Now I dislike the Tronorail even more

I used to kick butt at that game. It was so much easier than the arcade version.

That's another odd thing. I'm a child of 80's arcades. I loved them. Maybe if I had seen TRON when I was a kid, I'd have different feelings about it. I look at the trailer for the sequel and it makes me think "Wow, the fact that this guy is coming back after spending 30 years in a computer program to communicate with his son is pretty cool." When in fact, he was out of the computer program at the end of the 1st one, and there was never any mention of his son.

As a child of the 80's in the arcades I would have to assume you played Tron? The game was in most every arcade, convenient store or gas station I went into along with Pac-man, Galaga and Centipede. It was a fun came driving ther light cycles.

Even though it was a staple in the arcades, along with the games you mention plus Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Tank Battle and others, that didn't make the movie worth watching.

Not to continue the Twilight talk...but quiet honestly story aside they are simply poorly shot and produced films.

For the ammount of popularity that franchise has you'd think more effort would be put into making the movies. They just seem slapped together. Horribly edited...and CGI that worse than friends of mine produce in their bedrooms! Just badly made movies!

I thought the 1st one was beautifully shot.
The 2nd one had some beautiful shooting in it as well. The CGI wolves sucked, but improved in part 3.
The 3rd one was fantastic in all elements, except for the Victoria replacement.

Nope. I remember seeing it in arcades, but was never drawn to it. In all fairness to the game, I was more of a pinball kind of kid.

As to TRON --

I saw it as a graduate student at NYU when it first opened in 82....it was a horrible movie, but I don't think there is anyone that went to see it that wasn't impressed by the art design...it was absolute state of the art in 1982.

That, of course, was very quickly outdated within only a few years, and watching the movie now just exposes how horrible it really is, and how terrible tv "stars" of the early 80's were (i.e. Bruce Boxleitner)...but back then, he was totally "hot" as far as popularity went. Most people don't even know who he is now.

As to the sequel, though -- I don't think you can underestimate how far CGI has come, and what a well-crafted film can look like. Just watching the previews you can see that it looks and feels completely different, and action movies today are very different from action movies back in the early 80's.

I don't think you can equate the two, except by virtue of the same franchise name.

Agreed.

I watched TRON when I was little, and didn't understand a damn word. Then I was in high school, and we met again. I liked it better, because I sort of got what was going on, once I got through all the computer lingo. Then Kingdom Hearts II rammed it down my throat and had many a child saying "what the heck is this? Who is TRON?"

Then they started making a sequel, and I thought...why? What's the point? Is it to show us how much better computers are now? 'Cause we know that.

I'm going to see it, partly because my BF is crazy about it, but also because I admit that I am curious. Maybe there is something to be found here...maybe not. While I remain skeptical, I will wait to pass judgment until I have seen the film. Then I can accurately hate it or love it.

Yeah, I think the movie is ok but would not sit down and watch it again. I have high hopes that TR2N will be a much better movie and I do look forward to seeing it at least once.

I was about 12-13 when TRON came out, me and my friends absolutely loved the movie. We would spend our days trying to recreate the light cycles on our bikes and hit each other with frisbees. For someone of my demographic it was a highlight of our tween years.

I also remember spending countless dollars on the video game. I have avoided seeing it since then because I now it would not live up to my original vision of the film.

For someone living in south Jersey in the early 80's and with limited money( our only home video experience was a homemade Pong console and a friend who had an Atari 2600) it was ground breaking.

Like I said I have made a point not to see it recently although I have stared at the dvd many times, mulling over the purchase. So, I cannot attest to how it would translate to this generation. With the vast superiority of today's technology, most movies from past eras, that relied on visual technologies look dated(including Star Wars).

I loved the arcade game. I spent many a quarter playing it at Mountain Lakes in California.

Twilight was terrible. It's almost 2 hours of sappy, unbelievable teen angst and junk with maybe, maybe 5 minutes of any action. None of the cast can act worth a crap, especially Stewart. I would rather sit down and watch Dragon Wars again than have to sit through another showing of any of the Twilight movies.

I will say that if you watch Tron now, of course it seems crappy when compared to today's standards. Don't most movies that are 20-30 years old?

Robert Pattinson is a good actor. If you read the Twilight books, you'll realize he portrayed that character as well as anyone could.

The point you're making about Tron is in relation to how it looks. Again, I didn't have a problem with that.

It was bad. I remember seeing it as teenager and thinking it was pretty crappy.

Now you have a new task. Go and watch "The Black Hole" and then hope they don't make a remake of that.

Black Hole is rough to watch. I definitely enjoyed Tron thought and I think it's because it's one of those low quality cult-classics.

I think that I might be in the target audience for this film. I know enough about the original to know that a) I liked it when I was a kid and it first hit theaters, b) I have not revisited it since then, and c) I think most of my memories are based on plunking an amazing number of quarters into the machine in the local arcade. I dont remember the plot, I dont remember the story outside of the very, very basics (guy goes into the computer, battles programs, etc). I do remember very vividly throwing "disks" at the MCP and hoping I had another chance to play the light-cycle level on the arcade machine.
I think that, given my place in the IT industry now, if I were to go back and rewatch the original, I'd find much fault with it. As a vauge hazy memory though, I'm psyched to see the new one.
