Sorry, y'all. Gotta vent.

We've been living in this apartment complex since last May. Not been problematic other than other residents who don't like to pick up their dog poop like they're supposed to. We had given our notice that when our lease was up mid-May we'd be moving out. A friend is renting us a big house twice the size of the apartment for less rent. Works for me.

So yesterday morning, prob'ly around 7 a.m. I was in the apartment kitchen puting dishes away, both my boys (15 & 17 yrs old) were in the living room watching tv before they started school for the day (we homeschool). Husband had been gone to work since before 6 so when I heard someone turn the front door and push the door to come in I couldn't imagine it was anyone other than my husband who might've forgotten something or decidede to come back home. I ran to the door to unlock the top dead bolt because it can only be opened from inside. Just when I was about to grab the door my 17 yr old said, "You better look first!" I stopped and looked thru the peep hole in time to see someone, a man, I didnt know in a green shirt round the corner out of sight. I figured it had to be someone that works maybe in maintenance had the wrong apartment. No big deal. I went out to run the running trail within eyeshot of my apartment at around 8:30. The youngest son came outside with me so I wouldn't be alone. The oldest stayed inside and locked the door. When I returned from my run 30 minutes later the oldest said, "Whoever it was that was here earlier came back." It was the same thing. Turned the . Pushed the door. Left when it wouldn't open. My son got a better look at the guy. He had on a black beanie hat & green shirt. Strange. It was almost 80 degrees out yesterday. Why a beanie hat? Oldest son & I left to go over to the house we're going to rent to do some work (we're painting & updating) around lunch time. My youngest stayed home to take care of the dog & work on school. He called around 2:30 to say it happened again. I asked if the man knocked. No. Did he say anything? No. Did YOU say anything. My son yelled, "You have the wrong apartment, buddy!" He said the man stopped & he saw him walk away. Same description. Around 4:00 the youngest was in his room when heard someone pounding on the door. He called my oldest to see it if was him outside. Nope, he was still at the house with me. When I heard what was up I instructed my youngest to hang up and call 911 now. We dropped everything and hurried home. The police were here. Nobody saw the guy. Weird.

Today I stayed home. Didn't go anywhere all day. Around 3:15 this afternoon my youngest son & I left to go let him pay off his game at the local Gamestop and to get some groceries. We had been at the Gamestop for only a few minutes when my oldest who stayed home called me & said someone was trying to get in the door. I told him to hang up, call 911, and I was on my way. I left my youngest at the store and raced back home. I pulled in just behind a State Trooper. I nearly ran him over parking my car. A man in plain clothes walked over to the trooper's car as I jumped out of my car screaming and running for my door. They ran after me. Got upstairs to the door of our 2nd floor apartment. I never saw anyone. I pounded on the door yelling for my son to open it up. I kept yelling and yelling so he'd know it was me. We have loaded guns and, yes, my boys both know where they are and are educated in operating them. We never saw anyone. The trooper took my son in his car to go look around for the guys. This time there were two. One was in the same beanie hat & red shirt. The other was in a black hoodie with the hood pulled over his head. Again, it's 80 degrees outside. There's no need for winter wear. When my son heard someone at the door again he looked through the peep hole in time to see the guy in the hoodie puting something into the lock. Scared my poor kiddo! He's a big boy but he's like this skittish gentle giant. LOL! He ran back to my bedroom with the dog, locked the bedroom door, hid with his phone and the gun, and called the police. It's likely the guys heard my son running because he's a big boy and you can hear him when he runs across the 2nd story floor. They heard him & left.

There's something in this apartment that these guys want. They want it bad enough to not give up after numerous failed attempts. What truly freaks me out is that I was here all day and nothing happened. As soon as I left someone was trying to get inside again. I feel like I'm being watched. That scares the crap out of me.

The police were here and I talked to them for a bit. I understand there's only so much they can do. At this point, no crime has yet been commited. Even if they'd found the guys the only thing that could be done is serve them a trespass warrant for the complex. It's not until these guys get inside that they have commited a chargable offense. The problem is, if they come inside while one of us are here they're literally taking their lives in their own hands. Like I said, we're armed.

I'm guessing tonight we'll get the most valuable items that I wouldn't want in the hands of a criminal out of here and secured elsewhere. I won't be leaving the boys here alone anymore. And when we leave we'll take our handguns with us so those don't end up in the hands of criminals. The rest of the stuff here they can help themselves to. I have insurance.

We were going to have a nice, leisurely 2 month moving schedule. I think that just changed.

Sorry. Needed to vent. I'm frustrated feeling like a prisoner in my own home, creeped-out feeling like I'm being watched, and thoroughly ed that my boys are scared to death now.

That's sooooo scary. I agree with Saget (don't let it go to your head, Bob) - a picture would certainly help.
How soon can you get into the rental house - can you do renovations once you're there?

Whoa....

First off, Sorry this is all happening to you. It sounds terrifying.

