New Tomorrowland Rock Paint Job

They are Martian rocks. Mars and similar looking planets were a big part of the pulp comics and stories that the Imagineers drew from when reinvisioning Tomorrowland in the 90s.
Right, my understanding is a little different, but I found that out later. My point is that the average fans may not make that connection since a Disney nerd like myself had to be told why they were there.
To be honest I was not a big fan of the 94 refurb, although I was glad it had a cohesive theme. It was just not a theme I cared for.

Truly if MK could get a fantastic updated Tomorrowland. Maybe continue the current theme even just with a cohesive and updated theme, and a better backside plus a new ride. The land really can be pretty to look at like New Fantasyland and Liberty Square, or in other parks Discoveryland, and Mysterious Island, they just need to finally do it properly.

The Tomorrowland update should have happened already, but Disney didn't take care of WDW and now there are so many things that need to be fixed. Tomorrowland seems low on the list of priorities, unfortunately. Hopefully something will be done by the 50th but currently, Tomorrowland does not seem to be on the schedule.

Yup it's long overdue, like I've said many times wdw has been the most deprived resort for twenty years, but now it seems they're definitely realizing it needs work to continue to stay above Universal, and then Universal will fire back with Nintendo. Like it can't get any better now for the public, but it will take a decade for everything to be fully realized.

And, IIRC, the rocks that were the basis of Hollywood visions were the ones up in the Mojave desert, just north of LA. I know I recognized the rock formations in a couple of the movies I saw. Why Mars would be the inspiration for the future is beyond me... o_O

Probably because it's the closest planet and because of the works of guys like H.G. Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs, two very influential figures in science fiction in particular and popular culture in general.

I could see that. It's interesting that there have been two major distinct visions/themes of the future coming out of Hollywood. One is a desolate, arid world with scarce resources, presumably destroyed in a nuclear hollocaust, and another clean, metalic environment where humans learned to live in harmony, and resources were not scarce.

And occasionally you get films like Wall-E, which starts out as the former, but ends very optimistically.

i loved Wall-E for that...ending a doomsday scenario with a hopeful rebirth...It was a great note to end on...
And, you know, in 1994 when the New Tomorrowland was forged, the red rocks with the plantings they chose, combined with all the new Tomorrowland eye candy, just worked... Now years later it feels tired and less dramatic... The new blue rocks look fresh and other-worldly...which is a great start...

I applaud them for trying something different and I get that this was cheaper and not "a step backward" so they went with the rock painting but I just loved the waterfalls and towers. In my opinion it just fit better. Now, if they added these rocks throughout TL here and there it would thematically fit better. It would look like a futuristic base on an alien planet (sort of).

THe towers and waterfall were the correct solution...it was epic and matched the scale of the large hub...it is a shame they were removed in favor of a re-design that was not as timeless as they hoped... They should also turn their eyes to the entrance to Adventurland which always look like an afterthought compared to the Disneyland original portal...Would be nice to have something equally dramatic to mark the entry there as well...

Hub Transitions have always been rocky at best. The improvement the designers did in WDW was add the moat around the whole hub giving wider walking paths and more importantly to the entrance of the Tommorowland give a physical water break allowing room for transition. Since moving the water towers Tomorrowland lost its curtain from the view of the hub. I'm not sure how the new blue rocks as much as I love the color choice will help smooth out that transition.

I was hoping this movie would be a success. That could have helped TL WDW transform to include style elements from this:

But alas, I think I am the only one that loved this movie.

Not true...I felt the amazement and wonder in the last five minutes of that movie that I had not felt since visiting EPCOT in 1996...I thought it was well done but not enough aliens and pablum for today's movie audiences. I watch this every time it is on. It was great to see a new and refreshing story for a change.

I do too and even put it on when there isn't anything on.

I saw it in person this week, and it looked better to me than I'd expected. One impression I had though is that it looked more like a rock with a lot of purple paint than a rock that was purple. Some of the definition/detail seems to have been lost up close.

I don't know that it adds anything, or detracts greatly. I'm neutral on the change.
