New Soarin' Over California filming

As I wait to celebrate the change to Daylight Saving Time in a couple minutes, I noticed on Miceage they've got this note up from the Editors...

"Also, the HD filming for the Anaheim version of Soarin' Over The World is all set for Wednesday morning. The flight plan has WDI's helicopter swooping over the Cadillac Range in Cars Land before banking over Route 66 to the north and flying above the Carthay Circle Theater and Buena Vista Street, then diving over the Esplanade to finish with the exact same flight over Disneyland as the original movie captured during filming back in December, 1999. Don't bother trying to wave to the camera, as Disneyland's security team will prevent anyone from being under the flight plan, and thus in the line of filming, that morning."

Wow, this new version of Soarin' sounds very cool. I imagine this is the new finale' that will swoop over Cars Land and the new DCA before flying over Buena Vista Street and northwards to Disneyland and the same flight the original movie takes. I can't wait to see this new version!

And I wonder who will be there early on Wednesday morning to watch the helicopter zoom over the parks???

Happy Daylight Saving Time!

I wouldn't be surprised if they have parade floats stationary on MSUSA/BVS, with dancers on the parade route and CM's posing as guests in the crowd. I'm sure they have something up their sleeves other than empty parks.

It'd be pretty cool if they started by flying over Paradise Bay with the WoC fountains going before heading to Cadillac Range. I hope they show off WoC, even though MiceAge doesn't mention it.

I think that with just the right tilt of the helicopter and/or camera as it flies over the Cars Land mountain range, you could get a good panorama of the Paradise Pier lagoon and World of Color fountains. With proper camera work you don't neccesarily have to fly right over the lagoon to get the World of Color fountain effect in the shot.

I'd also imagine they wouldn't have the actual show playing with supertall fountains and fire and screen effects going. Just that low-level rainbow colored fountains that they play for a few minutes as the "post-show" exit music plays and the crowds disperse. That would spice up the image and the audience viewing Soarin' at DCA would certainly get the immediate point of reference for what was going on in the Paradise Pier lagoon with that image.

If i am remembering correctly, for the original December 99 fly over filming for Disneyland, all the people shown in the shot were CMs.
Must have been a fun night...doing that!

I am assuming CMs will be rallied once more to provide the *controlled crowd* elements in the scenery to be filmed this week for the update.

Nice.

This is the expected flight path for filming this Wednesday (source: DLThings via Twitter)

Fascinating! Thanks for sharing!

This thought just occurred to me after looking at this flight path, and realizing that Paradise Pier backs right up against Cars Land...

I wonder if they are doing a fake shot sight gag with Cars Land. The flight will begin with a flyover of the 6 acre Ornament Valley portion of Radiator Springs Racers, and that's a stunning landscape from any angle. But they could be enveloped by the Cadillac Range and the film would be like flying over a stunning piece of natural splendor.

But then when they get to the western edge of Ornament Valley, on this flight plan the copter swoops up over the waterfall in the cliffs...

The copter then soars into the sky over those red cliffs and the audience finds itself not flying over the desert southwest, but instead they get a direct shot of Paradise Pier at night and they discover they are flying over a gorgeous Disney theme park! Because this basic view is directly on the backside of Cars Land, especially when you swoop over the cliffs in a helicopter...

The copter path appears to head directly north over the rest of DCA, including the beautiful Carthay Circle Theater and Buena Vista Street, before heading on an exact retread of the original 1999 filming flight path for the original Soarin' movie over Disneyland Park itself.

I'll bet two churros they are going to trick audiences with the first few moments of Cars Land filming before climbing to reveal both parks from above!
