New DVC Resort in planning to be built on old STOL location

Proximity to the resort that I questioned was for that fact it is suppose to be a HUGE development. As some pointed out, it would then be between the Wilderness Lodge and the Campgrounds. I figured this would give a reason to due something with it, since it would solve the problem of access, and it being isolated from the resort hotels. This from what I have come to understand was one of the major reasons it was closed, and the money to keep doing anything with it could not be justified at the time. I have also been told, they felt it was also not worth spending the money to even bulldoze it back then. It was just cheaper to walk away from it.And to answer the question of why i am telling this here ,there are others who work at disney on this site also and tell others. That is one of the reason for this site is it not? We are a small community here that like to share our thought, ideas, and yes.. our secret about disney with each other. I know that is why i am here.

Whilst I doubt a resort of any kind would be built on the STOLport (who wants a view of the MK Autoplaza?) I do recall a few things from recent weeks

That area was marked for resort development in the old master plans, and is categorized as suitable for development by the RCID. The site does not, however, extend to anywhere near River Country.

Got some info today from our construction contacts, that a new DVC resort is in the final planning stages, to be built on the old STOL site. I asked them if River Country would be affected by addition, as in demo'd due to it's proximity to site, and the reply was "It is included in the planning for use for the resort complex, but not finalized on whether it will stay and be refurbed or demo'd."

Check out the 11 March update on http://www.wdwmagic.com/resorts_news.htm for some other info on this.

But why include River country if it is closed for health reasons?

Health reasons weren't the only motivation for the closure of River Country. There are lakes that are used for swimming by my house that are MUCH worse health-wise that River Country would ever become. River Country had a bit of a filtration system, and I believe the water from RC only flowed into Bay Lake, not the other way around. There was no way the water could get into RC without going through the filtration system. Other factors helped toward the closure of RC, such as a bad location and bad attendance.

And if RC were to be used for this "proposed" DVC resort, I highly doubt that they would just open it back up without a rehab or renovation. Possibly and entire facelift. As of now, it's positively decrepit.

Thank you Marni!! Thank you Steve! Was not aware of that post.Glad someone else see's and know's something about what I am talking about. Now that I have seen the picture from Marni, I am guessing that they would probably demo RC, if they bring the canal in for boat service to and from the magic kingdom and other resorts, as they mentioned.

I knew I should've asked a DVC CM last week about where the next DVC resort was going to go.... ;)

An interesting thing I see, is that location's proximity to the Epcot monorail line. It would an awful tease to put a resort there and not have it hooked into the monorail system. :)

That's the way it was supposed to work, but it didn't. Shortly before River Country closed (my last visit in the park), all the kids were tossing around the hundreds of dead fish that somehow made their way into Bay Cove and died there, presumably from the chemicals. It was more than disgusting, in fact, I still can't believe they had the park open while it was in that condition.

Yep - the part of World Drive that I`ve shown with a red `bend` in it actually provides a monorail station-sized plot of land right inside the resort development area.

Just remember this is news and rumours for a reason!

A few months ago the rumor was the STOL location was going to be the staging area for construction of the DVC resort/wing at the Contemporary. That makes a lot more sense than actually building a resort at STOL.

River Country is not near enough to STOL for that part of the rumor to have any credibility.

I am a construction project foreman and my sources have told me that Disney will be building something new, somewhere, in the near future :D

I still question every person that says they are in the "know" about these things and posts the information here. By contract I am not allowed to discuss any plans, prints, or ideas that are being tossed around on "possible" projects untill the official announcements are made and construction contracts signed. I would not risk my job or reputation simply to be the first person that said something about it.

I am very familiar with how construction/renovation projects are handled from start to finish and I seriously doubt WDI does things much differently than everyone else when it comes to the planning and flow of such projects. The last large project we worked on had 3 ideas thrown around and tossed out the window before they came up with the final plans. Some ideas stayed the same, yet others were completely abandoned.

I know this is the "rumors" section and that rumors are great to discuss and very fun to talk about. I just question the validity of stating such rumors as facts.

Yes, the STOL is not close to the RC, but a canal to the new resort would be. Boat traffic coming to the resort from the Wilderness campgrounds would have to round the bend right by RC,and would see it and I don't believe they would like guests going to the resort to see that mess. Which i believe would spell it's demise, as demo was mentioned to be one of the possibilties.
