I dunno. The great Imagineering purge of 2019/2020 really got rid of so much of the institutional memory of how to design things based on story and theme, rather than based on IP.
Designing something based on an IP is still designing with a story and theme. Imagineering can design without an IP, they just aren’t allowed to

In my experience hotel room views and subtle decorative patterns aren’t things most kids care about. That’s “Disney lifestyler” stuff.
true, but in most cases the "kids" are just thrilled to be in the bubble and could care less what the resort offers as long as it has food, pool and easy transportation to the parks.
Absolutely NOBODY has equated “theming” to “Mickey and co.” The overuse of IP characters is an element of the new wave of “decorated” resorts, which mixes understated decorative elements with ham-handed, explicit references to marketable characters. That’s part of being “decorated” rather then “themed.”

Which pre-AoA resorts were less heavily themed? Only the Disney Golf Resort and Disney Institute spring to mind, and those resorts underperformed to the extent Disney repurposed both properties repeatedly. And frankly, the Inn/ Golf Resort was more attractive then the more recent hotels.
I don't know I would say under themed, but more subtly themed? My first trip ever to WDW was for my honeymoon and it was at Carribean beach. To me this falls in that category. Just me though, everyone has differing opinions. I will be honest, I really can't stand Grand Floridian. The price is excessive for no real benefit over any other resort there. I find it just as easy to get to MK from Wilderness lodge as those on the monorail. We did just stay at the Contemporary for the first time a year ago, and truly enjoyed it, but we still prefer Wilderness lodge over the others.

Slightly unrelated but what work will the Polynesian go under through 2026? Seems like a lengthy refurbishment. They did the hard refresh on rooms a few years ago. Perhaps an exterior refurbishment?

GF is the last stop before the par... So it is literally a couple minutes away... Wilderness lodge you are dealing with busses (no thanks) or the boats which take a bit more time. I like the Wilderness Lodge... and I have enjoyed staying there, but it does feel a little cut off...being out of the loop. It is a shame that when it was built they did not find a way to link it into the monorail system
