New Orleans looking to be a Disney Cruise port

Interesting news out of New Orleans. Seems the port authority is lobbying Disney to put a boat in their port at the new cruise terminal to be completed in 2015.

Besides the long transit on the Mississippi River and the cost of having a River Pilot, New Orleans has to overcome its "party" image to highlight all of the great family recreation the area offers not just in the city but throughout the region.

If they don't come back to Galveston, NO is still closer than Miami or P.C. for us. :) I hate the thought of dealing with airports to get to a port.

We are soooo itching to sail from NO because you have to navigate the river now. Plus, NO is special to us. ;) Not sure it's the right image Disney would want to associate with. The logistics with airport transport might be a bit easier, though, than Galveston was. I'd make it a point to sail from there. Be a great chance to go visit our dearest friends over there. Love to spend some time...

The river pilots would probably kill the deal. Also doesn't make sense as NOLA is only a 10 hour drive from Canaveral. It would be great for south LA folks though.

It would be good for more than just people in Louisiana. A mid-continent port would be excellent. Houston, Galveston, New Orleans are all fine with me. However, New Orleans at 8 hours is about as far as I am willing to drive for a cruise. The terminal at Houston is a little over 4 hours and Galveston is about 6 hours for us. Flying doesn't bother me, but dealing with all the nonsense at the airports does, especially with kids. A Disney cruise out of Port Canaveral or Miami is just not in the cards for us.

I always wanted to try and cruise for N.O. I feel as if flights from NY would be cheaper over a holiday to there then lets say Orlando or Miami. I just don’t see it happening though.

This would be awesome! Im from New Orleans and my whole family still lives there. So I wouldnt have to worry about renting a hotel room. Yay me. There is so much for familys to do in NO. I bring my family(wife26, daughter4, son2) all the time. We always have a blast.
Just off the top of my head the places to go for families are:
Audubon Zoo
Aquarium of the Americas and Imax theater
Audubon Insectarium and Butterfly Garden
City Park(which includes: Storybook land, Train gardens, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, New Orleans Museum of Art, and a lot more)
National World War II Museum
French Quarter tours and such
Port of Call Restaurant ( look it up)
Harrah's for those who like to gamble
Louisiana Children's Museum( Had A LOT of fun here when I was a kid, my granny brought my brothers and I here all the time)

I have personaly done all of these and had a great time at all of them. Except at Harrah's. I suck at gambling.

Having a Disney boat for the new terminal opening in 2015 would be quite a catch for New Orleans so they might be willing to give Disney a very favorable deal for a short-term berth.

Besides the immediate City, the surrounding area offers some great sightseeing and excursions for the entire family. The chance to take in the unique culture of South Louisiana could be a tipping-point for a family to take the plunge on a Disney cruise experience.
After traveling the river in small boats most of my life it was kinda fun being able to see over the levee but the novelty wears off quite quickly unless you're interested in seeing other ships and tows plying the river.

It's quite possible that I could be enticed to book a Disney cruise out of New Orleans since I live about an hour away on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

OOOHHHHHH!!!!! Super excited about this. We would cruise Disney all the time if that happens. Its the 12 hour plus drive to PC that kills the deal (plus when we go that way we have to go to the parks). Being less than an hour away is awesome. I am sure @jesemeca is excited about this two.

Can't wait to have my kids walk down Bourbon Street. I hear its like Main Street USA. Family friendly destination?? Since when??

I'm hoping my sarcasm detector is faulty this morning since I'm sure you would have to "go" to Bourbon Street on purpose. But if not...

Bourbon Street is just a small part of the French Quarter which is only a small part of the City of New Orleans which is a tiny fraction of the Greater New Orleans area within South Louisiana.

Honestly, Bourbon Street is quite boring during the day when there isn't an event like Mardi Gras or a bowl game in town. Truly, the freaks come out at night.

Yup, there's a lot more to do in the Quarter than just Bourbon Street.

  • Jackson Square
  • The French Market
  • The riverwalk
  • The Jax Brewey (shopping center)
  • The Insectarium
  • The Aquarium
  • Imax Theater
  • Ride a streetcar along the river
  • Take the Canal St. streetcar to City Park and:
    - ride a paddle boat throughout the park
    - go to the NOMA (Museum of Art)
    - go to Storyland for the kids
    - go to the Botanical Gardens. The Train Gardens is open on the weekends
    - on the weekends go to the little amusement park and ride the train, ferris wheel, carousel and other carnival rides
  • Ride the Natchez Paddlewheel Riverboat on the River
  • Go to Children's Museum
  • Go to the National WWII Museum
  • Take a tour Mardi Gras World
  • Take one of the hundred walking/bus/cemetary tours available
  • There's also the Zoo with Audubon Park and Riverview Park (by cab ride)
  • or maybe go visit an old plantation
  • And then there's the food.....
These are just a few off the top of my head. But's there's plenty here for families and kids.
