New NextGen RFID main entrance turnstiles to go live this week

It's interesting that they didn't go exclusive RFID here yet... maybe phased?

I mean it should be a pretty good assumption that nearly all guests using this entrance should be hotel guests right? Why not go 100% rfid here? Maybe just phasing the construction?

There are still a lot of non-rfid tickets out there. I also don't think any of the cast IDs allow RFID entrance yet, so I'm thinking they are going to have to keep these going until at least the end of the year.

It's still possible for guests at the 5 Epcot Resorts to have purchased their tickets well before the conversion to RFID, which is recent. I suspect a lot of old tickets are floating about, even for those staying onsite.

IMHO, Disney should track the number of admissions through the old gates and once it reaches below a certain threshold, convert the remaining gates to RFID. Remaining guests would then have to visit Guest Relations to convert their tickets.
I'm sure that is what is going on. Although currently, from observation, it looks like about 50-50 using the RFID to non RFID turnstiles, so there is a way to go yet.

Sure - but converting tickets is a one time exercise.. something that could be emphasized right at hotel checkin. And they can still process 'classic' ticket holders.. they just have to go through the handheld terminals.

I think the biggest issue is I don't think there is any guest relations/ticket windows on that side of the property for epcot hotel guests. So where would they convert tickets?

I expect this conversion rate to start ramping up very quickly... Disney will start pushing people to convert their tickets.

But they have handhelds for the non-RFID ticket holders.. cast.. well they wouldn't be relying on this entrance would they?

Just suprised to see them not take on both sides aggressively here..

Looking at the entrances they are still seeing a roughly 50-50 split. You would be hard pushed processing all of those through a handheld. No doubt it will come to it, but I think they are a while off yet.

There is a ticket window/booth right before the International Gateway entrance. I know this because not only have I walked by it a million times, but I've bought tickets there. :)

See DLR entrance currently? :) All the handheld transactions there due to multiday tickets.

I've also heard of them using the handhelds at WDW to relieve congestion at the entrance.

I have not been to DL in a few years, not sure what they are doing on their turnstiles.

At WDW, the congestion relief with handhelds is to basically create more turnstile points when all the regular once are in use. I

While they still have the standard turnstiles in use... they have pushed two initiatives...

Photos for all AP holders.. (evolving in how they've done it)
Fighting transfers of multi-day tickets

For the APs, they first used to do via a processing center, and then by photopass people. But now I think they can even do it via the handheld while in line.. so your photo shows up when you hit the turnstile.

The second, they used to make people sign the tickets and check IDs, but the ticket people were erasing the names used so they could be resold again... so Disney went to photos for ALL multiday ticket holders. That is a huge undertaking.. and DLR has addressed it by having CMs work the lines with handhelds finding those with multidays and who haven't been captured yet.. and processing them right there in line.

The initiative to photo all multiday passholders is huge.. and they tackled it quite effectively. The one thing going for them tho is.. really only 2 main gate points (plus DTD.. )

With the current turnstiles Disney knows that only people with Valid tickets are entering the park. 1 spin of the turnstile per ticket read. With this wide open free for all how does Disney control the flow of the guest getting in? How do they prevent people with expired tickets from calmly walking right past the scanners and walking into the park. Also with large groups It has to be hard to keep track of what kid scanned what ticket and who gets to take the walk into the park. It just seems like a big mess.

Why not just put the RFID readers at all the current turnstiles in place of the insert card reader? Make everyone spin the turnstile.

I like things to feel and be in order. The RFID entrances seems like a confusing mess of people.

Can someone explain to me how this will not be a problem? This has been my only brain scratcher about all of this RFID stuff. The poorly designed entrances.

Oddly enough, it does not seem to be an issue. Granted my experience with them is less than a CM would see in an average day, but I have been to the parks about 1/2 a dozen times since the RFID turnstile-less gates came on line and I have yet to see anything more that than a semi organized line of people scanning and going through.

What I have not seen is people getting their bags stuck on the turnstile, people trying to shove a jogging stroller through one, etc and that has drastically sped things up.

Sure, a group of people could rush the opening, but they could do the same thing with a turnstile by simply hopping over it.
