New expensive "interactive" merch - Haunted Mansion Ghost Post

I've always spent too much on Disney merch/souvenirs and I know will continue to spend on things that I definitely don't need. My family's all-time favorite ride has always been Haunted Mansion and we are excited to see what they will send us! I've considered doing a fun subscription box for a long time and this was perfect. I don't care if you call me a foolish mortal, I AM PUMPED to see what they send! :)

Ya know - we are all foolish in our own ways. My hubby pokes fun at me for scrimping on no brand salt...but I just spent $75 for japanese glass bits with holes in them at the regional Bead and Gem fair. It makes me happy!! Enjoy your splurge. you work hard enough for it. The way I see it - money represents the time that we have put in to earn it - so spent it your own way.

Just please let the rest of us know what is in the boxes ;)

That's one way to ensure you have sufficient product. Apple represents only 13.9% of mobile phones while Android is 82.8%.
In your attempt to show your disdain for Disney's decision, you mistakenly used completely fabricated statistics. I really could not care less about smartphones, and specifically which one is better, but made up facts are made up facts.

Lets get this straight bucko, you are ill-informed as Apple represents just a splash in the smart phone bucket, while Windows phone is a mere drop. I'm not a fanboi nor a tyro. I think your fork has run out of juice, please locate the nearest wall socket and recharge.

ok. You were right and I was wrong about you making up numbers; you were just disingenuous with the numbers you DID use. Your numbers are world-wide and completely irrelevant as this product was for US residents only where the IOS/Android ratio is much different. I would look it it up, but i just don't care that much.

I just get so tired of reading people on this board using rhetoric, sensationalism, disingenuousness, etc instead of having adult conversations and discussions.

...back to my lurker state.

A bit off topic but relative to the iOS vs. Android numbers for the US.

You're right in the US, it's a much narrow margin.

It's around 50% for android and 40% for iOS in the US. iOS has slowly gained over the last two years closing the margin.

While Apple has the US Marketshare in terms of OEM (phone manufacturing), Android still has the US market share when it comes to the OS. Which is the whole point of this topic and what @networkpro was referring to.

I think the iOS exclusivity has a much simpler explanation. With only 1,000 units being shipped, it's much more cost effective to only program one version of the app. Between Disney and Apple's past partnerships and the fact studies show iPhone users tend to have more discretionary income, well it's not surprising which direction they went.

Since this sold out quickly and was likely a test to gauge interest in a subscription merch box service, I'd expect it to expand to Android when the test is expanded to a wider offering.

Limited to 999 participants...so they're going to generate less than $200,000 in revenue on this project? How does this project make any sense from Disney's POV?
Well,
they probably had two developers work on this and the Star Wars one for 3 months: $30K
The cost for the actual box sent is probably $10 x 3 boxes x 2 programs (SW & HM): $60k
Cost for whatever in-park interaction maybe another 50k?
So that's $140,000 out of $400,000 = $260,000 profit.
It shows proof of concept (the HM ones sold out quick), it turns developers (normally a cost) into profit centers (they pay for themselves and still have time to work on other projects), and if you extrapolate this out, every 8 promotions makes $1,000,000. You could easily do this for holidays, corporate events, and other attractions.

Does it really matter which phone brand has a bigger market share? Are there at least 999 people who have an I-phone and $200 to drop on this thing? Obviously yes since it sold out. End of story. The only thing worse than the constant Disney vs Universal debates here are the fanboi vs anti-Apple debates. It's a phone...who really cares what brand it is.

For what its worth, the grape vine has informed me that apparently the iOS only compatibility had less to do with market share and more to do with it just working. iOS devices are all pretty much the same, in that similar hardware and the SAME OS on each unit. Android does not (and most likely never will) have such a claim. While there are far more android units on the market/in hands, they are too varied model by model to be sure the interactive element of this will work (properly) on every different version. People would not be happy to have spent $200 on something that doesn't work on their hardware. Apple devices are a "safe bet" as they can program one that works for iOS and it will almost certainly run on all devices in that family. This is also why you mostly only see Iphone cases (or samsung, as they are the most popular android manufacturer) for sale in the parks.
