I’ve always said if you go Disneyland and don’t ride either HM or POTC you didn’t go to Disneyland. One or the other is acceptable.

Well, I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that it won't be available on 5/27. But what I do find surprising is the reopening date, 7/1, which is hardly what I would call "early Summer" in Disney park parlance.

It's also quite a long time to be shut down without changing at least one scene. Do you suppose Disney forever ending Johnny Depp's role as Captain Jack Sparrow may have something to do with it?

I mean I know it's been said already but I truly hope they are getting bricks laid again or literally anything remotely visually appealing, this doesn't look like part of New Orleans at all it is so uninspired and boring. Sure people can say it's just a floor but it has absolutely no detail, and the light on the random brick cube is so awkward. I understand wanting to improve crowd flow but could they not have added even the tiniest details to make the area look good and like it belongs in NOS instead of a flat cement walkway? Hoping to see more updates with improved details / decoration to add eye candy and make it fit back in with the area better.

Take this with a grain of salt, but someone on Reddit said they talked to a long time CM that works in NOS and the CM keeps having to tell people that the removal of Jack Sparrow is nothing more than rumor and is not happening, which makes sense. Removing Jack would mean renouncing all the Pirates movies and vaulting them under lock and key like they did with SotS. Plus, after the public viewings of his trial, public opinion of him seems to have shifted in his favor. The Pirates movies are too successful and iconic to the Disney brand and I don't see them trying to remove them from current rides/shows/streaming services, etc.

That same CM also said that the work being done on the inside of the ride is all behind the scenes mechanical and lighting refurbs. No scene changes.

Do we have any reason to believe there will be substantial queue improvements? Or is it just "replace the dead trees and call it a day"?

Yeah the area has definitely lost some character. In person it’s not as bad as you aren’t fixated on one piece of the ground at any given time but those free standing light posts are super awkward. In regards to the brick pavers, I could be wrong but I believe the only places they were located were in front of Cafe Orleans and French Market as a corridor if you will between the planters/ staircases and the buildings. The brick pavers as they existed before don’t make sense now as the area is wide open. Granted their are other alternatives and it didn’t have to just be cement and free standing light posts. I will say I’m very glad to see that the bottom two tiers of those NOS walkways have been more or less left alone. If this stays true then I think its a lot better than what I feared.

I don't know about the public opinion being good ever again on Johnny Depp. Sure people won't see him as a domestic abuser, but they will see him as an alcoholic and cocaine addict now that it's all out in the open.

Regardless of Johnny as a person, his character takes up way too much of the ride. One cameo would be fine, but he's there probably 5 times and they change the dialogue to constantly be about him.

I’m just glad he didn’t make into the theme song.

I brought up the concept of removing Sparrow in the context of Depp being fired from Disney. I remember when, 30(!) years ago, Paul Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure. In retaliation, they've done all they could to try and renounce Reubens' famous alter ego, Pee-wee Herman. They canceled his show "Pee-wee's Playhouse" (which I loved and still love to this day), although they were going to end the show anyway by that point because Reubens was ready to move on, though they did end any and all remaining reruns. They pulled his merchandise from the shelves, though fortunately the then-ubiquitous Blockbuster Video and other video rental stores did continue to have videotapes of his show available for rental. And for good measure, Reubens as Pee-wee did the infamous "This is crack" PSA after the fact. Now, of course, Pee-wee is back in the spotlight again, and now even has his own Facebook account, but that's neither here nor there.

My point is that if Disney is as through with Captain Jack Sparrow as they say they are given what's going on now, then why wouldn't they want to try to do him what they successfully did to Pee-wee Herman for a time? And from what little I know about the trial, there are times when it seems that Amber Heard has the upper hand.

Also (back on topic), what about the notion of "early summer"? In Disney park parlance, I would think that the summer season begins around Memorial Day, but June 30/July 1 is hardly what I would consider "early summer" for a Disney park. Maybe from a literal calendar perspective, but not a Disney park.

Its too hard to remove the how tied Jack is with the franchise now. So while there might be no new Pirates movies that use the Jack Sparrow character you can bet that Disney will still try to milk Jack for as much and as long as they can. As I mentioned previously he is still seen in the World of Color Pirates scene. You'd think if they were really getting rid of any reference to Jack it would have been also removed from World of Color during its long referb.

As for "early summer" and when it falls on the actual calendar, honestly does it matter. They appear to have provided a concrete reopening date rather than the vague "early summer", so that should be a good thing. And for what its worth to me anything between Memorial Day and July 4th is considered early summer. So if its reopening before July 4th, that is still "early summer" to me.

Part of me was hoping that with the controversies (warranted or not) they would move to remove PotC from F! and WoC; I vastly prefer Peter Pan and the former Villains segment.

Are the concrete floors actually the finished product? Or is it a quick fix to get the area ready for Fantasmic then once Fantasmic is dark again they’ll redo the floor work?

I can only imagine what the whole Depp situation has been doing for Disney's PR department. They fire him cause of Heard... then the trial happens and just about everyone is on Team Depp.

I'd love for them to pull the Sparrow figures from the ride, but I have to wonder if they did it now how that would look since Depp is enjoying being popular again.

Something just feels off about Disneyland when Pirates is closed. I’ve always said if you go Disneyland and don’t ride either HM or POTC you didn’t go to Disneyland. One or the other is acceptable.

I went once the day Splash was supposed to reopen from refurbishment.

It's reopen was delayed and it reopened a day late.

I found that out at rope drop since that was the first ride we were gonna do.

The whole day felt off after that. I won't go on days when Splash is being refurbed now.

Depps reputation is sadly gone regardless. Now he's a known alcoholic and drug addict, hardly the type of person Disney likes to associate with.
