My 2nd Trip report: April 13-21 2008

As you can all tell from the dates, my trip isn't quite here yet!

However, I thought I'd put a little twist on my trip report by posting the day before we leave, and telling what I did today, and posting my itinerary. When I get back, I will do my trip report and we can compare it to the itinerary and see if we made any changes as we went, or if we pretty much stuck to the itinerary. Here is what we have planned:

Sunday April 13: arrive on WDW property somewhere between 9 AM and 11 AM. Hopefully arrive early enough to check in at POR, then do a horseback ride at Ft Wilderness at 11:30. If we arrived early enough to check in before the horseback ride, hopefully the room will be ready afterwards and we can unpack and freshen up. Then, go to Magic Kingdom around 3 or 4 PM and stay for the rest of the evening. Supper at Liberty Tree and hopefully stay for evening EMH. We're planning on meeting Fizzle75 and his wife Skeeder, both of whom post on this forum, while at the Magic Kingdom.

Monday April 14: Universal Studios all day, then back to resort afterwards. We're meeting up with Fizzle75 and Skeeder for supper at California Grill at 8 PM. Last time we did Universal, we were done by 3 PM or so, so I don't expect to be there much longer than that.

Tuesday April 15: Epcot for AM EMH, then stay until 12 or 1 PM, then back to resort for the afternoon. Then supper at Artist Point along with a carraige ride at FW, then over to Kissimmee for some mini-golf at Pirates Island, where we play on every trip. Possibly go to DTD in the afternoon or in the evening after mini-golf.

Wednesday April 16: Animal Kingdom all day until 4 or 5 PM, then back to resort for rest of the evening with supper at Boatwrights. Maybe Downtown Disney if we didn't do it already on Tuesday.

Thursday April 17: Sea World until 4 or 5 PM or so, then supper at Spoodles and meet up with Fizzle and Skeeder for the Boardwalk and some mini-golf at Fantasia Gardens.

Friday April 18: Beach all day, then over to Epcot for supper at Le Cellier and evening EMH. Probably meeting Fizzle and Skeeder for a final time before they leave the next morning.

Saturday April 19: Hollywood Studios all day, Supper at Mama Melrose

Sunday April 20: Breakfast at Crystal Palace, then MK until noon or 1PM, then back to resort for a nap for my wife and pooltime for me. Back to Epcot in the evening for supper at Le Chefs de France. My wife will want to go back to hotel and start packing for departure in the morning, then go to bed, but I may let her do that while I do some evening EMH at MK after Illuminations. But maybe not...we'll see. Maybe we'll both go back to the hotel and I'll get in the pool.

As the title says, this is the 2nd time I've done a trip report (not a report of my 2nd trip). One of my goals on this coming trip is to correct the mistakes I made on last year's trip. I was way too gung ho about blitzing the parks and using the park maps as a checklist to check off which attractions we still needed to do. I felt like we hadn't sufficiently "done" the park unless we did almost every single ride (with a few exceptions). Even though we were staying on property and had the advantage of transportation back and forth to the hotel for naps, I didn't avail myself of those opportunities until the very last day. As a result, I had my poor wife all worn out, feeling like she was just being dragged around the park. I finally learned that it's only fun if we're both having fun and that if my wife is a half dead zombie following along behind me at the park, then what fun am I having? On one day, we got to the Magic Kingdom pretty much at opening time and we didn't leave until after Wishes. She wasn't very happy with me and I felt like she wasn't having a good time on this vacation, and I realized that next time, I need to do things alot differently. So, with the itinerary I posted above, I feel like I did a pretty good job keeping us in the parks for shorter hours and giving her time to relax and enjoy things outside the parks. The longest day I have scheduled is MGM (DHS), which is a much slower paced park than the Magic Kingdom, so we have alot more time to sit and relax and take in shows instead of running from one ride to the next. Even so, nothing says that we can't decide at the last minute to sleep in that morning and go in later, or leave the park for a while, then come back later. We'll see what happens.