Do you have a huge TV or something visible from the street? Other then that, I can't think of anything that a potential criminal would think was in your apartment that was worth trying more then once for.

Another possibility I thought was a case of mistaken identity. Maybe they are looking for someone in particular, and are accidently descending on you and your boys?

Don't let the police off the hook so easily. I am not sure what type of town you are living in, force size, crime rate, but it is not unreasonable for them to pay special attention to your apartment area. They are there to serve and PROTECT, you should not have to live in fear. I am close with many in the law enforcement community, and they take their jobs seriously, this is not something they would tolerate lightly.

Wow. Sorry this happened to you. You said you've been in the complex for just less than a year. You might want to consider somehow having your apartment thoroughly searched. Going by what you described, it's possible the previous occupants of your place were involved in something illegal. Could be there's a stash of cash or drugs hidden somewhere within.

Can you somehow get them on camera and submit to the police?

I would love to but we have no windows that face the door or the stairway to the door. We've only seen the guy(s) thru the peep hole in a dimly lit corridor because of the way the buildings are configured. There's 4 apartments for each landing. Our door is on the inside of the landing and you can't see the stairs or any windows from the door. Thankfully, all the windows and the back patio are 2nd story with no way to get to them without a ladder.

That's sooooo scary. I agree with Saget (don't let it go to your head, Bob) - a picture would certainly help.

Yes, we can move into the house at any time. It belongs to a good friend of ours. He needed to rent it out ASAP and our lease isn't up until mid-May. We figured we'd do all the little updates and touches we wanted to before moving in but hubby & I decided we'll be moving asap now. The problem is if these people are watching us I really don't want them FOLLOWING us. The house is a bit of a distance from here, prob'ly 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Thank you. It's terrifying, yes, but equally frustrating. I don't take kindly to anyone messin' with my "little" (even tho they aren't) bear cubs or my den.

A few weeks ago we had 1 evening that our a/c wasn't working right. It wasn't too hot outside so we opened the windows and kept the fans on overnight. It's likely someone in another unit could've seen the televisions in the rooms or something. We've got big screens in every room. It's been months since any of our larger firearms have passed thru the threashold of this place so I don't think whoever it is realizes those are here. And they won't be here any longer after today. I don't wear much in the way of jewelry. No fancy or flashy clothes. I haven't even carried any of my collectible dolls in or out of here in months. We drive nicer, newer-ish cars but that's about it. Our money is in the bank or tied up in Disney travel. LOL!

I don't know where these people could've seen my kids or anything. They've never gone to any school here because we homeschool. They don't know anyone. We don't know anyone around here. Hubby knows a few guys from work. My in-laws and some of his relatives live in other areas around here but nobody that would screw with us or have any ill will. So strange.

We live in a nicer area. It's a suburb of Houston, kinda. Kemah. Both times it's the Sheriff's office who handles things so I think either Kemah has a small enough force that they also use the Sheriff's department but then again today it was a trooper who got here first followed by the SO. I used to work in law enforcement as a dispatch supervisor. That's kinda how my boys know that if something is in-progress that they should stay on the line with a dispatcher, put the guns away when they're told by the dispatcher, and go to the door when they are instructed to & told the officers are outside waiting for them. I didn't know it but we have a courtesy officer (Sheriff's deputy) who lives in the complex. That's who the plain-clothes guy was who approached the trooper's car when I got here. He came upstairs behind me. He had a badge hanging around his neck (reminded me of our street crimes and narc guys who used to go plain-clothes a lot) and a radio. The complex is gated but I don't think that does any good at all. I see so many cars pulled off to the side then follow us in when we open the gates using our remote. The deputy who came to speak to me said he'd be extra patroling as is the courtesy officer. He did tell me to keep the top lock that can only be latched from inside secured when we are here. He said they needed to force entry to another unit in another area of the complex for something and never could get thru the door. Broke the off. Never got thru that door.

My oldest son is pretty shook up. He keeps saying, "I want dad to come home." Dude, we're safe. I'm here. I don't think these guys want us to be here when they come in. My husband told him he's in better hands with me here since I'm the best shot of all of us. Poor kiddo. It really did scare him.

That's so hard to imagine. I mean, this is NOT a bad area at all. Far from it! I know anything is possible and all but still. I'm gonna do some searching and if I find cash... book the next cruise! J/K! I'd call the sheriff's office. ;)

You can always electrify the doorknob. That worked for Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone.

I'm so not reminding my boys of that. I'll find them at the front door tonight wiring up batteries from lanterns... LOL!

