Nerves of steel??? Not exactly. Definitely UN-nerved.

That's very scary!

They might just be trying doors to see if they can find one that is unlocked. Keep your gun handy and stay safe!!

I'm sorry to hear that this is happening. I know that it must be terrifying. I would suggest a Mossberg 500. Let this guy hear the loud ca- of the pump on his next try at your doorknob.

Usually this would be the case, but since it has happened more than once in a short period of time, I'd say not in this case. Especially since OP said it seems like the people trying to get in should have realized that there were people inside by hearing noises , etc.

In the NE we've had a problem of people reporting where registered firearms are and people burglarizing these residences for the arms...you have any nice pieces someone may know about?

So far so good today. Nobody bothering with us yet. Had to go out to Starbucks & Whataburger for breakfast because I never did get any milk last night. Loaded all 3 of us plus the dog for the ride. About to head over to the rental house to finish up the painting in the upstairs so we can start moving stuff tomorrow.

Talked to some of the neighbors who are home during the day like me. Nobody else has seen or heard anything. We always keep at least 1 handgun within easy reach. Took the big guns out of the apartment last night, tho. No sense in having those here.

That's what my brother said. You don't even have to aim real good with buckshot. LOL!

It's like when whoever it is trying to get in realizes there's someone inside they leave. Definitely seems like they want in when nobody is here.

In Texas things are definitely a bit different. Even being in the metro Houston area, there's a LOT of bubbas. Even if firearms are registered nobody is going to point out who has guns and who doesn't. In fact, we don't even know anyone who doesn't have at least 1 gun. Most people in these parts, it's my understanding, are armed at least in their homes. There's many who carry all the time (legally). The only people who know we own anything big are a handful of family members. We've not had the "big one" all that long. Right now it's extremely hard to get ammo for it and when you do it costs so much that it's not practical to burn it up on the range. For that reason alone that particular firearm has never left this apartment until last night when we secured it in another location. We've only lived in this area of Texas for 10 months. We don't know anybody local. All the hubby's coworkers live in other areas and they're all as squeaky clean as he is or they couldn't hold the jobs they do. They all have to have their TWIC cards which is a big background investigation thing with Homeland Security because they work in & around oil refineries, ports, & terminals.

It's definitely a strange situation and having worked in law enforcement I'm not one to get all jumpy and paranoid at the slightest thing. I know to use my brain and think about things first. That's why the first 3 times someone came to our door on Tuesday I didn't call the police. The two times we've called the police it was kids home alone. I know the police can get to them faster than me most of the time. We've definitely tightened up and become super-cautious.

My oldest son who was here yesterday when the 2 guys attempted to pick the lock was pretty freaked out last night. Very emotional. Poor kiddo. He didn't sleep very well either. This morning he seems to have made more peace with what all happened. It's like we've been telling him, if someone gets into our home while we're here they won't get far before they decide to high-tail it back out or they'll be down. If someone gets into our home while we're not here they're going to take our stuff which is fine. We have insurance for that. Either way, we will be okay. No, it's not fun. Yes, it's unnerving. But we aren't helpless or at anyone else's mercy. In short, we'll be okay.

He should have sneaked right up to the door and gave it one hell of a kick. That would have scared them really good. Any more instances?

That is a scary situation. You are doing everything you have to do to protect your family. Just remember let them cross the threshold first before you put out the hot lead welcome mat. Being in Texas I feel a jury would side with you anyway over someone making multiple attempts of B and E.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

I'd be shaken if this happened too!

We had something similar happen while we were in Hawaii. Our neighbors heard the alarm go off and saw someone speeding away. The person tried to break the glass, not realizing that our alarm goes off if there's a loud noise. There's been a string of robberies in the neighborhood. Some bikes stolen, other stuff out of the garage. We know that the neighbor on the other side of us had a son distributing drugs out of there. He has since been arrested and pleaded guilty. He doesn't live there anymore, but some of the crime has not stopped. Now we have to be especially careful to lock everything when we go away. We used to leave the garage door open, but not anymore. If I'm alone coming home from school, I have to lock the doors. I lock my car and don't keep anything inside of it. Actually, my parents don't mind that because I keep it clean that way. lol. On our last Disney trip, we took my more-expensive laptop over my brother's because we were more worried about it getting stolen than breaking on vacation or during airport travel. Scary.

There was a kid, sixth grade, who we know. He comes home by himself from school. One day, he went to the bathroom, went back in his kitchen, and saw a strange woman, 20, in his kitchen. She said she was the babysitter. He told her they don't have a babysitter, yelled at her to get out, and called the police. Scary considering these are upscale neighborhoods...

That's terrifying! Is there a way to get out of your lease early because of this? I don't know too much about leases, but ours has something in it about being able to get out if it's not safe. Might be something to check in to! So sorry you are going through that!

