MSEP to Return to WDW for 50th Celebration?

You aren't missing anything, and it actually relates to WDW.

MSEP just ended its hokey summer run at Disneyland last weekend, and now there's a six week lag until Christmas Fantasy Parade starts in mid November. They are doing a cheesy Bandtastic Cavalcade in the afternoons as a stopgap measure, since Disneyland's new Magic Happens parade doesn't arrive until the new year.

There's a nighttime Halloween parade at DCA, but you have to buy a Halloween party ticket to see it and they sold out the parties months ago.

Back OT to WDW, because the situation at Disneyland is actually related... this means that there are now two (2!) full nighttime parades sitting in two different warehouses in Anaheim; MSEP and Paint The Night. Disneyland is sitting on both of them, while WDW currently has nothing.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if WDW doesn't announce a new night parade for the 50th is under development soon, one of those two parades will be shipped out from Anaheim a year from now for WDW's 50th.
Absolutely.

Except both of those parades belong to Disneyland...that’s why MSEP left WDW, it belonged to Disneyland and they wanted it back.
Unless WDW offered to purchase either one of them, but MSEP would probably fall apart on the way here and serious storage upgrades would have to be made for PTN.

I remember the second half of the Pinocchio float apparently got badly damaged during it's trip back to DL.

Here's said float during the "Farewell Season".

Bah and humbug. I hope it doesn’t come back. MSEP is beyond dated. I always made a point of seeing Spectro up after one viewing, I was good with MSEP. Just never clicked with me. If Spectro still existed, I’d gladly accept it back for the 50th but at this point I’ll hope for something new and hope MSEP stays far away from WDW.

I keep seeing references to how MSEP gets damaged in shipping and is falling apart and won't survive another trip or another run at WDW. Why is it so complicated/expensive to repair/refurb these floats? Aren't they just some kind of welded framing with sheet metal and lights attached?

Is the cost of repairing an ancient parade going to actually convince guests to book? Only a new light parade might feasibly do that.

Some people, yes. Not as many as a new light parade. However, if the cost to fix MSEP is 5% of the cost of designing and building a new parade, a lot less people need to book for it to be profitable.

That’s not how it works... if Chapek (or other high level) wants paint the night at WDW it will go to WDW.

I can’t remember which one twitter or Facebook but Disneyland did respond to a Guests comment with a hint that the Electrical Parade will be back again at Disneyland at a later date.

Why in the world would TDA willingly loan a parade to TDO, who is notoriously bad with maintenance on parades? If it happens, the order would have to come from high up in Burbank, and done under protest by TDA.

The "best", and I use that term loosely, that we could probably expect is for TDA to loan the MSEP back to TDO with the expectation that it won't survive the trip back.

WDW deserves a new nighttime parade for the 50th. Anything less will be a cop-out/penny-pinching move.

*Loathing the "PTN coming to WDW!!!!!" talk that will inevitably start now...*

Well you know, it's not like they are swimming in cash and can just go building a new parade every half decade.

For the 3rd Quarter of Fiscal Year 2019 that ended August 1st, the Parks division only made 1 Billion and 719 Million Dollars ($1,719,000,000) in quarterly after-tax profit, on 6 Billion and 575 Million in quarterly sales ($6,575,000,000).

And for the total nine months of Fiscal Year 2019 that has passed so far, the Parks division has only made 5 Billion and 377 Million Dollars in after-tax profit. That's barely half of the entire 11 Billion and 432 Million ($11,432,000,000) in after-tax profit that the entire Disney company made thus far in Fiscal 2019.

You can't just expect Bob Chapek to go throwing around money on a new parade like a drunken sailor. His little division only made $1.7 Billion in after-tax profit this summer, and he's got a wife and kids to feed!

I heard it's so bad, Chapek had to sell a dozen shares of stock to pay for his kids' school lunches this month. And Iger put a hold on Willow's new 120-foot yacht until next month! Can you imagine living in such dreadful conditions??

I realize, reading the reactions here, that I am somewhat unique, but I absolutely love the Main Street Electrical Parade. It was one of my favorite things about visiting Magic Kingdom during the years it ran there. I really miss it. I would be thrilled to see it come back, even for a limited run or just occasionally.

Also, given that we are talking about the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World, I could see the reasoning behind doing a nostalgic return of a parade that was one of Magic Kingdom's earliest, as well as perhaps the best known of the MK parades.

All that being said, I agree that for something as big and special as the 50th, that Disney should invest the money to actually develop a brand new nighttime parade. Just doing nostalgia alone doesn't cut it, IMHO. What I would ideally like to see -- although I know this is wishful thinking and unlikely to occur -- is to have the 50th anniversary year see a rotating schedule where some nights feature the classic MSEP and other nights feature a brand new 50th anniversary parade.

Don't get me wrong - I loved the MSEP as well. I just think it's time to put it away and create a new parade. But nostalgia is cheaper and easier to monetize, so...

Two things there that really are a sore spot with me. First, the fact that DL has their Christmas parade during regular park hours, for paying park guests, instead of paying park guests getting reduced park hours and no Christmas parade without paying extra for a "Christmas Party". Second, that DL has consistently had a night parade and another new one on the way next year and WDW gets nothing. WTH is up with that? And while we're talking about it... please no MSEP back at WDW. I couldn't stand that parade and neither could anyone in my family. That music (and I use the term loosely) grated on my nerves and the floats were very outdated. We all loved Spectro. It's criminal that they just let it rot. What a waste.

AMEN! I really, REALLY dislike that the parties displace so many regular operating hours, and I couldn't agree more on your view of the Christmas parade or the music of MSEP. (I do love the floats though.)
