Mulan coming to Disney+

Watched the movie now that it is "free" on Disney+. Our whole family liked it. I thought it was a clear improvement over the animated film, though certainly had a good bit of differences.

I thought the use of her having essentially superpowers with her "Chi" to make the movie interesting, but I could see how that would rub people the wrong way. Especially as it blows up the actual historical legend.

For me the superpowers element contrasted with my expectation that a live action version of a cartoon would be more grounded in reality. See also the scene where she catches the tea set, which would have worked in an animated film but felt out of place here.

Yeah, I thought this was maybe the worst live action they have done. There was just so much random convenience throughout, and for a movie that was trying to depart from the cartoonish image and go more towards the legend, I thought the animated version had more basis in reality. I find it interesting that this and Beauty and the Beast were the ones I hated the most (full disclosure, I have not seen all of them), as they were probably the 2 live actions I was most interested in. Maybe my expectations were too high?

I've been saying for a while that this is the reason why these live action remakes are such a bad idea. When it is one of your favorite films, or considered a classic, you have no place to go but backwards when you remake it. It just comes off as a no effort cash grab.

So speaking on my own here, but my expectations were high here because it was not supposed to be like the original. I loved the idea of making it more realalistic with more adherence to the actual story, but this came off as more fantasy than the animation. Now, beauty and the beast I can see (I hated that movie in no small part due to the Gaston casting and the random mother stuff), but for me, its almost the opposite for Mulan.
