Everyone's thinking it, I'm just sayin it.... Any update on a new fleet, new routes, or just simply the automation project? Yep, I'm bumping a 1 year old thread.

They won't replace the fleet until it absolutely becomes necessary . Take Disneyland as a example, their fleet was down to one train and they finally redid the trains and all they did was put a whole new inside and underneath assembly and redid the shell in the front and back to make it look retro. We can only dream of a new fleet but it costs $ $. I'm 34, I actually remember being on the original Disney world monorails lol with the swing open doors.

I'll never forget the sound of the CM's walking by slamming all of the doors shut. I miss that sound :)

I too remember that well. However even back then, I thought how inefficient and dangerous with the possibility of slamming little hands.

A new monorail fleet isn't needed. If you properly maintain the existing fleet they should last. I haven't ridden one in a few years so I am anxious to see the disrepair when we go down in august and see if it is as bad as reported.

I honestly would think rebuilding the current trains, complete gut and rebuild would be more cost efficient even if meant tearing them down to the shells and doing new running gear, paint, seats, ac, electrical and so on then buying new trains, I don't see them buying new trains unless they planned on enlarging platforms and making the trains larger or longer.

Do a Disneylandish rebuild, not retro, but a down to the bare bones and rebuild them type of deal, plus cameras and the such to improve safety at the same time.

Ok so i've read to page 4 and one of the leading arguments against an expanded monorail system is the potential havoc caused when one breaks down. Wouldn't this issue be reduced or eliminated with battery banks under the cars for emergency use? flip a lever, push a button and away you go to the next station using "backup power". I can't imagine why a simple system couldn't be devised to drive a monorail the 1-5 miles needed to get it to a station via batteries or even a small onboard generator.

an answer in one word -----> 'weight'

on a 12000 lb electric forklift, the battery is 1/3 the weight of the lift itself... where weight is a factor to the point that the skins are fiberglass to begin with, i think the monorails are on the cusp of underpowered... of course if they were running on batteries, then there would be no need for 600v on the rail itself.

... and even if they did put in batteries, it only solves half the problem. The batteries would help in the even of a power failure on the beam, but you would still have to deal with trains having mechanical failures.

Automating the trains is a so so idea for Disney cause you got a lot of people and boarding times etc may differ . Can already see it now people trying to board and please stand clear of the doors comes on and they start closing on people . Especially also if you got handicap people that need extra time etc.

Actually automated lines are much much more intelligent then that DC and a few other cities are testing partially automate lines right now and they are working marvelous, Also take a look at most airports with a rail system they are automated with not significate issues with handicap individuals getting on board.