So, here is what we did today, Friday April 11:

We had to run into town and sign a letter before a notary, authorizing my in-laws to make any necessary medical decisions regarding our son, since they will be watching him in our absence. He is almost two years old and we both deem him too young to take just yet, so we're leaving him with the wife's parents. As a precautionary thing, we wanted them to be able to take him to the doctor if necessary and do what needs done.

We then went to the Post Office and got postcard stamps and then to Walmart to get some last minute toiletries for my wife, such as shaving cream, makeup, etc.

Then I had to take the dog down to meet my Dad and send the dog back with him while we are gone.

I also talked on the phone with Fizzle, who arrived last night. He was on his way to Animal Kingdom and then to Coronado Springs to look around. I asked him to check for me if they still have resort specific mugs at Coronado Springs, since I read on these boards that CS, for whatever reason, continues to have resort specific mugs, even though every other resort is now using those generic mugs. He texted me later and said that he got my mug (I'll pay him for it when we meet up Sunday) and he texted me a picture of it.

I had planned on bringing my mug from last year with me, thinking it would be okay since a couple of CMs told me last year that it's fine, as well as what I thought to be ambiguity on the wording on the mug itself. I thought it said good for refills for the length of you stay (which could mean any stay), but when I dug it out the other night and looked at it again, the writing on the mug says "the length of the stay on which the mug was purchased". So, I can't really argue with that...it's written pretty clearly. So, since I don't want to be dishonest, I figured I'd better leave it at home and get a new mug this year.

When we got home, I put a couple more things in the van, and now all that's left is to wait until 4:30 Saturday morning and finish packing and loading up, and then head south.

We'll go to bed early tonight and watch the new Samantha Brown special as probably the last thing we see on TV until we get up in the morning. I hope to leave Mattoon between 6 and 6:30 AM Central Time) and drive until 10 or 11 PM (Eastern Time). Last year, we drove as far as Jasper, FL before we stopped over for the night. This year, I'd really like to get an hour or so past Jasper before we stop, and then we'll only have a couple more hours to drive on Sunday.

Well, that's all for now. I may post something in the morning right before we leave, and then I'll dig this thread up when we get back and post my trip report with pictures!

Just waiting on the wife to get ready, then we can throw the remaining stuff in the van and head out. I had the alarm set for 4:30 this morning, but I ended up waking up and getting out of bed at 4:22. LOL

I like the idea of having the itinerary in advance. I'm sure at least once during the week I will check it to see where you are (or are supposed to be.) Our itinerary didn't change at all, but we had ADRs inside the parks and had two kids with us, so it was more difficult to be flexible.

I know I missed your departure already, but I hope you have a great time.

I thought I was gonna be posting pictures along with my trip report, but I've been having alot of difficulty doing so. So, my pictures can be found on my myspace page at www.myspace.com/sbkline.

I don't have them all uploaded yet...I think I took over two hundred with our camera and I only have about 100 uploaded to my myspace page so far. Then today, I ordered my photopass CD with over 140 photos on it which I may upload to my page as well when I get it.

I'll try to get started on typing my trip report later this week, but it's probably too late to start on it tonight. I have to get to bed and get up at 5:30 in the morning to work at 7. So I may start on it tommorrow evening. In the meantime, feel free to browse my pictures.

Okay...

I don't really post on this board much, but I enjoy reading other posts (and trip reports in particular). Despite becoming familiar with the posts of those who post often (or even semi-regularly), I would never claim to "know" anyone on this board.

Still, I would like to say as a bit of a PSA, that people should be cautious about posting links to their Myspace pages. I know, I know...Myspace is a great social-networking phenomenon that provides "regular" folks like us our own little corner of the interweb to showcase our personalities, and explain what makes us who we are.

Naturally, however, many of us have strong beliefs or convictions which could be considered controversial or, dare I say, offensive to others. And sometimes, those beliefs or convictions are prominently displayed on our Myspace profile pate.

Now, I'm not saying this, or any other public message board should be strapped by the constraints of censorship or uber political correctness. All I am suggesting is that people should think twice before linking to a site which may express opinions of a potentially sensitive nature.

With that in mind, I sincerely look forward to your report.
Woah, overblown much? I thought I was going to find something crazy before I clicked on his myspace, but honestly what's the big deal? We already know his views on certain issues so why would that be surprising at all? I don't really think it was necessary to bring this up in the guy's trip report.

