April 9, 2015: On Episode #79 of The Disney Nerds podcast, Jim Hill reports that the Jerry Rees mystery project is the new film for Soarin'. He also indicates that Inside Out will soon be coming to the Captain EO theater. It is unclear if this will be a preview of the new movie similar to the Tomorrowland preview. Jim seemed to indicate that this would be a permanent replacement and not just a movie preview.

He also indicated that in the movie they get on a train to Imagination Land and Figment can be seen in the background.

Well, hopefully this is the beginning of good things for EPCOT

I'm a little hesitant to trust an unverified source like @RSoxNo1. But now that WDWThemeParks.com is reporting this, it could be legit!

If Inside Out just moves into the Magic Eye, I'll be fine, but the precedent that a random Figment cameo in Inside Out could set has me terrified about the ride's future.

So wait, do we know for sure that EO is never opening again?

Not 100% officially, but the signs do not look good. Every other park has already rid themselves of EO or made an announcement that it is going away. Epcot has not carried any Captain EO merchandise for at least a year (which to me was Disney's main reason for bringing back the show) and the overall "buzz" for the attraction has passed now that we are reaching the 6th anniversary of Jackson's death (during my second to last showing of EO, someone literally yelled out "Well that sucked").

Also, even though it was suggested the film will return, the same thing was said about 20,000 Leagues.

"Oh, don't worry, the attraction is just going down for a short refurb...it'll be back"...and we all know the rest of that story.

Shanghai get's it first. I believe DCA is getting it's digital conversion now, so depending on when Shanghais exclusivity ends DCA may get it first if Epcot's has completed it's digital conversion.
DCA's version is expected to re-open with a digital version of Soarin' Over California. Forgive me, but I fail to recall who first mentioned that the new Soarin' film has to debut in Shanghai first. I think we've just accepted it, but I don't remember the original source of that info. @Lee or @WDW1974 was that either of you?

That's what I figured. It'd take a miracle for it to stay. People generally don't care for it anyway. The theatre seems to always be at half capacity or less.

You've got to be kidding...

If they aren't going to give the pavilion the overhaul it deserves and instead keep it stuck in the past, can we at least get a return of Magic Journeys for a while? Heck, I'd take HISTA back at this point over EO.
The pavilion has so much potential. Even more than in 1983. It's not as if a new building needs constructing.

So maddening. Bloody pencil pushers.

It's sad but true, the general audience out there does not care for things that, to them are "old and boring". Today, major Hollywood films cater to the "popcorn flick" crowd who could care less about plot and would rather watch a 2+ hour film involving nothing more than CG monsters, explosions, and witty-banter (or in the case of Transformers, explosions and attractive women).

I think what gets me more than anything is the fact that Captain EO is clearly a product of the 80's but people still treat it like the film came out this year. Of course the effects are going to seem sub-par today, it was made in 1986....the CM running the theater tells the audience this before every showing.

With that being said, I understand the film isn't for everyone, but then again everyone has different tastes (I dislike The Avengers for example). That's why for me, when Captain EO made a return I treated every viewing as potentially the last, knowing that the time will come when the show will end it's run once again.

Overall I'm glad I was able to experience Captain EO in person, it was personally fascinating and it always brought a smile to my face (as well as kept my feet tapping) during every screening. Meanwhile Hooter and Fuzzball now have a year round home on the couch in my office:)

And the theme of "Imagination" is future-proof unlike a lot of the ideas/scenes of EPCOT Center. There's no reason that a well done Imagination ride couldn't last the test of time and develop the sort of nostalgia a lot of Disney rides have.

Question for the Martin: Can the Imagination pavilion as is handle an LPS ride? Obviously some construction would be needed, but would that be possible without basically rebuilding the entire building? I'd love to see a version of Imagination 1.0 come back with LPS tech because it seems to be that would be an easy solution to the turntable problem -- instead of the turntable, you can have vehicles simply go into separate parallel rooms for the Dreamfinder scene; just have enough rooms to allow for the appropriate amount of time for that scene before moving on.

Not that I'm saying I want a complete copy of the original ride, but they could make something with a similar storyline and theme with differences as needed (especially if using LPS tech, to maximize the impact of that).

Plus much of the artwork and set dressing especially the Queen (pre-transformation) was inspired by H.R. Giger which adds a unique 'look' to the whole thing. Captain EO also serves as a reminder what a HUGE talent Michael was gifted with.

I assume that his confidence regarding Inside Out going into the 3D theatre rather than the main pavilion is indicative of some sort of "holding off" on Disney's part. There must be a plan in the pipe line for the ride. And history has shown that whatever major attraction goes into the theatre largely effects the main ride. I doubt there would be an Inside Out ride AND show. This does all depend on whether on not the movie does well. Which it absolutely will. It actually bodes pretty well for Figment, I think.
