New Disney Characters??

What I think Disney needs to do as of right now is focus on teenagers (presumably from the ages of 14 – 18). Bringing Doug back would certainly generate dollars for the company as long as it’s done correctly. Relaunch the program regularly on television, release the seasons on DVD, and continue on with a brand new season. I know that would work from seeing posts on social networks of old fans wishing/begging for Doug reruns and so on. Plus it’s a huge missed opportunity for Disney; I mean they bought the rights to Doug when the show was hot then little by little Disney killed it on its own. I say either learn from your mistakes or just give the rights back to Jim Jinkins (I hear the man is desperate to work with these characters again).

Nickelodeon beat them to the punch, Doug now airs every weeknight on TeenNick and they've put the full seasons up for purchase on iTunes. The Nick version was always superior to Disney's Doug imo.

Yeah, as a member of that generation, I can attest to the near-unanimous hatred of Disney Doug. I'd rather see Disney come up with some great new cartoons like Phineas and Ferb and promote them then just buy someone else's characters and plop them in where they don't belong. God, I miss the olden days of Disney Channel...

I know, I have to wait around 1:30 am to catch Doug lol.. Anyways if that is proven to be successful on Nickelodeon’s part then that should be Disney’s waking call, they own him! If not I would suggest Jinkins or Nickelodeon itself to buy the rights back from Disney. Primary example, last year Haim Saban bought the rights back to the Power Rangers after Disney ruined the franchise to the extreme and now it’s doing alright again. Same can be done in this situation if you ask me.

I've noticed alot of references to Lucas & Star Wars popping up. My son just made his almost daily comment this afternoon.....'Dad, Hollywood Studios really needs to focus on Star Wars more and make that area bigger.' If you think about it, Star Tours kept Star Wars relavent (at least to the main stream population) between trilogies. I think it would be HUGE for both parties if they escalated the Star Wars prescence.

They already sell Smurfs in Germany Pavilion in Epcot, why not add the characters. The little blue guys would fit in great at Disney!

Yea but that just makes too much sense. The best thing for Star wars would be for Lucas to let other people take control of the IP. He could still have input and oversee things but leave the creativity up to others. The problem is Lucas wont do that, he just does what he wants. I guess if I had a bazillion jillion dollars Id do what I want too.

maybe the dr suess character. That would be nice to see at disney parks. And i also agree with nintendo characters being licensed. I would love a zelda ride or a metroid ride.

how about dragonball. Its still very popular and with disney distrubuting ponyo, this wouldn't be to far fetched.

Uh, that IS what he does. The movies, yes those are his. Just about everything else is done by others with him only signing off on the outlines. Books, games, the Clone Wars series, they all work exactly how you said. Not sure about Star Tours 2, he might have involved himself a bit in it, but I seriously doubt he was running everything.

Universal owns the rights to Dr Seuss for theme parks and they have Seuss Landing at IoA already.

Dragonball Z sucks. Keep it far away from TWDC.

Hey Guys!

I heard that while talking about their Q3 earning, Disney has hinted about purchasing new characters/franchises to add to the Disney fold (as they did previously with Marvel).

What does everyone think about this?? What current non Disney franchise would make the most sense or make you the most intrigued??

The article mentioned Bob the Builder as one potential character, but to me he just blends in with the playhouse Disney gang. I'd love to see something that's different then what the parks currently have to offer.

Isn't handy mandy disney's response to bob the builder? On top of that, the rights for BB is with PBS and or Comcast. Disney bidding out PBS for BB's rights is going to be a bad PR move, it could also damage the relationship that PBS has with Hit Entertainment.

The only way to get the characters we enjoyed in the past..Is to return The Disney Afternoon...But, chances are very doubtful...As people want to see Princesses, Computer animated characters...and Preschool characters....Let's face it...We had it made in the 70's-90's.. Technology, Buisness & nonsense has taken over and no one cares of Nostalgia...:(

You are right to a point. He has let others expand on the series with the EU. The problem is that none of it is actually considered star wars cannon and Lucas can, and will, change whatever he wants at any time. The point of my post was that anything major with the series is controlled 100% by Lucas. I have no doubt that if a star wars expansion was to happen, it would be very similar to the JK situation at Universal, He would demand total control. Lets face it, Lucas has not had the best of track records as of late. And although I love Boba Fett, the rumblings of a film about him shows that point. Im not saying a Lucas expansion cant happen, I just think that He wont give up enough control for Disneys liking.

Any EU since the Zahn Trilogy is canonical. Some things they would rather forget (Dark Empire), but its all there. The prequel trilogy also made them retcon some things, but overall it wasn't bad.

There are many, many, many major things that he has OK'ed but not outright controlled. The Star Wars Universe is actually much more vast when portrayed by others.

I guess while technically anything approved for release under Lucas licensing is cannon, I dont interprete it as really true cannon. Lucas has 5 levels of cannon; G, T, C, S and N (and thats the order too). G cannon (G for George) is absolute cannon and trumps all other cannon. The only story outside of the movies and TV to be G cannon was the force unleashed video game, according to interviews from Lucas.

I think we are not seeing things from the same perspective. While Lucas does give control with the EU, the average Disney guest doesnt really care about that. No one is going to care if an attraction opened staring Prince Xizor or Admiral Thrawn or darth reven, except maybe some of us nerds. The general public want EP1-6 and the clone wars, and I just dont see Lucas letting anyone else run with them on such a major stage such as WDW. Trust me, I SO TOTALLY hope that I am wrong about that, but history says otherwise.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thought "Nintendo!" immediately. Disney and Nintendo really do have similar philosophies--I feel like they are a good fit. There were a couple posts saying they don't want Mario and co. walking around the Magic Kingdom... fair enough, Nintendo could easily be a fifth gate! ;) Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and Metroid-themed lands. Meeting Mario and friends would be a freaking dream come true for me. Disney should have tried to jump on this when Pokemania was at a fever pitch, but better late than never!

Of course, that'll probably never happen, so my second pick would be to not buy new IPs, but reinvigorate the Disney afternoon. Holy God that animation block ruled. DuckTales forever. DUCKTALES FOREVER.

Also, it might have been a joke, but I saw someone mention Godzilla. That would rule. I wonder how that would work, with Legendary Pictures working on a new US Godzilla for 2012 (more likely 2013 at this point). What kind of relationship does Disney have with LP (or for that matter, the original Japanese studio, Toho), if any? A Godzilla dark ride at DHS (or even AK?) would be mind-blowing. You know what? I want this as bad as a Disney Afternoon re invigoration. I've been a fan of the big G practically since birth, I'd love to see him stomping around. A meet and greet with Mothra and Rodan? Totally insane. Hahaha, maybe at the Japan pavillion in Epcot?
