Nasty Accident in Parking Lot at Magic Kingdom

I just returned from my trip to Walt Disney World. I left the Magic Kingdom at about 11:30 PM on Friday (April 21). After hopping on the monorail and a tram I arrived at the Donald Duck parking lot (rows 21-29). As I walked down the row looking for my car, I noticed some flashing lights (disney security vehicles and sheriff) further up the row and an AAA drove past me. At the time, I figured someone had left their headlights on and needed a jumpstart. I was pretty tired from spending the previous 16 hours trekking around Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom... so I really didn't give it much thought.

Once I started driving towards the exit, however, I realized that there had been a vehicular accident... and a pretty nasty one at that. There was a maroon Scion Xb flipped over onto its roof and another vehicle (some sort of sedan from what I could see) with significant damage to the front of the vehicle.

This seemed bizarre to me, as it apparently occurred right in the middle of the parking lot. From the damage, one of the vehicles (probably the sedan) was obviously travelling at a very high rate of speed. Now, I know that people are tired and are anxious to get home at the end of a long day. But, why would someone speed down a parking lot aisle? Especially when there were probably lots of people (including children) walking through the lot.

Anyway, I am sure fender benders are somewhat common at WDW. And I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they occasionally have a serious accident on the roadways of WDW. However, I was quite surprised to see a major accident in a parking lot!

Incidentally, there were no ambulances or fire department vehicles at the scene of the accident when I passed by. But, they may very well have left the scene before I arrived. I'd be surprised if nobody involved in the crash needed medical attention. Although, I hope that everyone was okay.

What a way to end your WDW vacation! Anyone know anything about this accident? Was it reported in one of the local papers? Just curious...

People drive that way in parking lots at home (at least around here); why should they drive any differently on vacation? Quite frankly, I'm surprised that there aren't MORE accidents at WDW.

Wow, that is horrible! I always watch out for the other person. It's not enough that I'm driving as I should. Always on the defensive!

That's another reason to use WDW buses!!

Its one thing to speed on a highway, but it is another thing to do it in a parking lot where there are pedestrians around and people pulling out of parking spots.:brick:

Yeah, that many humans in one place .. something is going to go wrong. It's amazing more accidents don't happen, quite frankly. People speed through my subdivision even though they know every other house has kids .. unbelievable

That is unfortunete. But as stated above, with so many people around it is a matter probability that unfortunete things will happen from time to time.

Actually, you don't have to be going all that fast to be flipped over in your car during an accident. People don't pay attention in the parking lots on vacation, just like they don't at their mall parking lot at home. I have often seen cars ignoring all of the parking line markings and just cutting right across the parking lost during close time to "hurry" to the exit -- like it is going to make a huge difference when there are only a couple hundred cars left in the lot.

If the tow truck had just arrived, then any Fire/Rescue vehicles would likely have been long gone by that point. From monitoring all the accidents that I have the past few months at work, it's generally not until they have made sure everyone is okay or injured parties transported that they call in the wrecker to retrieve the cars involved and upright any overturns.

The Scion xB is an extremely unstable car. It doesn't surprise me that it may have flipped.

Me neither, they look so top heavy and are pretty light. I bet it wouldnt take much to flip one

FRIENDS OF PARKING LOTS- We choose to PARK!

It's okay, everyone. The accident reconstruction report found that the sedan had suffered from high oil pressure for years, so it was only a matter of time until this happened.

Seriously, though, people get a little crazy in the parking lots sometime. I just hope everyone is okay in the end.
