@BuddyThomas , just saw this on the early morning news here as well. What do you think about the new streaming service for Broadway plays? (link below, from "Entertainment")

I have very mixed feelings. To me, the excitement of Broadway plays is the "live" on stage performances and the energy of the audience. Granted, I haven't been to NYC in a number of years, but I have seen plays on Broadway and off Broadway.

Yet, watching plays on tv or computer might be the only way some others could ever get to see a play, so I guess there might be some good reasons to access this service, for certain people.

This streaming service is akin to POV Coaster videos. It will in no way replicate the theater going experience, but will provide theater geeks across the country a way to know what it's all about.

From what I understand, it is not really worth it yet. They want $15.00 per month for a subscription and currently, they only have about 100 titles. Most of those are London productions and very few Broadway, and it is very Shakespeare heavy at this time. Of course, that could change as they make further acquisitions but I would wait a while - maybe a year or so - to see if they increase their offerings.

Here's a link to a little piece of the production of The Rocky Horror Show I did for two years. I played Riff Raff and it may be the most amazing theatre experience in my career.

Bumping the thread again...holy moly, has it been that long since? Quite a few things have happened to me speaking theatrically: I played Triton in a production of The Little Mermaid and a few weeks ago, I saw Pippin on its national tour (it was amazing, BTW). But there's been something I've been thinking about for quite some time that's been bugging away at my musical nerd brain...

Here's the deal: ever since I saw it on PBS in November, I've learnt more about a show called Gypsy. I soon found out that this show isn't considered one of the greats in American musical theater history for no reason. Glorious songs, flawed characters, and a story that can apply to everyone--what's not to love? But there is one thing I really don't like about it: the ending. In the original ending, Rose and Louise reconcile and laugh everything off. Just...why? After all those years of being forced to perform tacky musical numbers, after years of being forced to deal with Rose's domineering and delusional stage-mother behavior, and for it all to have been solely to satisfy Rose's ego? Why would Louise ever reconcile with her?

This is why I believe the best ending of the show is the ending of the 2008 revival (that starred Patti LuPone as Rose and Laura Benanti as Louise). It shows what it should have shown ever since Ethel Merman first filled in Rose's shoes. It shows Louise coming to terms with the fact that Rose is never going to change, and that she should just get away while she still can. Plus, it really shows how Rose's domineering quest to satisfy her own ego has ultimately cost her her family--first June, then Herbie, and now, Louise. Those final moments of Rose desperately reaching out towards her name, written huge in lights, as those lights start to flicker out...it gives me chills every time! See for yourself...

I also am quite fond of the endings that are open to more interpretation--namely, the endings to the 2003 revival (that starred Bernadette Peters as Rose and Tammy Blanchard as Louise) and the 2015 West End revival (that starred Imelda Staunton as Rose and Lara Pulver as Louise). Will they reconcile, or will they not? It's up to you and what you choose to believe happens thereafter. I just don't like how the original just has them reconcile just like that...

But those are just my two cents. What do you guys think?

Just noticed this thread-didn't see it years ago when it was first started, so I am a bit late to the game. But for what it's worth, here's my list:

All seen on Broadway

Into the Woods
The Wiz
Starlight Express
Les Mis
Phantom
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with Nathan Lane and Megan Mullaly
Kinky Boots
The King and I
Godspell
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Cats
The Pajama Game
Secret Garden
Guys and Dolls
The Goodbye Girl

Daughter has been in school productions of Beauty and the Beast, Annie, and Aladdin and will be attending theatre camp wherein they will perform Hamilton, In the Heights, and Thoroughly Modern Millie-parts TBD.

Memorable big parts in which I've participated-
Adelaide from Guys and Dolls. Other school/camp productions when I was much younger (under 13) but don't remember the parts/shows.

Grew up in an area that produced, to name a few, the likes of Judd Apatow, Natalie Portman, Idina Menzel, and Adam Pascal-there must have been something in the water!

I was a can-can dancer in Paint Your Wagon in 8th grade.
Freshman year I was Laura in Ducktails and Bobbysocks
Sophomore year I was Daisy Mae in Li'l Abner
Junior year was Christie in Little Miss Christie
Senior year I was Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady
In college, I was in the musical theater/opera theater ensemble for a couple of years and we didn't really do whole productions, just pieces from them. So we did things from Pirates of Penzance, Noah's Flood, Don Pasquale, The Mikado, The Gondoliers, etc.
When I moved here, I joined an opera, operetta, and musical group and played Iolanthe in Iolanthe.

Things I've seen:
Phantom of the Opera on Broadway,
Grease Off broadway,
a high school production of South Pacific
A college production of Into the Woods
since moving here, 3 Musketeers (before I could speak Dutch, so I didn't understand a word)
Beauty and the Beast
My fair Lady
Lion King

Someone mentioned being in The Laramie Project...I was curious which "character." My brother was a friend of Matthew Shepard's. I was one of the angels when Fred Phelps came to campus (twice actually...they came when the trial started...that's the one depicted in The Laramie Project, but they came back to "celebrate Matt's first year in He**"). I've known Romaine Patterson since high school...she was in Speech and Debate and involved in choir, so I met her through that. I saw a production of The Laramie Project once and they did a pretty good job.
This is the original Angel Action:

angels2.jpg
angels4.jpg

The first picture is me, the second 2 or of the row of angels (my brother and I are in the second one on the left), and the last one is after the first protest. In the front row, 2nd from the right is Romaine Patterson, and then next to her in the white shirt is me. Behind me in the black and grey striped shirt and sunglasses is my brother.

