NOT a cruise person

but my family wants to go. Should we pick the brand new Dream or the smaller Magic? I don't get seasick but I'm very claustrophobic and do not like the feeling of a ship rocking (I get nervous on ferries and whale watch boats).

Excluding very rough seas due to mother nature (I know this can't be helped), I'm told the newer ships have stabilizers to make the ride less rocky. Can you feel the ship bouncing around?

Then new ship is awesome, but you can't go wrong with any of the ships. I'd pick your itinerary first. That will determine the ship.

You can feel the ship move at times, but you get used to it. I do get motion sickness and I take non drowsy Dramamine and am always fine.

I've never felt claustrophia at all on the ships. You can always go outside and breathe the beautiful sea air.:)

Hi there White Queen.

All the DCL, and most other large cruises ships as well, have stabilizers and as noted except during rough weather, keep the vessels running fairly smooth with little or no rolling or pitching.

You have to remember, The Magic and Wonder (the smaller DCL vessels) are 80,000 tons each, which is twice the size of a WWII aircraft carrier.

However since you are Claustrophbic I would get a cabin with a large porthole or a balcony. My wife is very claustrophbic, but with at least the large porthole, she has no problems at all.

What ever you decide...Have a great cruise!:animwink:

One word of caution to people who don't like the idea of cruising - do not google youtube videos.

We're looking at a 4 day to the Bahamas/Castaway Cay for next year. I think this would be enough time for my guys to get a taste of the DCL and not push my paranoia over the top.

I've never cruised before but my sister talked me into doing a 5 day Royal Caribbean cruise to Bermuda this summer. I anticipate really liking cruising but I am very afraid I will spend the entire time motion sick and :hurl:. I figure that a short cruise is the way to start just in case it makes me miserable. I'm now going to have to spend the rest of the evening forcing myself to stay away from YouTube. :lookaroun

Most of the time no..... The last night, when they are headed back to Port Canaveral they go as fast as they can and when the wind hits a 14 story moving ship...well ... My sister and I were in the shops (deck 3), I had to hold on to the displays to keep my balance. After the shops closed and midnight we went up to deck 11, the water was almost sloshing out of the pool, that's when we decided we should just go back to the cabin and call it a night!!!

Sounds like you're an expert cruiser pygy. Would love to hear some more of your advice.

You must have had some rough seas. I just got back yesterday from a 4 day on the Dream. The Aquaduck had an issue on Tuesday, so they gave us a second day at Castaway Cay and high-tailed it back to Canaveral that night. We were doing 22+ knots all night long. You could feel and occasional shift or wiggle, but nothing like what you've described.

Actually, I feel worse today than I did all cruise. It still seems like we're moving...

I love that! When I go out on my DHs bass boat with him and the lake or river has any sort of movement to the water the boat does the "water bounce" a lot since it's not that big (only like 19.5' long). Usually that night when I get in bed I can feel the bounce still which I loooove. I always fall right to sleep! :snore: That's wonderful for me...lifelong battle with insomnia and all...I wonder if I'll sleep our whole cruise away....

Really lucky. We had just returned to the ship when DW and I looked at each other and said "We could really use 2 days here", when the captain came on the intercom and said we'd be going back. So we looked right at each other again, and said "This cruise should be a few days longer." :ROFLOL: Unfortunately, that one didn't work out for us.

Our trip on Royal Carribean was great. You barely, if ever, felt the ship move. They are just too big. I thought I was not a cruise person either. On the third day my wife asked me why I eventually relented and went and I said, "I ran out of excuses not to go." I can't wait for our next one.

I actually priced out Royal Caribbean as well - it looks fun. DH loved the look of that zip line ride in Labadee? I think that's where it was. He'd be going by himself.