Thanks. There really isn't anywhere to conceal a camera. There's nothing outside the door. We can only see out to the area between the buildings. All the windows to every room of this apartment face out the same direction. Whoever it is would have to go down 1 of 2 sets of stairs and walk out into the area we can see. The other side of the building we can't see is the parking lot. We feel like this is someone who lives here. It's someone close. They know me and they know what I drive. I don't think they've entirely put the pieces together with both boys. They must think they go to school or something or maybe they don't know there's 2 of them that belong to me because we often leave seperately. The building adjacent to us that we can see from our windows has a lot of younger people living there. Also, 1 of the 4 apartments that share our landing has new tenants. I haven't seen them yet but I know they're there. We saw the previous people move out and the new carpet go in. A few days ago I saw a satellite dish attached to their patio that wasn't there before.

Gosh! I'm getting so suspicious of everyone now!!!! That's so not ME!

This is all quite bizarre...

Everything about this is unusual. The casual way they are trying to enter, the fact they keep returning. None of it makes a lick of sense.

Have any of your neighbors been having the same experience? Or is it exclusively you?

A gate is only useful if it is used correctly. If it is open to all, then it's less of a gate, and more of an entryway.

You seem more then well prepared, so I am sure everything will turn out fine. Just stay on your toes, and don't hesitate to keep calling the police.

EDIT TO ADD:

Your complex should be putting out a memo to all residents about this. Are they?

You are much more calm than I would be. Please stay safe.

I agree, I would be constantly checking the peephole and looking out the windows. I don't think I could ever leave the house. I'd also be taking the dog anywhere I go, along with the children. Also, I'd probably have baseball bats or spare chairs sitting around the house to use as weapons since we have no firearms in our house.

Do you plan to keep making noise or something when they come or stay quiet if they come back? It seems like they leave right away when they hear something inside. But if they keep leaving, the police might never find them. By no means am I saying confront them, you wouldn't want to be the one getting in trouble with the law, and I don't want you or your family to get harmed.

Nobody has a spare key to the apartment do they?

It really is VERY bizarre! I agree!

I talked to our neighbor who lives right next to us early this morning when I took our pooch out for a walk (which is quite spooky now before the sun comes up even with all the lights outside). Our front doors are steps from each other. I don't think most of our neighbors are home all day. The people directly above us, I think the wife is. I can hear her washing machine and vacuum frequently. It's not the mister who's home during the day. I can tell when he's home because he walks very heavy. If she leaves and their place is empty I know because her little dogs will scratch at the floors trying to get out of the bathroom she puts them in. Okay. Totally weird I know the routine of the people above us. LOL! I think I'll go talk to her, tho. The couple who lived below us also had a stay-home-mom but her kids were really little, like a baby & a toddler. But they moved out a week or so ago.

Definitely prepared. The boys are acting quite skittish at any noise they hear now. Definitely not leaving them here alone anymore. Just the thought of that is insane to me. They're 15 & 17. I should be okay with leaving them here for a few hours to go get the stinkin' groceries or run errands. Really makes me MAD.

Not sure what the complex will do with notifying other residents. When there was an actual break-in here a few months after we moved in a notice went out. That's when I started the habit of bolting both locks whenever I pass thru the front door. Before that we had just moved from a much smaller area and I was sorta out of that habit. We only locked our doors at night there and sometimes we even forgot entirely. Defnitely had to get back into the big-city mindset.

I hear ya. I refuse to live in fear. That's a big thing for me. I agree, I think I want to take our little dog with us whenever we leave here. I can drop the kids and her over at my in-laws if I need to. I'm sure the rest of the world doesn't find her as priceless as I do but she is a full-blooded toy schauzer. She could be sold for $500 or more easily. I've got protection here so I'm not so much afraid of someone coming in with us here. I just don't like the thought of being watched or my kids being afraid. The stuff here can all be replaced. The family including the dog can't. If anyone tried to come thru the door while I'm here they will not get far so I'm not afraid of that.

No. I want to see these people. The husband suggested I whip the door open and stick a gun in the SOB's face but I'm not going to do that. I think he's just upset at the thought of all this. I'd rather let them come in and be out of arm's reach. That's safer for me. It does seem that they leave when they hear us so I really think they're looking to come in when they think nobody is here. I don't know. I would like to go outside when they turn to walk away. I don't want them to be too close to me. I wouldn't open the door without protection. I'd like to see where they disappear to. They're going somewhere close. The complex isn't super big and it's mostly off-the-beaten-path businesses closer to us. It's not a major road out front. You have to know this place is here, really. If I can see which way when they go when they round that corner by the stairs. Do they go up to the 3rd floor? Do they go down to a car? Do they go down then towards another building? Who are these people??? We'll have to see if they come back. I may or may not have the balls to go looking.

Yes. And, yes. That's kind of my thread of sanity. I know I'm not helpless or at the mercy of anyone who comes into my home uninvited.

did this start happening just after you told the management you were not renewing your lease?

We gave our notice a few weeks ago. The first occurance happened yesterday. The head maintenance guy came over today when the police were here and talked with me. The property manager also came up the sidewalk between the buildings but didn't actually speak with me. She was asking someone else (another maintenance person) if we knew who it was. Nope.
