New effects in The Haunted Mansion

Some rude people on that video's audio. What if there were kids in nearby Doom Buggies?!

More importantly, how would they like it if they just removed the effect all together and left that area blank while they work on the new AAs?

Ugh.
The outbursts sounded like they were coming from kids. Rude, obnoxious kids.:( If the area had been left blank or (worse) the attraction closed for a period of time), they, no doubt, would have been ruder and even more obnoxious. What we were witnissing was immaturity at it's worst. I'm looking forward to the finished product.

It really doesn't look great in person. There are a few issues.

You can tell that they are being projected onto black curtains. It looks rather cheap. At least use something solid? You can see the curtains sway back and forth with the HHG projected on it.

It just looks TOO bright and TOO CGI. It just doesn't fit in with the rest of the mansion.

Also, part of the success of the previous HHG effect was that no one could figure out how it worked. There are no projectors, no AAs behind you or whatever, nothing. The effect was really well done, and yet if you know how it is done, it's so simple. Now, however, you can see the BIG HD projectors, and the light rays, shooting across the room.

I think it's so shocking as well because it's the climax of the ride, where you are supposed to see YOURSELF being haunted by a ghost, as per the narration. And now, with the scrim in the way, you just see the HHG floating along by, not even in sync with your doombuggy.

IF the projections were matched up with a 3D AA or surface, similar to Constance (the bride), and the mirrors were brought back, I could definitely see an overal upgrade and improvement! But for now, it's too shocking, and I see why most of us (who have seen it in person) are little upset.

Just going back to the Nemo thing, there is actually an additional flat piece of glass between the ride vehicles and the tank window. While the tank walls' plexiglass do reflect things, their curvature would interfere with the effect.

Also, the animated fish appear directly in front of you. The windows are perpendicular to the floor, so what they'd reflect would be the riders themselves. They needed to place a slightly-angled piece of glass in front of each tank window to reflect the projections, which are being shown on a screen above and behind you. If you look at the edges, you can see the edge of this angled piece of glass.

Oh, and the only thing *in* the tank relating to the effect are a line of white rocks on the floor in front of the windows, marking the area where the animated fish "appear" to be from the perspective of the riders. The divers are instructed to stay out of this area to keep from messing up the illusion.

The memory that came to mind as I rode was of the 90's live action Casper film. It wasn't a pleasant moment. I know it's temporary, but I really feel that whoever did the CGI for this barely looked at the characters they were replicating. They're badly off model, and look far too goofy. Ezra in particular just looks wrong. I hope the sculpts for the new/refurbed AAs aren't based on these models.

I think they do now.. Looks like a very good compromise for just blocking off the area or even worse, closing the attraction.
Yea just think, we could have had disco hitchhiking ghosts. :lookaroun

Do we know how long this will be up? I didnt see any dates.

I rode Haunted Mansion on Monday night (President's Day) and didn't see the projections at all. It was same old same old. (...and I am glad.)

Rude kids abound at WDW but so do adults. If it is temporary then fine. If it is not, well when you do fullscreen on youtube, it doesn't look that great. But I agree it is better than nothing.

Those people in the video made me laugh. I have to agree that I'm not a big fan of this effect even if it's temporary. To me it takes away from the creepiness of the attraction, it's along the same lines as someone with a hitchhiking ghost hand puppet saying "Hey kiddies, it's your old pal Ezra". Also don't like the designs, they look like they belong with the new characters in IASW.

I just talked to a manager type person and she said hopefully some time on march. The queue was supposed to be completed march 1 but has been pushed back.

I'm just praying nobody changes their mind and decides to make any of this permanent. I find it rather cheesy and I don't like the recent trend in rides of making everything with projector screens and 3D glasses. I think there's more brilliance in what Imagineers accomplish in real-world effects, sets, and AA technology.
