Nervous mother

I really want to take my mom to Disney. Problem is she's a bit nervous in crowds and tight spaces... I've sorted the flying bit by going 1st to give her the space she needs... What i'd like are your opinions on which week in 2008 will be the quietest. I'm sure she'll love it, it's just a challenge getting her there! Thanks in advance guys!

Hi Chris
Didn't quite understand your comment on flying - going first to give her the space she needs? - but I would say that January is always good, as are September and early December. If those aren't good times for you, then primarily you want to avoid holidays (incuding the week before and after) and school vacations (summer and March/April). Regardless of when you go, if you get up and get to the parks early, you will beat most of the crowds, get a lot done by early afternoon, and be ready to head back to the resort for a breather just as the rest of the folks are surging into the park. If she doesn't like crowds and tight spaces, then I'm guess she won't really be into the thrill rides, and those (along with the kiddie things) are where much of the crowd is. She will really enjoy walking around World Showcase, riding Universe of Energy, walking the trails in Animal Kingdom, visiting the Enchanted Tiki Room in MK, and watching all of the great shows in each park. She will have plenty of room to herself in those and many other attractions. Enjoy!

Early December can get pretty busy. Christmas decorations are up and local people with seasonal passes go early December because they are blacked out Christmas time....

Whatever you do, do not get caught up in the exit crowd after Wishes,Fantasmic, etc. at park closing. It is terrible. Hang back, have an ice cream and watch the crowds go by.

I had a friend who didn't like crowds, but he did fine at WDW.

I think once you get into the magic, it tends to be OK.

I might avoid Thanksgiving-Christmas, but other than that I think it is fair game.

Diffenitely avoid the holidays what ever you do. The first couple of weeks in December are great and the decorations are wonderful.

The tip DisneyShe gave about waiting on exit crowds by hanging back is also a good one to remember.

One more thing to think about, if kids are out of school it's crowded at Disney World.

The slowest time period is Superbowl weekend.Thats the time to go.

Sorry, I don't agree with you. Having been a res agent for Disney for over 9 years I can't tell you how many families come in. The men go to the game, and mom and the kids do Disney. It's the same when the conventions are in town. They come in as a whole family, the men or women as the case may be, do their convention and the rest of the family plays at Disney...

Try Jan. or Feb. - I hear that the crowds tend to be a little less congested at that time.
Good luck!

I agree with ThinkTink. Out of Sept., Oct., Nov., and Feb. I found Feb. to be the least crowded.

I would also caution against Sept. because the free dining offer has really increased the crowds.

Couple of other tips for avoiding crowds. If you are not renting a car, then use a car service like Quicksilver to get you to your hotel. Stay at a hotel like Coronado Springs that is very big and spread out. When we were there it was nearly full and we felt like it was empty. Also since there tend to be conventioneers that are not visiting the parks their busses are less crowded.

If you go ata slow time of the year and want to see a show, it is likely that they will not be full, so take the chance and hang back from the line and go in just as the show is starting.

If her phobia is documented you may also want to check with guest services to see if they can make some accomodations for her problem.

Good luck!

Also,

Avoid the food courts during peak times. Those can be downright insane.

If you plan to see any of the firework shows make sure you find an out of the way spot that still has a good view - I'm sure people on here can help with that.

Defenatly wait until at least 30-45 minutes after the night show ends to leave the park or be walking out of the gate by the time it starts.

The busses can sometimes get pack like sardine cans. If possible you may want to take taxis when they are too full for your mother to be comfortable. Another option would be for you to stand kind of in front of her but blocking the area so noone else can get to it so that she has a little bit more personal space around her.

Oh yeah, and avoid mission space with her - those capsules are tiny, especially when they close up and the screens tip towards you.

If your mom really gets that upset in crowds, she could talk to her doctor about getting a script for Xanax or Valium to take when she starts to get panicy.
