What we see now is the full realization of how Free Agency and the current CBC works out.
Everyone works to back-end load these contracts with the intent of minimizing the Cap impact during the most productive years full knowing they will cut the player before these monster numbers become real. The huge variation between rookie contracts and strong vet contracts... makes old players even more exposed because the salary risk on young players is lower than ever. The 53 man roster is a bigger thing to juggle when it comes to developing players than actual dollar risks.
So all these 'big' names get cut with even bigger contract numbers... making them more risky to take, while young players are less risky than ever.
We'll see this cycle for some years to come. "Thanks John, you've been an awesome player for us for the last three years, but we just can't fit this $15mil number we signed up for. So you'll either need to take a paycut or we're going to have to release you".
Look for less trades in the future.. and more signings.
