Non Disney Related - Hurricane Katrina - New Orleans, LA

As I'm sitting here posting and replying about all things Disney, I have the news on watching the latest on Hurricane Katrina on MSNBC. I hope the folks who couldn't leave New Orleans, LA come out alright from this. Right now, Hurricane Katrina is packing winds of 160 mph and is moving to the NNW at 10 mph.

Hurricane Katrina was supposed to head directly west across the southern tip of Florida from Fort Lauderdale to Naples. At the time, the winds were only maxed out at 75 mph and Naples was supposed to pick up 10-15" of rain. By Thursday night (8/25/05), I saw Katrina make a Southwestern turn towards Key West. All the rains associated with Katrina were on the south side of the storm and Naples walked away clean from this one. The most I saw was a band of heavy rain that occured Friday night (8/26/05) and a wind gust of 31 mph that afternoon!

Anyways, to the folks in Louisiana.... Good luck! Be Safe! :(

As a side note - I'm hearing on the news that some folks who already evacuated are Disney-bound as they interviewed a family with 5 kids earlier today. ;)

UK news (as of 09:00 our time) stated that Katrina had moved course from a NW to a N and is headed towards New Orleans - it has been graded a cat 4 and folks are evacuating.
I hope everyone stays safe

This is media sensationalism at its best. They are showing everywhere on the news that it isn't going to hit. It's not even close to New Orleans anymore. It is headed towards Slidell, LA and Waveland, MS. No matter what, I'm high and dry in Alabama.

Where I am we are getting medium stength winds, 40-60 mph. Pine trees in my front yard are swaying like little hula dancers on a dashboard. We here are very fortunate this did not come our way, but really feel for the folks to the west of here who are experiencing this monsterous storm. Godspeed, my thoughts are with all of you.

So, just how far do you think Slidell, LA is from NO ? 20 miles? The whole area is getting hit.

Which, I'm sure, is why there are now holes in the Superdome, because holes magically appear in massive buildings when hurricanes are nowhere near them.

Uh, I live in Slidell. We are getting hit by the eye. New Orleans will be on the west of the storm which is always the weaker side of a hurricane.
Summary: Slidell and MS Gulf Coast get pummeled. New Orleans gets a reprieve.

They are making a big deal over a *minor* leak that may or may not have been there already in a building that is over 30 years old. Sure New Orleans is seeing some effects, but it isn't what the media is making it out to be.

New Orleans, braced for a catastrophic direct hit from the powerful Category 4 storm, hunkered nearly 10,000 people in its mammoth Superdome, but Ed Reams of CNN affiliate WDSU reported that the structure has begun leaking as the winds damaged the roof letting daylight and rainwater in the darkened arena.

Wow... didn't know you were there and could give us first hand information on what is REALLY happening. Always good to have someone that can provide REAL information to us so we don't have to rely on the reporters that are inside on cell phones.

[/sarcasm]

The media will do their best to get good ratings, but it's being reported in several places that NO is getting battered pretty hard. Whether things are being stretched some is beside the point. But, you shouldn't assume that you have all the right information.

They will ALWAYS show the biggest city first vs any small town or suburb. More people = more affected = bigger concern. Plus, people can understand "New Orleans." The average American has never heard of Slidell. When it's all done and over with, and they are showing damage reports, don't worry, you'll get to be on the news, too.

I'm getting my information from the Weather Channel, and they are saying that the Superdome damage is *MINOR*. It is still a safe structure. Roofs are being torn off buildings because most of them are old. The storm isn't as bad as it was supposed to be for New Orleans.
Yes, New Orleans is getting battered hard, but there is worse happening elsewhere. Most of the reporters don't even know where they are. They need the local reporters out there and local meterologists in the studio.

A levee just broke, now that is a serious problem! Slidell is getting an average 18inches of rain per hour. Lots of rain and wind damage in the New Orleans area/ MS Gulf Coast.

From CNN.COM:

About 70 percent of New Orleans is below sea level and is protected from the Mississippi River by a series of levees. (Full story)

Forecasters predicted the storm surge could reach 28 feet; the highest levees around New Orleans are 18 feet high.

At 9 a.m. ET, the storm was centered about 40 miles southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, and 65 miles southwest of Biloxi, Mississippi. (Watch video update on Katrina's path)

The reason for the concern over New Orleans isn't a conspiracy by major networks to overshadow your home town. No one is saying New Orleans is taking a direct hit. The media attention is because of the way New Orleans is situated. When you have a major city with millions of inhabitants that basically is sitting in a bowl while there will be strom surges around it that are 10 feet higher than the levee system designed to protect the city, I would think that would be cause for just a wee bit of concern, wouldnt you?

Hey- you made it! Slidell was just on our local news. They showed it on a map, and described it as "an affluent area on the Gulf" They even drew a little arrow.

Can these weather people go inside now? I would feel much better if they weren't standing out there like a bunch of sitting ducks. To quote one poor guy (who was scrunched up against the wind): "It hurts my face to be out here."

Everyone, stay safe. Scary, scary stuff.

Well most of them have gone inside finally. The weather finally beat them. It is totally unecessary for them to be out there.
