Muppets

I think the public is done with the Muppets. None of the major Muppet characters sound right any longer and they no longer have that classic Muppet movement.

I'm not going to have this discussion until the series is well into it's first season to judge that. I think it'll remarket the franchise to families and give them reasons to care.

Dave Goelz is still alive. But when Fozzie, Piggy, Kermit and many others sound like amateur night impressionists, it really doesn't matter how good Gonzo sounds.

It's not always about voices though. A lot of it is understanding the character. Steve Whitmire might not sound like a perfect Henson Kermit, but they gave it to him because he understood the character the best.

I've never noticed a difference but then again I was never a huge Muppet fan. Muppet Treasure Island was pretty much it for me when I was a kid.

That's a slap in the face to Steve. His Kermit's always been good, plus he's been doing it for so long the character is just as much his as he was Jim's.

Bill Baretta nails it as Rowlf and Dr Teeth. Surprised they were kept out of active duty for so long.

Jacobson has been a pretty solid Oz substitute, but I think his Sesame characters are better then some of his Muppet Show crew guys. I've actually had trouble telling his Grover apart from Frank's and that's a good thing considering Frank still does his Sesame characters from time to time. I wish Lucasfilm decided to use him instead of Tom Kane as a "Yoda when we can't get Frank" voice.

I'd say Vogel's the weakest link in the recasted company right now. He's been fine understudying Big Bird on Sesame, but his efforts at imitating Jerry Nelson aren't that good.

Is there a reason we don't write Dick Tracy's name (and other names like that) on this board? It is a proper name, short for Richard... I'm confused.

I see it all the time, and find it disrespectful to anyone who is named Richard and goes by the nickname Dick.

Steve Whitmire does a terrible Kermit. Seth MacFarlane does a great Kermit. It's all in the voice and the timing. Whitmire has neither.

But can Seth actually act with that Kermit voices in ways besides "Edgy Cutaway Jokes"? Because even Lets Players can do what Seth McFarlane did with his Kermit impression.

Remember, voice acting isn't just making funny voices, there's that other part. That's why Bret Iwan is the crappiest Mickey ever, he can do the falsetto but he can't act.

The new muppet show looks great! The first movie was good. Muppet most wanted was like the other muppet movies just ok.

I have huge hopes for the new show. Especially if they really parody the modern family and office of the TV world as it appears.

Yes, I know. That's why the current Kermit is so bad. I go back to the days when Wilkins was proto-Kermit:

Wilkins was never proto-Kermit. He was created two years after the original Kermit puppet.

Here's some actual early Kermit stuff, from the days of lipsync and drag.

While some characters only evolved because of other predecessors, Kermit has always been Kermit (although he wasn't quite yet a frog at the time) Wilkins was created a few years after the Muppets became popular from their television show Sam and Friends.

And now I see that it is automatic.

Still, disrespectful. Like teaching ourselves and our kids that certain names aren't OK to say out loud.

I was really surprised the filter didn't stop me from saying Hitchcock earlier, LOL.
