My cat is missing

I had a cat for nearly 14 years and I can also attest that they are truly strange animals. She would stay away / hide for loooooong stretches at a time and only show up when it was hungry. Being an indoor cat, it didn't take change very easily either but when she did want to explore she would go on her excursion and show up whenever she felt it was time.

I'm sure your cat will come out when it's ready.

Your cat is like one of my ex's. He got out sometimes but in the morning was either wating by the front door or the back sliding door. Give it some time. He'll probably come home within 24-48 hours from now.

all of my aunts cats were strays. There was this one Snowshoe Siamese named Possum (he was mistaken for a baby possum when he was found on the side of the road as a kitten) that went missing out of the clear blue. My uncle and dad were building a shed out in the backyard and we thought he got in there when they were moving stuff back in but he wasn't. We haven't smelt anything funny coming from there so we know he is not in there. Sometimes cats will just run off and die somewhere because they don't want their owners to find them dead so the run away and die. Weird I know but it happens. That is what we think happened to Possum because he was really old. Sorry about your cat.

At our shelter, I've not seen a single cat returned for scratching, but many returned for personality changes and behavioral problems following declaw. Kind of a freak thing but it happens more frequently than you would think.

Glad you found your cat PHD.

Erika - I have had three cats that were declawed and did not have a behavorial problem with any of them. If you are going to declaw a cat, it should be at an early stage NOT when the cat is older & has established habits. I do understand how some folks find it unhumane, I personally don't think there anything wrong with it. The two cats I have now were abused as kittens (thrown out on the interstate during rush hour traffic). They don't like the world outside.....can't imagine why!

Oh and cats without front claws can still defend themselves. Back a few years ago when Gucci (my Himalayan) was still alive, he got outside. The next door neighbors dog had to have 7 stiches put under his left eye - a present from the Gucc's back feet when the dog got to close.

Keep up the good work at the shelter!! :sohappy:

You have been dissed by a cat. (one named Baby no less!)

How funny. (and a little sad, but I guess it was Baby's own fault.)

Still no sign of the cat today, but he isn't upstairs. I called Mr. PhD at work and he said that he (Coby AKA PhD cat) wanted to but he wouldn't let him. My guess is somewhere in the basement. I think I will go look.

Dissed by my own cat... :o . Never thought of it that way  . We spoiled her rotten and she was good at playing the catty role.

Any luck on your cat?

Never?? What, Did the cat pack up it's belongings and leave?

Yeah, she picked up her tail and left. :p Oh, I forgot to mention, she left a little "suprise" in every room in the house :hurl:

I just didn't have the heart to declaw him when we got him. I had heard stories like Erika's and we clipped his nails weekly ourselves since he was young, so he never knew any different. He never bites like some cat's I know that are declawed. I even had a had time getting him netured, but the vet explained to me how it is harder for them and you have more behavior problems if you don't.

We 1st got him as an 1 year wedding aniversary present. We were living in this old appt building on Wanye State Universty graduate housing, and there were no pets alowd. (but we were told if there was a fire you would find more cat's then people.) Anyway he learned to be afaid of the door and when people would come to visit he would run and hide. He still is that way today. But still he has never been to this extent before and we have been doing contruction around here for months now, this is nothing new.

Still can't find him today, but the cat box has been used. At least he is still using the cat box! Nothing like kitty surprizes!

I also lost a cat during renovations. I think he was upset by all of the noise. I also had one wander off to die. It's very sad, because you always wonder if you could have done something to prevent it, and wonder where they are.

I've also had cats show up after a couple of days, once things quiet down. I hope that's what will happen in your case.

Well, to be fair, you've only had 3 ;)

We certainly have more than that at the shelter and therefore are more likely to run across these things! I am not saying that every declawed cat will have these problems.

I am so glad CatPhD has been found!!! :sohappy:

We he has reapeared and seemes ok. (rather neverous, but mostly ok.)

(he atemped to beg for some of our dinner, so all apears well.)

I do wonder how much longer we will have him, he is 10 years old, but is very sheltered. Our having a cat is a bit of a problem with my family, my brother won't come over to our house because he is allergic and we are the only people willing to host for holidays and such.

Thanks for all the support from my friends.

I think we have a lot of animal lovers on Magic.

I'm glad to hear he's ok and that he's eating still too. I hope you keep him longer, another 10 years hopefully. I'm sorry about the family situation, but is there anyway the other family members (the ones allergic) can just take some medicine and handle it? Keep us updated as he know progresses back to his normalcy.

I am very glad to hear the good news. I am a total cat person. My solution to the roaming/straying problem has been that my cats (and I have always had one for the past 18 years in this house) IS THAT THEY DON'T GO OUT. My mom thinks this is cruel, but every book and article I have read says indoor cats are just as happy, and more importantly, more healthly than their outdoor counterparts. My experience says this is the case. Something to keep in mind, and worth researching if you are considering a cat as a pet.

Mine are indoors also- Sorry, but again I reference the shelter  We just see so many horrible things. We're in the suburbs, anyway, so it's not like a farm setting where things are a little bit safer.

Average lifespan for an indoor-only cat: 14 years. Let her outside and it drops to 3

Of course, it's only an average.

Erika -
Both of mine, and my last two cats came from shelters. Salute and support your efforts! Believe me. If this house was larger there'd be more cats!

Hi DisneyPhD! Glad to hear that your kitty is ok. On a side note, after hurricane Ivan, many houses in our area were totally destroyed and many pets were displaced. We were fortunate in that our house survived (with some damage) and we ended up having three stray cats "adopt" us. We've taken two of them to the vet and had them fixed and will fix the third buddy when he gets a little older. I've never been much of a cat lover but I just couldn't turn my back on them. Now I have to come up with some names. I have already eliminated Ivan from the list!

Hi woody  I think pets that find you are the best pets. I kind of think Ivan is fitting or mabye Ivana if it is a girl. I think maybe I should change mines name to skidy kitty from now on.

Ah sadly this cat allergy thing is an ongoing thing, brother won't (or can't not sure which) take medicaiton and won't come in the house. However they did decide that their 4 year old daughter isn't allerigc when her mother became pregnant and they needed us to help out wacthing her. It is just one of those stahlmate things. I would get one of those inoic brezze crazy expensive air cleaners if I thought it would help, mostly for the friends and family that are allergic, but come over and sniffle and snezze anyway. Anyone try them, do they work at all? I think I read that half of all the homes in the US has at least one cat, that must be hard for people who are very allergic.

So Erika we should have 4 more years then? (on the average!)

As far as more pets, I have this kind of rule, no more pets then people. We keep adding people, but not pets so far.
