I know what you mean. I will try to train myself into this line of thinking, to enjoy the area better.

To me, I grew up with Thunder. The area in front of it wasn't a crowded, bustling town. But a transition area from the town to the deserted Thunder valley.

Like Mos Eisley. If you grew up on Star Wars, you thought of it as a small town, a backwater. In the later versions, Lucas transformed it into a large bustling hub. I have never made that mental transition either.
I can see the benefits of both. I don't have many memories of that area pre-splash...as we only visited it a few times before going overseas (and, I was very young, but I do have memories from that trip), and construction on that area for Splash was starting up the year we came back from Europe and I started going every year.

I still think the biggest crime committed by Splash Mountain is the disruption of the geographic and chronological tableau created by Liberty Square and Frontierland. It's an island of the foothills of Georgia in the middle of the deserts of the American West.

I can hear that..to me, even though I saw Song of the South, I never really thought of Splash as being in Georgia. The mountain itself could be anywhere. The foilage, construction style of exterior facades, and animals / story really could have taken place anywhere in the south / Midwest.

Now, if they had tossed in antibellum mansions and cotton or tobacco fields, I'd wholly agree.

But, I think it works at WDW...Disneyland, however, I felt like it sticks out like a sore thumb...but, I'm wasn't to fond of critter country as a whole...

My only issue with the splash and Btm area are the crowd patterns, particularly during parade time. The mini boardwalk is a help, but it was somewhat poorly designed in hindsight. The bridge beside splash is atrocious around parade time, as is the intersection in front of splash and Btm entrances. That's the best they could do? Probably not, they just didn't anticipate the massive crowds that would eventually 'flood' that area (see what I did there? :)) Possible solution? Alternate path around TSI that links up next to the HM queue .. it's a pretty long way tho.

In the early 90s, there was no reason to think Splash Mt. would be the last E-ticket added to the Magic Kingdom for 22 years and counting.

I agree. Splash's position doesn't bother me at all, and it feels like a transition across the south into Texas. At DL, Splash and the HM are next door neighbors.