Oh and btw, yes I did look at the pictures. Hope you two had a good time.

Okay, while I'm waiting on supper, I'll post the first part of my trip report which is the road trip, Saturday April 12.

We got up at 4:30 AM and got ourselves and our child ready and packed up the van. We went to my in-laws' house to drop our son off for the week since we consider him too young yet to take. We pulled out of their driveway at around 6:07 AM Central Time. We stopped at a local McDonald's which is right next to the Walmart we work at. The picture on my myspace page is of the Walmart sign as seen from our van in the drive through lane at McDonalds. As you can probably tell, it was a crappy morning. Probably in the 40's, windy and raining. It was like this all the way into Kentucky, but not raining every part of the way. We drove in and out of rain, but the weather started to clear as we came into Tennessee. By the time we stopped in Calhoun, Georgia at the outlet mall, there was hardly a cloud in the sky and the temperatures were in the 70s or possibly the 80s. We spent about an hour at the outlet mall so my wife could do some shopping and get out and stretch her legs from being in the van all day. It was probably around 2 or 3 PM Eastern Time, as we cross the time zone around Chattanooga, Tennessee. We got lunch for my wife at a Taco Bell drive through and for me at a Burger King Drive through. Then, after making one stop for gas and another at another exit for the bathroom, I was starting to think we weren't making any time at all, as we were just stopping at exit after exit.

Finally, we got on the interstate for good. I decided to drive through Atlanta this time instead of around it. It was around 5 or 6 PM when we went through Atlanta. There was alot of traffic, but nothing to keep us from going the speed limit or close to it, so I didn't complain much. If I can go 65 or 70 then I'm good. LOL As we went through Atlanta, we didn't have any backups on the southbound lane, but for whatever reason, we could see the northbound lane backed up for miles. It scared me to death in regards to the trip home, but I'll get to that later. I wanted to make the best time possible, so I drove all the way through Georgia and finally stopped in Lake City, Florida at around 11 PM Eastern Time. That's about 16 hours driving in one day with me doing all the driving, and for some reason my wife was more worn out than I was. Truthfully, I could probably have gone another hour or two or possibly the rest of the way, but my wife was getting impatient to stop. LOL

That's all for now. I'll try to post more later.

I originally planned to copy and paste the pics from my myspace page and paste them on here...it worked when I tried testing it before we left. But for some reason when I tried to do it yesterday, I couldn't get it to work...and I can't remember how to do it any other way. So the easiest way to share my pics is to direct people to my myspace page. And I'm still in the process of uploading the rest of my pics, so feel free to keep checking for new ones.

Anyway, back to my trip report...

Again, here is what my itinerary was for Sunday the 13th:

We basically followed the itinerary exactly, exept that we didn't stay for any extra magic hours. We got up from the motel in Lake City Florida at 5 AM and were on the road by about 7 AM. We actually pulled into Port Orleans Riverside around 9 AM. Being the silly sentimental fool that I am, I had actually requested that Pinkrose from Kingdom Konsultants try to get us into the same room we had last year. I knew that it was a tall order to get us a specific room number so I really didn't have high expectations of that. When we got to the desk around 9 AM, we were pleasantly surprised to be told that they had a room ready and available for us, althought it was not the same room that we had last year. We didn't care much about that and gladly took the room, since I wasn't expecting our room to be ready at 9 AM. Last year it took until about 3 PM to be told our room was ready. We hadn't had breakfast yet, so I thought we would eat at the food court, but as we went past Boatwrights, my wife indicated that she would like to eat breakfast at the full table service restaraunt, so we spontaneously did. For those of you who are familiar with me and my tendency for having a strict plan and sticking to it, you may realize what a step forward that was for me to spontaneously decide to eat at a particular place. I had the French Toast and she had Biscuits and Gravy and we both enjoyed our food. We then unloaded our stuff in our room and then headed over to Ft Wilderness for our horseback ride. One of the ladies was a blondish woman, probably in her 50s or 60s with a raspy voice and I thought she looked familiar, like I may have seen her in a WDW special on TV. When we got back home, I looked at my DVR'd programs and played back the one that was on the horsecity.com channel about the WDW horses. And sure enough, that was her on that show...her name is Phylis, and she was one of the people we dealt with.

