New Orleans Square is getting Flattened

You see them for like five seconds.

That's probably the problematic (or "problematic," depending on which person is reading this post at any given moment) content you spend the LEAST amount of time with in the park.
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought they were also one of the most historically controversial things in the Disney canon even prior to the 2010's.

In the film, certainly, but I've never heard any real concern about them in the ride.

Though I suppose that they're certainly one of the easier things to swap out of anything that might be left.

I wish they would have consulted Black people instead of Progressive White people before deciding to replace Splash Mountain. Probably would have stuck around.
I agree. Something tells me they would have decided to take Splash away anyway, though. They have no concern for SotS. Peter Pan benefits from being available to the public and being a generally well-loved and well-received film.

Splash was likely doomed from the start. Sad.

I dunno I think things can change. You re already starting to see an anti cancel culture shift in this country. When things get too extreme, human nature tends try to bring it back to the middle. What I don’t buy is that Disney has no choice but to move forward just because of the announcement. If they were to get some prominent Black voices saying they don’t want Splash erased for x and y reasons I really don’t think there would be much of a backlash at all. Time changes things and we’re not in the same state of extremely high racial tension as we were in June 2020. Of course it would be smart on their part to make that announcement simultaneously with the announcement of a brand new PatF attraction going elsewhere. “After working on this project with our imagineers we have come to the conclusion that PatF is too rich and great of a story to be shoehorned into an existing attraction. Tiana deserves her very own brand new attraction.”

A part of me says why would they do this when they just want Sots to go away? But maybe it’s not a bad out when you have to spend a few hundred million to redo one of the most popular Disney attractions of all time that lets be honest - nobody really has a problem with. They could have got around this whole thing with a disclaimer pre announcement.

And let’s be honest, Tiana has no business being a thrill ride. Granted you can make it work creatively by focusing on the right aspects of the story but have you seen the other rides based around princesses? Snow White, Frozen, BatB, Little Mermaid. They did their very best to take all the thrill or scary moments out of those rides. Kids aren’t even really brave enough to enjoy Splash Mountain until they are at least 7 or 8. In my case 12, but that’s neither here nor there. Do the girls who just got done up at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique really want to stick their feet in the puddles on bottom of the log and get drenched on the ride?

I think it’s wishful thinking right now. I do believe that things can change in the future, of course. As of right now, Disney seems to have to intention on changing their minds towards SotS and now Splash. I was hoping they’d put it on Disney+ when it debuted, but they made it very clear that that wasn’t happening.

They’ve slowly made announcements for the PatF ride… I can’t see them cancelling the project, but I guess we’ll see.

Yeah it’s probably wishful thinking. I just think there’s a pretty easy way out, if they wanted it and if they wanted to save half a billion.

Of course the worst case and most likely scenario is they do it and do it cheap.

Native people have literally been talking about this for years..it's that no one cares. It's not popular to hashtag because they can't virtue signal about something they enjoy.

This is why it’s best to not have high expectations for the project. I know I don’t. I’ve accepted that Splash is going, but I I’m pretty confident that I’m not going to like what’s coming. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong, but I doubt it.

I’ve heard that Disney actually is considering removing the Natives from Pan and has consulted a few tribes to get their opinions.

And yet... what tribe? The American Indians on the Peter Pan ride seem to be a 1950's slapdash TV Western stereotype, barely based on anything real.

I honestly think it's not their representation that is the most offensive, it's that circa 1955 "Ugh!" sound they make as your boat flies past them that's eye rollingly bad.

But since no actual tribal nation seems to be represented, what "tribe" does an earnest young white lady from the Equity Department in Burbank contact? 🤣

It would be like someone in 2022 trying to contact this "tribe" to make sure their costume was accurate...

I said tribeS, as in more than one tribe.

Okay, so there's more than one. Even better. Which ones?

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the earnest young white lady from Burbank's Equity Department contacts any American tribal nation and asks "So, what do you folks think about this? And do you still say 'Ugh'?"

This is a street view image of the area before these changes. I believe this is the correct location, right in front of the French Market, but please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. The raised platform that was removed did have brick pavers, but the lower level has always just had plain concrete. Now that it's all one level, it would probably look weird if they kept the pavers just where the platform was removed, and it was surrounded by plain concrete.

Also note the freestanding light post next to the trash can In the background. It may look a little less out of place, since the stair wall sort of wraps around it, but it was never directly integrated into the stairs or planters, and has always just been sticking out of the concrete.

I don’t know which ones because I wasn’t there when this apparent meeting took place.

Which league of pirates should be consulted regarding the accuracy of Capt. Hook and his crew?

I think consulting with American Indians (which, I was surprised to learn, is the preferred term for many of them) is good for asking "Does this offend you?" and if the research shows the answer to be yes, then ok, remove it.

But we pull on a thread to crazy town if the solution is "Let's make them more accurate." These are FANTASY Indians, they are supposed to be what nineteenth century little English boys THOUGHT Indians were.