Get out, would they follow you? It's not your family they're after is it, surely it's the apartment you're in? Don't suffer this for another 2 months.

Stay strong.

First off, very sorry to hear and it sucks that y'all are even havin' to deal with this.
Secondly, and as has been mentioned before, I would do everything (broken lease be damned) I could to get the hell outta' there pronto. Like a lot here have already said, it sounds like they want something inside the dwelling and nothing really to do with your family, per se. If one of the worst-case scenarios were to happen and they crossed the threshold and came at you and you had to defer to DIRT (Drop Intruder Right There) a jury, as sad as it sounds (although probably not here in Texas), might take that into consideration..."There were recurring incidences and they could have gotten out but chose not to."
Anyway, above all, I hope and pray no harm comes to you or your family and all gets resolved with the best possible outcome quickly and y'all are able to get past this soon.

Edit:
On a side note...
I agree about the Mossberg (or any other pump-action scatter gun, for that matter). Just the audible on those babies might make 'em soil themselves and bolt. And if not, you don't need to be a dead-eye aim to do some real harm.
Both of our DD's (ages 18 and 21 and who are both very much girlie-girls and such good, caring, and giving people, but who are also both realistic enough to know the realities of life) were at a range a coupla' weekends ago with oldests DFiance' and his father. Funny enough, one of the guns they practiced with was a Mossberg 500. They also practiced with a Glock .40 and an AR-15. Oldest will be gettin' her CHL soon.
Life is good, but even better if you're as prepared for it, including the crap you really may not care to think about on a regular basis, as you can be.

Nope. No more weirdness. Maybe they finally decided they can't tell if someone is here or not and that we're mostly here. Love the idea about kicking the door. That's a good one!

Thanks. Seems to be okay for now. Thankfully. Yeah, we know someone who shot/killed a guy who came to his house with a gun threatening to kill him. The man had been telling people he was going over to kill the fella we know. When he arrived at the house he made a motion for his gun & that was it. No charges against him. Hasn't made it any easier, tho. It's hard to take a life. That fella has really struggled with it since. I definitely know to let whoever cross the threshold and at least take a step of make a motion towards me. I wouldn't want to shoot someone for nothing anyway. It's such an odd thing. I hope whoever it was has given up on their little quest.

If Tracey is away on work, do you think it is possible that they are targeting you as a single mom? Either way, this is horrible. So sorry to hear this! Hopefully they do not come back.

Kelly,

Sorry to hear this. This sounds way too fishy. Did they find out the lease was up somehow and thought your apartment was deserted?
Empty apartments are attractive to some people.

Perhaps a big NRA sticker on the outside of the door might help?
I'm glad you have the means to protect yourself - maybe you should just move out early. I wish you luck.

Tracey hasn't worked far away in a few years but we had several months in past years when he did. It's the pits. Especially when the boys were little guys I was more worried with how to protect them in the event someone broke in.

I thought it was very fishy, too. Coincidentally, the little family that used to live directly below us moved out before their lease was up, too, and their place is sitting empty. Same situation as us. A good opportunity for a house came up that made it worthwhile to muddle thru a few months of double housing-payments. They left sooner than we did, tho.

We're still working on the move. Hoping to get the beds and most everything over to the house this weekend. It's been a lot of work getting the house ready then last week Tracey was home sick all week. Yeah, a sick man is a big PITA overall but considering how many hours he's been working it was almost nice to have him trapped inside all to ourselves for 6 days, sick or not. LOL!

Anything else occur? Just curious as to what's happened.

Nothing else has happened. Either the people gave up or got the hint that they weren't guessing our place empty very accurately. Like I said, someone is generally here most of the time. Initially we removed the expensive, most sought-after firearms from the apartment and secured them elsewhere. Our hand gun(s) we kept with us. If we left the apartment we could easily secure them and carry them out to the car. That way if someone was going to come in while we were here we could defend ourselves. If they broke in after we were all away they wouldn't get the firearms. Everything else is replacable. We're about 1/4 moved into the new place. Moving the rest of the furniture and big stuff prob'ly this weekend. Been hard with everyone getting sick. We're getting there, tho. Definitely will be out of here well ahead of the end of the lease at the apartment. I was hoping whoever it was would try their act last week when the hubby was home sick. Then again, maybe that wouldn't be a good thing because he's muuuuuch more of a hot-head than me. When it all was happening he kept telling me to try to snatch the door open in time to put a gun square in the guy's face. Um, noooooo...don't want to be within arm's reach of whoever that was. That wouldn't be too smart. But he doesn't think the way I do and I don't think the way he does. Everything seems okay for now. We're still being very cautious and watchful, tho. Thanks for thinkin' of us. :)