My post here re. FAVORITE MUSICAL THEATER stuff will have 3 parts:
** I. Shows I've enjoyed as a spectator
1. Phantom 2. Pippin 3. Evita 4. Fiddler on the Roof 5. Annie 6. Shenandoah

**II. Shows I've played the trumpet in as a member of the pit orchestra
1. Sound of Music 2. Damn Yankees 3. Pippin 4. Brigadoon 5. The Wiz 6. The Mikado 7. H.M. S. Pinafore

**III. Musical dramas I've composed for my 5th grade band students
1. "Where in Allaire?" 2. "It's a BAND New Day!" 3. "Let's BAND Together"
Note: a)These are my original musical dramas that are 5 to 8 minutes in length.
b) I'm brave to call them "musical dramas" even though the running time is so short because my "plays" follow
the typical formula : There is a conflict that needs to be resolved / / There is dialogue that presents the characters and the conflict // There are 2 or 3 songs that are solos or small ensemble songs..... and then a closing song that is sung by my full cast //
c) I'm able to have dialogue....song....dialogue....song....etc...and get it all wrapped up in 8 minutes max because my musical dramas use a narrator...I call the narrator the "STORYTELLER"
The Storyteller sets the groundwork for the conflict....later in the play the Storyteller can fill in the gaps....push the story ahead "to the next day" , etc.
I'm a 5th grade band director. This year (that is wrapping up on 6/19/17) I had 79 band students........of those 79 kids I chose 10 kids to be in this year's musical drama: "Let's BAND Together".
Each year I program the musical drama as the next to last song in the Band Concert.
For example, this April my 5th Grade Band Concert had :
9 full band songs....4 solos/small instrumental ensemble performances ....and my original musical drama

I do hold concerts in my shower and in my car, I think I sound great, but the people in the vehicles next to me are always laughing... so that could mean something... ;)

So I can't sing a note, but, I do play the piano..Broadway and Classical mainly, I do have Enya on a regular rotation though.

One more thing- fun fact about me- my son is named after an opera character.

I've been racking my brain to see if I could narrow a list to include my favorite Broadway Songs.. I can't narrow it down.
So I'll create this category..

Song that has moved me the most, and does every single time I hear it-

Pie Jesu.

Does anyone else have a song that just gives them chills from the first note?

@bee I'd be curious to know yours, in Opera or Broadway.

Not me, but DS has seen, or played music for LOTS of musicals. He'is a freelance musician in NYC, and has done musicals He hasn't played for any Broadway musicals, but he has friends who have. He has a good friend who plays for "Aladdin". It's not always a great gig-one friend did "Fiddler on the Roof", which was long lasting, but then "Amelie", not so long-lasting. You've got me wondering-besides "Hamilton", I'll have to ask him exactly which ones he's seen.

HA! You remind me of a line in Pitch Perfect where they are holding auditions and one of the guys says he can't sing a lick and he hates himself every day because of it.

My daughter is semi-named after a famous Jazz singer. We loved the name, but couldn't come up with an abbreviated version we both liked. I LOVE Jazz music and this name was just the perfect compromise. I hadn't heard of anyone being named that in ages...now I hear the name all over the place! It's apparently making a comeback.

I love Pie Jesu, too. And I don't think it's necessarily Broadway, but I love The Prayer.
And I use Phantom of the Opera to keep my voice in shape somewhat. I don't get to use it much now and I've lost some of my range, so I'm trying to get it back and Phantom is great for that.

We can all see from your post above why your forum name is "Songbird"
.....re "Pie Jesu", I remember singing that in church choir back in the early 90s.
The composer was John Rutter. I'll put it in the key of C to make the typing easier
Pie Jesu....Domine
C F G D C F G----

Do na e is re qui em
C.....F ..G..D....C...F.....G---

Re qu iem ae ter nam
E F G A B-C G----

Do na e is Dom in e
C B G E E F D----

Do na e is Dom in e
E F D D D E C---

I unfortunately have no way of showing eighth notes , or half notes....etc.
If you are curious, go to youtube and enter in: "John Rutter Pie Jesu"
*
Edit....when I composed the post the 1st try on my laptop screen I lined up the letters under the appropriate words in the lyrics/but once I posted it, they no longer lined up. I experimented with putting" .... " between the words, but again, it did not come out the same after I re-posted it.

Lol, I've come to terms with it, but I used to get angry when I was a kid. I'd love to be able to sing while playing the piano. I remember feeling like it was "unfair" that I couldn't do both. Luckily I've outgrown that. Ha ha.
