New Muppet Movie sounds like a remake of The Country Bears.

Yeah, the story sounds like NBC christmas special a couple years ago. But I think this could be great. Stoller and Segel want to go back to the old school muppet films. So I have faith in them.

The muppets were at the best when they made Muppet Treasure Island and A Muppet Christmas Carol... they both had great traditional stories and amazing music and of course the muppets!!!

I love A Muppet Christmas Carol!!

If they gave a prize for being mean, the winner would be him!"

So is this more or less another attempt to gauge the muppets' popularity or possibly respark them for a new generation in relation to building themepark attractions based on them? Although this might be successful, aren't they just as likley to respark new interest with an incredible ride where as they could decrease interest with a substandard movie? Not to say the new one would be destined for disaster, but there have been atleast one or two poor attempts IMO.

As Roger Ebert says, it's not what a movie is about, it's *how* it's about. You know how they say there are only about 12 different story plots which are recycled over and over again?

I don't know why people are bashing this already. Segel has already proved he is a gifted writer, and an incredibly funny person to boot. I have faith, especially since he is so passionate about this.

This reminded me...I did a quick forum search and didn't see anything...has anyone seen the muppet youtube videos?

My favorite is the Sam the Eagle one "and keep the world safe from weirdos..."

Yes I've seen those videos and I like them alot. I think it shows disney's commitment to bringing the muppets back.

I don't really mind the "save the theatre" theme. At least the Muppets are sticking to something they know, I feel like there were a million episodes where they had to save the theatre.

Well, i'd personally rather see it as a Muppet movie than a Country Bears movie. But then, Country Bears was one of those things I could never get into.

In the past, the Muppets were actually aimed at adults, but also loved by kids at the same time. That was back when a "family movie" didn't mean a movie for kids that adults are forced to sit through. The more recent Muppet films have been written like a kids' concept that adults will nostalgically tolerate. In other words, they've done it the opposite recently. Even back in the 70s, the Muppet Show writers went for older, almost vaudeville style jokes, and it worked.

My guess is executives decided that they couldn't market puppets to anyone but kids anymore, and that all the hip, "ironic" young adults these days would scoff at the Muppets. But right now, we've gotten to the point that folks the age of this Segal (and me, too) are really into the shows and movies they loved as kids. We're a childish and nostalgic bunch, despite the attempt to paint us as a generation of cynics and "cool kids". :)

Oh, and the comment about the old ones being movies that just happened to include Muppets is about right. Take another look at The Great Muppet Caper. The actors are playing it completely straight. Charles Grodin's character is very seriously in love with a pig puppet! No one plays it like, "Hey kids, look! I'm in a movie with those lovable muppets!"

See? I'm far too into the Muppets. And I'm hoping that Segal must be, too. I mean, while else would anyone making his mark in edgy adult comedies take a detour to make a Muppet movie?
