Nasty Accident in Parking Lot at Magic Kingdom

A tire blowing on a newer vehicle such as that will usually not result in the car flipping over. From the description of the scene, more than likely the cars "clipped" causing the scion to flip over. Two of my most recent accidents involving rollovers, where I was the primary investigating officer, were caused by someone turning into the path of another car "clipping" the rear end causing it to flip and the other a small pickup truck pulled in front of a firebird flipping the small ford ranger over. I have yet to see a tire blowing cause a rollover (ie. ford explorer), most just loose control hitting something or are able to safely stop. Not saying it can not happen, but in the numerous accidents I have worked I have not seen a rollover happen because of a tire blowout. I believe a vehicle would have to be at highway speeds (65mph) for a blowout to cause a rollover.

We need to do an investigation into this. Does Disney have DO NOT SPEED signs in their parking lots??? I am sure they have stop signs... Or do they...

All joking aside... I hope no one was hurt....

I know for a fact that Animal Kingdom has 15mph signs in the parking lot and people were driving like maniacs last wednesday the 19th when I was leaving there at 8:30pm.

I think the only parking lot that I have seen that is worse is the Dale Mabry Campus of Hillsborough Community College here in Tampa. That thing is unreal.

Course the parking lot at my church is pretty bad too. You try getting 4000 people out of that thing in 15-20 mins so you can beat the methodist to Sonny's BBQ for some Chicken.

I have seen numerous accidents and it does not take much speed to cause serious damage. From the sound of the accident scene, the scion could have been going as slow as 35-40mph and struck in the rear half by another car and it is very possible it would flip. I have only observed a flipped vehicle at around 40mph but it could happen at a slower speed. On a side note you can figure out the speed of both cars prior to the accident by measuring distance of skid, impact crush on vehicles etc.

Unfortunately, I did not have my tape measure with me. Otherwise, I would have have gotten out of my vehicle and asked the sheriff and security guards to step aside while I surveyed the scene to determine the exact speed of the cars involved in the accident! Just kidding....

The tipped-over Scion was not the only thing that lead me to believe that the vehicles must have been going fairly fast... I also noted that the front of the sedan was decimated.

I am not all that familiar with the stability of Scions. They have a wide wheel-base, but they are fairly tall. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that they tip easily... certainly with a side impact at 35-40 mph.

I don't know about you... but 35-40 mph is way too fast be travelling in any parking lot. Particularly in a parking lot at WDW, at a time when many people are walking back to their cars and cars are pulling out of spaces (drivers of which may be not be fully alert after walking around theme parks for many hours).

Maybe one of the vehicles was stolen. Who knows. But, why would the perpetrator speed away unless they were being pursued? You would think that speeding through a parking lot would just bring attention to you.... something that I assume a car thief is trying to avoid. Incidentally, do they have a lot of cars stolen from the parking lots at WDW?

Perhaps the driver thought he was on the Richard Petty Driving Experience track. We were in the adjoining lot, after all. I can certainly see how someone might see the barricades, become disoriented, and hit the accelerator! Lol...

We'll probably never know what actually happened. I just hope that nobody was seriously hurt. And that people are a little more safe and cautious when driving in the parking lots!

I can just imagine it...

"The parking lot kills people! Shut it down now! I almost died in there!" :animwink:

 maybe they should put health and safety warning signs at the entrance to every WDW parking lot(i love that 'parking lot' it sounds better than 'carpark' what we call them here in britain)

Couldn't a car like the scion strike a low profile vehicle on one side and essentially use that car as a ramp to flip over?
Not likely. Scions are pretty low profile vehicle to start with and tiny to boot.

the car is already low to the ground.... it does have a slightly higher roof side by side with another car, but it has a fairly low beltline. It isn't nearly as high as an SUV, but it is about on par with a small minivan/PT Cruiser style wagon.
