New costume for Star Tours

Because this is not star wars, it is star tours. They are basically flight attendents, so why would they be dressed like storm troopers.
This.
Not true. When I was hired, I was asked where I wanted to work, and they told me what was available. Main Street Ops I told him was my first choice, and he very kindly gave me the slot.
Yes, its absolutely true.

1. Main Street Ops is different, because its not divided into separate attractions. Also, that area was open because most people don't want to do that work. If you wanted a more popular area, you would have probably had to be put on a waiting list.

and 2. When you accept an area like, say, Frontierland, the attraction you get is entirely up to that area. You have little to no say in the specific attraction you are placed at.

(its all a shame, really, because so many people end up at attractions they won't be happy at)

Why not just have recognizable costumes from the movies, such as Storm troopers, rebel uniforms, heck even an ewok or two? I'm serious, why look to make a generic, "this is an otherworldly fashion", uniform?
Probably because Lucas trademarks thing within an inch of their life.

I'm pretty sure that is situational.

When I was a CM the only choices were greeter at Diamond Horseshoe or Kilimanjaro Safari. I got to pick between those, but they were the only option.

When my wife did her CP she got "Attractions" and was then just basically assigned to Safaris with minimal input from her.

Yes, but if Main Street Ops didn't need any CMs, Disney would offer you an area where there were open spots, and you would take that area or not be hired. One of my friends desperately wanted attractions in Fantasyland/the Magic Kingdom, but the only attractions location they had was Future World East, and she took it, because it was that or nothing. And another friend wanted photopass, but they didn't have any openings in the role at all, so she ended up in QSFB. Plus, Main Street Ops always has availability; they have extra PAC shifts up on the Hub all the time for anyone at all to pick up. Usually it's pretty hard to get the exact location/role you want.

When my wife did her CP she got "Attractions" and was then just basically assigned to Safaris with minimal input from her.

Yup, CPs have a different process. They get to pick what roles they want, but all they can do is suggest to the interviewer the location they want in those roles. And even worse, most of them don't find out their location until they've already moved to Orlando, gotten their apartment, and gone through half the hiring process at casting. To use a Disney quote, "There's no turning back now... (sinister chuckling)" The only way for them to know where they'll be beforehand is if they know someone who has access to the Hub, but even then, they only show up there three weeks or so before their arrival date. Luckily, I was one of those CPs, so my location wasn't sprung on me at casting, and doubly luckily, I ended up in a good location.

Okay, now I understand, and there is no connection with Star Wars. My mistake.
When are Star Tours weekends this year?

Of course it's related to the star wars films, but the storyline is that you're taking a harmless tour to another planet and then accidentally end up involved in situations from the films. The CMs working at star tours are meant to be like travel agents. Storm troopers as travel agents? Doesn't make sense.

Yeah, I know, but I bet the CMs would like the Storm Trooper uniforms better.

Yeah, because Disney and McDonald's forced people to eat themselves into obesity. Oh please.

Which is why he said "in part." A lot of things contributed to the rise of obesity in the U.S. But thanks for pulling out that one sentence from his entire post.

I too thought they looked Trek-ish. Too brightly colored, I think. When I think Star Wars, I think drapey, earth-tones, layers. Just me.

All arguing about obesity aside, I'm actually a little annoyed by these costumes. I feel like the designer was told "design a Star Wars costume", they google image search'ed Star Trek instead (because to people who don't know anything about them, they're the same thing), and viola.

Seriously, CMs work where Disney sticks them. If they don't want to work at the location Disney offers them when they apply, they don't get hired. The CMs at Star Tours look just like all the CMs everywhere else. I'm willing to bet that many Star Tours CMs have never even seen a Star Wars movie, or at least seen any of them besides the first one. A lot of people I work with don't even like/haven't seen many Disney movies, even though our three rides are all based off of Disney classics and most Disney fans would kill to work where we do.

Anyway, I think the costumes are fine. They're not that Star Wars-y, but they look like interplanetary flight attendants, which is essentially what they're supposed to be, right? They're much better than the blinding things the CMs used to have to wear.

Actually, since Star Tours 2 is considered a new attraction, CMs had to interview for a position there. Management was able to hand pick who they wanted to work there, so chances are you'll have some fairly knowledgeable CMs who know at least something about Star Wars...

I like the costume btw. Can't wait to see the real thing. I hope they are made out of the same material as the Mission: SPACE jumpsuits. Those things are comfortable.

You can always call up the coordinator of training and hint where you wanna go. That's how I ended up at Splash Mountain.

The point that everyone is trying to make is that while the pictures might look one way, even if these exact costumes are made, they will look completely different and have a different overall visual effect when they are put on an obese person.

I personally think these costumes look great in the concept art, but if you put a 300lb person in the, they're definitely going to have a different look to them. The lines that are made on a slim person aren't going to be the same, certain colors are going to be used in a larger ration than others...etc....

On the subject of weight, I guess it can effect job performance too it you dive into the subject, but we probably shouldn't...

That is true. Costumes do look good in pictures and probably won't look exactly the same on different people. That's just how it goes. We'll see how the real thing looks when the ride opens.

I think the costume is cute. I wouldn't mind wearing it (if I ever decided to cross-train there).

You do realize that most people working any given attraction did not necessarily choose to be there, right?

That may be true for many locations, but the CMs had to interview specially to be on opening team for Star Tours

Plenty of Cast Members would probably prefer to wear jeans and a t-shirt. It does not make sense to the story or experience. Each successive film introduced new clothing, no reason the attraction could not do the same.

Then again, I do not like it when Star Tours Cast Members wear a lightsaber, they are not Jedi.

I, um, worked at Peter Pan and have never seen Peter Pan.

It's supposed to be part of training, but the TV was broken.
