I could care less about this resort by now, however seeing what that boring pool has replaced the area within the two old longhouses in addition to the walking path Disney has again chosen to remove parts that wasn't necessary. You could of kept the luau area as is and just put a pool there that way you maintain the Polynesian theme keep the surrounding vegetation and trees and plants.

You need to spend a bit more time at Riviera. The grounds, rooms and food locations are quite evocative. But I did qualify my post with ‘nice’ for a reason. It is themed, but apparently not enough for many tastes. Had the massing been better pulled off I don’t think there would even be much debate left.

Also you need to broaden your comparisons beyond Marriott, it’s not even accurate. There’s no ambiguity that Poly Island Tower and Riviera can be mistaken for one another. So why accuse them all of being Marriotts.
I really do like the Riviera, but the main reason I stay deluxe/DVC is for the transportation options. Why pay their extravagant price/points for the same transportation as CBR, POP, and AoA? I'd much rather do Boardwalk or Beach.

interior: A-
  • I like the textures, although with a lot of modern furniture and finishings the sheer amount of faux/veneer finishes creates a glossy-matte (i know that's a oxymoron) and flat appearance that im not fond of. I'm sure it's durable and cheaper but please use some real deal materials for a few of the finishes
  • i like the pops of vibrant/saturated colors in places. Overall i'd say the mood is calming, but energetic. Not sure if much has change after the initial sad-beige tour of the room, but they look better when seen with the other elements of the interior. I hope that design trend continues. we need more color in life (look pictures of parking lots from the 70s vs today, notice the lack of colors now)
  • it's a very nice new hotel, i wouldn't say it's particularly "themed" in the disney escapism sense but it is nice
exterior: D
  • I dislike the orange/brown tones they chose. I would be able to over look some of the architecture if the colors weren't so flat
  • the shape of the hotel is too boxy and harsh. I asked a hypothetic many pages back what would some users do to improve the look and someone posted a mock up of some curved architectural elements that made it look much better. there needs to be some softness to the exterior. If they had kept the some of the plant walls and add a lot more foliage that would help. it needs some unique architectural element beside the interior cube gardens.
  • the pool is like a prison yard

. The Polynesian should be the tiki aesthetic taken to an extreme
I understand not everyone wants something simple and modern, but I can promise you not a lot of people want what you’re suggesting here either. “Tiki aesthetic taken to an extreme” is way too kitsch for the amount of money people will be spending on this. I’m not saying it couldn’t use more personality, but I am saying that a lot of what people on these forums are wanting for this things would a little bit too over the top if they actually did that. Not to mention the potential to veer into being offensive if you go overboard on the tiki aesthetic.

Maybe they just figured that if Guests wanted a more classic tiki vibe they’d stay at the original resort, while those that wanted a more “modern Hawaii” vibe would choose the more modern resort…at least they’d have a choice…?
That being said, I haven’t heard that the over-the-top tiki theming of places like Trader Sam’s offends anyone…or, for that matter, the Enchanted Tiki Room at MK…?
They’ve got a Mexican bird, an Irish bird, a French bird and a German bird.
Seems pretty equal opportunity. 😉

Disney is over-the-top. It’s space wizards and talking animals and superheroes. It’s pink castles and Worlds Fairs and cheesy reproductions of national landmarks. It’s the mammoth lobby of the Floridian or the giant Mardi Gras masks of Port Orleans. Sophisticates, especially Europeans, have always scoffed at Disney resorts as the embodiment of America’s lack of taste and “real” history. THAT’S the Disney that hooked most posters here when they were young, the Disney that became one of the major forces in world culture, the Disney that has been exported around the world (look at the Disney hotels in Japan).

If you’re trying to force Disney into fleeting contemporary notions of elegance, of cocktail-party respectability, you’re missing the whole point - and modern Disney management sure is.
