New Orleans looking to be a Disney Cruise port

MiL and I were talking about the plantations out on River Road last week. I've not been in many years. Used to be something we loved doing together. We're both itching to go to Oak Alley for the arts & crafts festival again. That was one of our favorite annual events once upon a time. ;)

First off this would be awesome for the city. Also as many of you have pointed out, they have MANY things for families in NOLA. From what I was told this would be for the new cruise terminal location Poland Ave which NOLA is hoping for it to be open late 2014 and needs someone for it. Now Poland Ave terminal would be a good ways from the French Quarter and airport which would mean alot of taxis and shuttle buses. Not a problem, just saying. So what I would LOVE to happen is they send Royal Car and Norwegian cruiselines to Poland Ave and put DCL at Julia St terminal which is located right at the Riverwalk that those other 2 cruiselines are at. So I guess I'll just wish this comes true cause a 40 minute drive to get on a Disney cruise would be MAGICAL!! This would make me a little bit happier to be living in Louisiana.

They could always extend the river front streetcar.

If this were to come to fruition here, I could see them maybe do a PATF weekend cruise similar to what they did on the Wonder for the Pixar gang. I'd like that. I think for the most part majority wants a DCL ship/vessel to be "going down the bayou straight down to the southland city way down on a river". So yes DCL, specifically Karl Holtz, please put one of your ships in N.O. and make this city one of your ports please.

Can't wait to have my kids walk down Bourbon Street. I hear its like Main Street USA. Family friendly destination?? Since when??

Being originally from New Orleans, I can say that my kids have never been to Bourbon Street. We have taken them to Decatur Street, all over the French Quarter, and many other places in NOLA DURING THE DAY!!!!!

I hope you realize that NOLA has plenty of fun things for family and kids to do.

So true. I spent many a day pushing a stroller in the Quarter. Did I make it a point to go down Bourbon? Uh, no. There's plenty to see & do that's more in keeping with the little-uns within a few blocks. Many good memories. First took Chandler when he was 3 weeks old. I carried him because he was so small (or so I thought...the kid was 8-15 at birth!)). It was before lunch on a weekday in March. The vendors in the market were oohing & aahing over my little bundle. I remember one fella who was there selling pottery that his wife made. He was so taken with Chandler. He made me choose an angel ornament for baby and gave it to me. That ornament hung on the wall in Chandler's bedroom until he was too much of a big boy for it to be cool. Now it's wrapped carefully, stored in his tub full of childhood keepsakes. Someday that angel can hang on his tree so she will continue to watch over his family...all because of a kind gentleman who was selling his wife's pottery and thought my new baby needed an angel. :) If you never go to New Orleans you will never have these amazing moments. The people there are awesome. I miss it so much!

NO has this smell...I can't describe it, but I've been there numerous times, not just in the French Quarter, and I can't seem to get over it...from what I've heard I'm not the only person that has noticed it...however, there isn't much garbage anywhere cause I know they clean like 24/7...I personally would avoid a cruise that stopped here for just that reason...

You've been in the hot months, huh? Yep, it's pretty stinky in the hot months. Less hot/cooler months aren't bad at all. Much more comfortable all the way around. Or at least that was the case for us when we lived there from early 1996 - late 2005.

We usually only travel in the summer as neither of us mind the humidity in the south...so yeah, we've mostly been there May - July when it's hot...in some places it was awfully nauseating...I mean we live near the swamps in North Jersey which smells bad to drive through on the interstate cause of all the methane, but this was something else...

I really hope this happens! We already host 2 other cruise lines, I think adding DCL would be a great trifecta!

As others have mentioned New Orleans has a ton of activities for families to do. Sure it's known for its adult areas but we do have so much more to offer then Bourbon St.

True that! In all the years we lived in the greater NO area I think we went to Bourbon Street twice with guests from out of town.

In my younger days we went to bourbon often. Just last year my husband and I went to a wedding and our hotel just so happened to be on the corner of bourbon and canal. And nope we never stepped foot on bourbon street. Harrahs casino, great food places anywhere, the WWII museum, audobon park and aquarium. I could so go on. Just riding the ferry is fun for the little one.

As someone who's cruised quite a bit - my advice to NOLA is "don't do it." Sure, it's good for business when you have 3,000+ people wandering the streets on a weekly basis (per ship) but it gets old fast.

You kind of lost me on this one. We already host 2 other cruise lines so we're pretty use to that, not to mention tourism is Nola's biggest industry so we are very use to out of towners walking our streets downtown, no problems there.

Hmm, didn't realize NOLA already ran a cruise ship port. The many Caribbean islands rely on tourism too. I guess I'm looking at it from a visitor's point of view (specifically as a cruise ship passenger). Especially with multiple ports that day... Things get crowded and ridiculous. I would imagine the locals just see $$$.

Yep, we've had a few ships here for quit awhile now. The way our port is set up, its not bad for the passengers. Pretty straight forward process. We are currently building another port here though and that's where they want the Disney ship at. If that happens it would be by itself as far as I know.

Again NOLA would LOVE for DCL to come. NOLA already supports "3" cruiselines (Carnival Conquest and Elation, Royal Carib Navigator of the Seas and Norwegian Star) and after the Poland Ave terminal is done hopefully a 4th! Seriously though there is plenty to do in NOLA. As far as the smell someone said earlier, would be from Bourbon St, but that is a thing of the past because of the cleaning crew that comes in every night. They WASH and yes I mean with soap. It is impressive as I have seen them in action when we go there for weekend getaways.

Besides smell and river pilots, count me as not a fan of DCL in NOLA. I have been there, it was in summer months. However, 1 ship out of 4 in NOLA would be okay, we'll cruise elsewhere, more cabins for you.

New Orleans is a hospitality city. Visit us between November and April. The weather is nice during this period. NOLA and Orlando have the same heat problems. It is oppressive. That's why I vacation during the cooler months. New Orleans would make a great port city. MaryJaneP, what smells? When was your last visit to NOLA? Try it again because since hurricane Katrina; our city is a favorite of many. We would love to have you visit.
