I agree with the general notion that the hat does not work as the MGM/HS image simply because - and only because - the image references a very specific date which is inconsistent with the graphic. It has nothing to do with whether or not the hat is generally accepted or might be taken down in the future. Rather, the images have a bit of a retro feel to them, as though they might have been items for sale that year when the park opened. That being the case, the hat would have only been a glimmer in the eye of (oh, I don't know, let's just say Meg Crofton for the sake of illustration). If the year provided was [insert year during which the hat was present], then it would be just fine.

Just out of curiosity, why is the top of the spaceship earth image "rounded" but the bottom is a sharp point, like the bottom corner of a square? Is that because t-shirt prints tend to be limited to rectangular templates and you wanted to use up as much printable space as possible? Some of the round "spherical" effect is lost in this sharp point.