My wife doesn't have near the energy level that I have and she wanted to take a nap after we got back to the hotel. I can't sit still if my life depended on it and I can't imagine wasting vacation time laying in bed in the middle of the day...I have to be doing something! So I let her take a nap while I went to the gift shop and then got in the pool for a little bit. It had rained a little but stopped by the time I got in the pool, but the weather was getting a little cooler as there was a cold front coming in...I think it followed us down from Illinois. It wasn't too bad yet, though, but it got a little chillier as night came. After my wife's nap, we got ready to go to the Magic Kingdom and got there around 4 PM. We rode the train from Main Street to FrontierLand, then got off. We did Philharmagic and Carosell of Progress, and the Enchanted Tiki Room as well as go into the shops and buy some stuff, and we got some photopass pictures taken. It was overcast and raining when we went into Philharmagic, and sunny and dry when we came out! :ROFLOL: We had supper at Liberty Tree at 7 and enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything overly special, either. After supper, we waited on the porch outside the restaraunt for Fizzle and Skeeder. They arrived around 8:15 or 8:30 or so, and we stood there and visited until SpectroMagic, and then watched the parade together. After the parade, we all rode Jungle Cruise together, then Fizzle and Skeeder went off to watch Wishes while my wife and I went back into the park and found no line for Small World, so we rode it. Then, after Wishes, we met up with Fizzle and Skeeder at the TTA and rode that together then stopped at the castle for some group photopass shots and then walked out of the park together. It was a great evening and we really enjoyed meeting them and had a great time. By the time we got back to our room and got in bed, it was around midnight.

More later

Original plan for Monday:

Monday April 14: Universal Studios all day, then back to resort afterwards. We're meeting up with Fizzle75 and Skeeder for supper at California Grill at 8 PM. Last time we did Universal, we were done by 3 PM or so, so I don't expect to be there much longer than that

We actually trashed the itinerary that day. For some reason, as I was laying in bed Monday morning (I woke up before the alarm was supposed to go off), I wasn't feeling very motivated or interested in going to Universal after all. And, after getting in at midnight the night before, I figured my wife probably wouldn't care if we ditched it in favor of sleeping in a little and doing more relaxing stuff. But, since she's the one who originally had expressed interest in Universal, I wanted to run it by her since I didn't want to ditch one of her activities. She was fine with skipping it, so she slept in a little later. Then we had breakfast at the food court and she wanted to go into Kissimmee to play some mini-golf and stop at Walmart. So we played mini-golf at Congo River in Kissimmee where we played once before in 2004. We enjoyed it, as we always enjoy mini-golf while in Florida and we stopped at Walmart. Then we went to the Beach Club where I had hoped to meet up with Art, only to be told that he's off on Sundays and Mondays. But we were also going there to eat at Beaches and Cream, since my wife really wanted to go there. We had lunch there and then split a Milkey Way Sundae which was really good. We got to watch two Kitchen Sinks being made which really excited my wife. Afterwards, we walked over to the Yacht Club and neither of us cared much for that one. Too formal and stuffy for our tastes. It doesn't look to us like a place where a family would go on vacation. Rather, it strikes us as someplace where a bunch of nose in the air business tycoons would gather for their conferences. But that's why they have so many different resorts I guess...to accomodate everyone's tastes.

The cold front was here by Monday, so we were wearing our jackets all day. After getting back to the hotel, my wife wanted to take a nap again and I decided to brave the cold and get in the pool. It was fine except when the air would blow on my face, and when I finally got out of the pool, I about froze my butt off.

Then we had to get ready for our 8 PM supper at the California Grill with Fizzle and Skeeder. We both looked forward to this, but were both disappointed...with the restaraunt that is. The company was great just as it was Sunday night, but we didn't care much for the restaraunt. We were under the impression that it was a more formal, classier establishment what with the dress code and all. But people were in there wearing shorts and it was loud and just not the kind of atmosphere we thought it would be. My food wasn't all that great and there wasn't even very much of it...certainly not worth the 26 bucks or so that it cost.

