could change the storyline/effects for the Orlando version, similar to how the Mummy follows a much different course and plot on the Hollywood and Singapore versions.

Also, I'm starting to wonder something else...Not only is Universal Orlando home to a Spiderman attraction, but so is Universal Studios Japan........Japan, the HOME of Transformers. IF they decide the want a transformers ride, it should also be quite different than Spiderman they have there....so maybe Universal would create a different version for both of those parks?

On top of that, what is the contract status with Marvel and Universal Japan I wonder........o_O

rut row, you done found a can o' worms and opened it. I did some quick Wiki-ing and saw that Marvel productions and comics were involved in the early transformers.o_O

defo can of worms here... i do see transformers coming to universal studios and not islands of adventure! think with the success so far it would be stupid not to! and i think transformers will be around for a long long long long long long long long long long long long time lol :)

So...just making sure I understand...if they were involved in making the original Transformers...does that mean Disney has some sort of rights to them? Not that, hmm, I really don't think Disney would ever try to make Universal give up their Transformers ride. They wouldn't get anything out of it other than Universal losing a ride while getting some extremely bad PR for looking terribly terribly petty (and also wasting time and money considering they'd never put a Transformers ride in the parks...doesn't exactly fit). But it's interesting.

Disney has no rights whatsoever to Transformers.
Haha. You replied so fast...I've been trying to catch up on what I've missed the last day or so as I moved but you replied so fast it messed up my order of going through the threads ;) And that's good to hear. I wasn't exactly sure what was being implied with those other comments. Though like I said, it wouldn't really matter even if they did have the rights since Transformers doesn't fit with any park. Can you imagine Transformers next to Small World?:D

Well, Universal does have a proud horror-film tradition, after all. From Frankenstein to Psycho. A permanent HHN would make complete sense. Hmm...know what would rock? If a haunted house WERE built in Universal Florida, and AAs of Abbott and Costello figured into it somewhere. Their horror-comedies are classics. And they were once very important to Universal Studios. They should be remembered in some way, in my opinion.

I think Marvel/Disney only has some rights to the comics and 1st animated series. I'm really wondering about the foreign rights and spider-man and how that pertains to Marvel in Tokyo.

Eh...I really don't know if it fits with DHS. Can you imagine Transformers next to Toy Story Mania?;):D But yes, if they had to put it somewhere, I suppose that would be the place that would most make sense. But still, I think it would be pretty jarring to see it in the parks.

The only reason it makes sense is because that park doesn't have a true identity, it's a mess.

Too true...sigh. Though even with that, I would hate it if it were there. the ride looks like a blast and I don't even mind the first transformers in that "well this is dumb but I can watch fluff every once in a while way" but I'm sure Disney would not have made the ride universal did..not kid friendly enough. And then I think it would really stick out like a sore thumb even of the park is a mess. Good thing it's a hypothetical, hehe. :)

Transformers isn't any less kid friendly than Star Wars or Indiana Jones. And the ride being based on a movie is really all that's required for it to fit in DHS. Moot point now though.

SS44 now being demolished, sorry no pics.

This same basic idea has worked well for Disney at Epcot the last few years; they've slowly been making little bits of the Food & Wine Festival permanent additions and the results have been good. Hopefully it works for Uni, too.

I would love! if Abbot and Costello were remembered in the parks somehow. So few people know about them today. But my dad discovered this movie rental place that emphasized older movies, like even dating back to the 30s, and they had a huge section on Abbot and Costello. My brothers and I grew up laughing to them :) Hold that Ghost, Meet Frankenstein, Meet the Mummy... all the "horror ones" were some of my favs. That and Jack and the Bean Stalk. :D I know, I know, this post probably made me sound like a total geek but they really were great and thinking about them brings up some really fond memories I have of dad and I spending time together :)

I know some are excited about the prospects of a permanent haunted attraction... but for fans of the seasonal event, there are some serious potential problems, including less original content each year. A good break down here -

Also, for Abbot & Costello fans, they aren't completely forgotten at the Uni parks - there's a big movie poster for them at the front of the Monsters Cafe, I'm pretty sure they're in the Monsters Cafe clip loop at some points, and I believe at least one of their film posters is on the formerly-Amity wall of doom.
