I sent Steve all the other pictures

Hoping he posts them quickly.....if he can....my boys are so excited you'd think they could get to DIsney and see it right now....LOL....however, my son just said that the baby is a day old now.

Thanks, KevinPage and orlpassholder for the news and photo of Kianga.

While at AK this past May, I spoke with a CM at the video of Tufani in Rafiki's Planet Watch/Conservation Station, and he told me that 2 babies were on the way. One in July/Aug and another this fall, but I can't remember when. Does anyone else know, or did I dream this?

I'm so excited about the new baby elephant. I've seen Tufani twice while on KS at AK and got a pretty good photo of him last time. I hope to snap a pic of Kianga this Oct, if she's allowed out on the savannah by then. Does anyone know how old Tufani was before they let him roam with his mom and aunts?

I think that elephants are amazing, sensitive, special creatures and I've been fortunate to see them up close in the wild in Africa.

Glad to hear there's more on the way!

As a side note, that 5 out of 13 number that's survived must not include Ringling Brothers breeding facility. They have GREAT success there.

EDIT: Nevermind, that only includes African Elephants. Ringling Bros. facility breeds Asian elephants. http://www.ringling.com/cec/

When we where there last September, we caught a glimpse of the baby elephant born last year. It was soooo cute!

It was too far away to see it for long as there was a large rock and a tree obscuring your view, but we saw it, even if just for a little second. I am sure we got it on film too, not sure if it was the video camera or the digital camera... but if I managed to get a still of it I will have a look tonight when i get home and post it.

thanks for the info on the mortality rates and diseases and such. i know that the bad zoos (other situations) over shadow the good a lot of the time because sometimes it is all the media covers (exception: Animal Planet)

those pics are cute as they can be.

I saw it on the local news here last night....I thought that AK liked to keep the "real" names of the animals secret????