And then, to top it off...and I know that the restaraunt has no control over this part of it...it was cold and windy and we couldn't stand outside to watch Wishes, which I was really looking forward to. The only thing I really enjoyed about that evening was the good company with Fizzle and Skeeder.

That's about if for Monday. It's time for bed so I'll have to pick up Tuesday at a later time.

Just a little addition for Monday that I forgot to include in my last post...after we were done at the Beach Club and went back to the hotel, we took the boat over to Downtown Disney. We went to the Art of Disney store there and my wife saw a figurine thingy that she liked. It had Minnie Mouse and a precious moments girl sitting in a pink teacup together. It was around 75 bucks, but we splurged and bought it. We also went to the Christmas store and bought a few goodies. We got a Mickey Mouse stocking for our son and had his name embroidered on it. And since this was our 5th anniversary week, we got a Christmas ornament which had Mickey and Minnie in bride and groom outfits sitting inside a big wedding ring. On the diamond, we had "5th Anniversary" and "2008" printed on it. After we got back from DTD is when I got in the pool and my wife took her nap.

I'm sorry you were disappointed with the California Grill ... I still haven't gotten around to trying it out. I'm not a big fan of their menu (just isn't for me), and would only make an ADR for the ambience and to watch Wishes. At least your company made up for it :)

Enjoying the report, and looking forward to more!

Here is what we had planned for Tuesday:

Tuesday April 15: Epcot for AM EMH, then stay until 12 or 1 PM, then back to resort for the afternoon. Then supper at Artist Point along with a carraige ride at FW, then over to Kissimmee for some mini-golf at Pirates Island, where we play on every trip. Possibly go to DTD in the afternoon or in the evening after mini-golf.

We did exactly what we originally had planned on the itinerary. We got to Epcot at 8 AM for morning extra magic hours. We pretty much walked right on to Test Track. We did Club Cool for the first time ever and we liked all of the beverages except for the notorious Beverly. We did Nemo and Living with the Land and had some great morning dessert at the Sunshine Seasons foodcourt. We had gotten fastpasses for Soarin, but when we got in line, there was a major holdup for "technical difficulties" and after standing for quite some time we just decided heck with it and walked out. As we left, we saw that the fastpass line was backed up as far as the regular line.

We went over to the World Showcase side and did Grand Fiesta and Maelstrom and then walked through the countries until we got to France. Then we walked back to Mexico and had lunch at Cantina de San Angel, which was delicious...one of my favorite counter service restaraunts so far. I wanted to get some dessert at the Norway bakery, but the line was too long. We ended up leaving Epcot around 2 PM and went back to the resort. My wife wanted to take a nap, so while she did that, I drove to the Beach Club to see Art, but was told that he was gone for the day. I then went to the Animal Kingdom Lodge, and to Coronado Springs and to the Caribbean Beach resort. Then it was time to go back to the hotel so my wife and I could get ready to go to the Wilderness Lodge for supper.

Supper was awesome at Artist Point. My wife enjoyed her chicken entree and my buffalo sirloin was superb. My only complaint is that there was only one side dish and it wasn't that great, being sweet potatoes. But the buffalo was great as was our berry cobbler for dessert.:slurp:

After looking around the WL for a little bit, we took the boat over to Ft Wilderness and about froze our butts off with that wind blowing in on us from the lake, since the cold front was still there. We did a carraige ride at Ft Wilderness which we really enjoyed and saw several deer during the carraige ride. We then looked at the horses in the stables, although I'm not sure where they keep the Clydesdales. They must be in a different stables because I don't recall seeing them in this particular stables.

We got back on the boat to the WL and really froze our butts off this time since it was getting dark, but we had a nice chat with a woman from the Tampa area who comes up there quite often. When we got back to WL, we got in the van and drove to Kissimmee, where we always play mini-golf at Pirates Island mini-golf course. We don't visit the Orlando area without playing there. Usually we do both courses, but this time, my wife wanted to go after the first since it was so cold out.

Then we went back to the resort and turned on the TV, watched a little tube, then went to sleep.

More to come later.
