Nintendo partnering with Universal to make attractions.

Hmmm, I still basically feel the same. There's some pretty cool effects with the combo of AR and physical (that Toad moment being the stand out) but I don't know...

They're driving at like 20cc (within the AR itself). The physical sets look pretty great for the most part so I must give them credit there.

Honestly until I actually ride it, the middle part of the queue (library) is the highlight for me. There's so many great gags and amazing attention to detail. Its a side of this world we haven't seen yet.

The pre-show is pretty weak to me as it seems like a wasted opportunity to have Team Mario and Team Bowser introduce themselves and start throwing shade at each other. I totally get why the went with the approach they went because its super simple and easy to understand (just like how mainline Mario games explain things). But I dont know, it feels like its missing something.

I kind of wish they just made a Super Mario ride instead of Mario Kart after looking at this. Like maybe we become plumbers with Mario & Luigi and go down into Peach's Castle sewer system to fix a leak and get caught up in massive trouble.

Its going to be a cool shooter ride and the AR is going to look great. But, I'm definitely feeling "Ehh" on the overall "package" that is this ride.

People have filmed Spider-Man under the 3D glasses and it looks nothing like the final product in person
Filming with 3D glasses over the camera lens is not comparable to AR glasses. Completely different technologies. I’ve yet to see any video of Spiderman filmed with 3D glasses over the camera. And there is a reason for that: it doesn’t work and is totally pointless.

The only thing you are missing with the AR video is the stereoscopic effect. Otherwise, it looks like the videographer did a nice job capturing the experience.

I have to agree. Kind of. Rather instead, it would be nice if they also made a main Mario ride. Have it start in Toad Town, with Bowser Kidnapping the Princess. Then go through a Forest to Bowser’s Castle. When you get there, the Castle rises into space, and you take a launch star. You’d go through scenes, passing various planets from the Galaxy games, taking a ride on Starship Mario. You approach a fleet of Airships and Bowser’s floating castle. Entering the Castle, you’re face to face with Giant Bowser. You fly around the gigantic figure, taking him down. You then return to earth, at Peach’s Castle, with the Princess in tow.

Leave the interactivity to Mario Kart and make the Super Mario ride more focused on being an impressive dark ride. I suppose they thought the interactive story in the land, with Bowser Jr, was enough.

Nintendo wanted an all age/height level attraction. They wanted the land accessible to anyone and everyone since it based on a all age property

Who are they making these rides for? 3.5 years olds can ride Big Thunder. I’m sure the 3 and under crowd who won’t understand the gameplay component anyway would have “been ok” with waiting another few inches to ride.

The scenic elements of Mario Kart shows how well just doing a dark ride could have worked.

And it’s incredibly easy to adapt a simple plot, like Bowser kidnapping the Princess, to a 4 minute action dark ride. Mario is all about set pieces. Perhaps they should have done that instead of Yoshi.

Wow, really impressed by the mixture of AR and sets. Also, the two actual 'reviews' of the ride we've gotten so far have emphasized that the AR works well and lines up with its environment, so I'm inclined to think that most of the perceived jankiness in the POV is mostly due to it being filmed through a camera (and only filming one half of a stereoscopic image).

True except we all know now it would be Princess saving Mario. 🙄

While she did do that in Super Princess Peach (underrated game), Nintendo doesn’t really care about the thing you’re referring to. In all but 2 main Mario games, the plot is “Bowser Kidnapped Peach”. It’s a Mario staple. I’m sick of seeing it I’m the games, but it would translate well to a ride.

First video with impressions on the Mario Kart ride that I've seen.

TLDW:
Fun, but "Is the ride the like the best thing in the world? I wouldn't say so."

Also, the AR is "blurry."

The AR is blurry because it’s through the lens of a camera. If I were to record my Switch off cam, it would also look blurry.

Industry wide, when was the last slam dunk? Shanghai POTC? FOP? I haven't been on either but from what I've read and seen those would seem to the the two.

Inversely I haven't been on Rise or Hagrid's, but maybe also those?

FOP is maybe not everyone's cup of tea since it mostly isn't practical, but it's definitely the best at what it is. I think a lot of people would call it a slam dunk, but I'm sure there are some who wouldn't.

Shanghai POTC is pretty hard to not classify as a slam dunk. Not that there isn't minor things to criticize, but if you consider Indy or RSR mostly slam dunks you really wouldn't disagree.

Everyone's opinions seem spot on. Amazing technology but you take a risk not showcasing what people love about the IP. Just like Fast & Furious, if you're going to make a ride based off an racing IP you should probably add some speed. As someone mentioned, maybe this should have been a Super Mario Ride instead and they could have made a more thrilling Mario Kart ride.

But otherwise, it seems like a very fun ride & a ride Universal Parks could really use just like Hagrid, Yoshi & Secret Life of Pets. I'm glad to see actual sets used & not screens everywhere. That haunted mansion & library room were amazing. This seems closer to MIB than TSMM since we're not just sitting in-front of a screen. Great ride, amazing job Universal!

I did a literal 3 second scrub of the non-AR video and I think that's a good enough spoiler level for me. So keep in mind super uniformed opinion.

It is better than my fears, but I totally get the MotionGate comparisons. I think this was just the totally wrong tech for the concept (i.e. Mario Kart). If this was Luigi's Mansion, a lot of the criticism would really go away.

That is what I'll criticize Universal for. They have a lot of trouble matching some lavish tech with the right IP. Gringott's should have leaned into being a coaster. F&F or Mario Kart both needed platforms that had some sense of speed to them.
