MontyMon's June Adventure to WDW - 6/24-6/29

Travel and Day One:

I picked up DS12 after school on Friday, 22 June and we started south. My goal was to carry enough reading material to get him from Ottawa to the Auto Train in Lorton, VA. Well, he’s a more voracious reader than I thought and the three books I brought weren’t quite enough!

We drove as far as Clarks Summit, PA the first leg. My goal had been Scranton, PA, so we were close, but I was tired and it wouldn’t have been safe to push further. We found a Comfort Inn that was passable and crashed for the night. The hotel provided a self-serve breakfast that included fresh waffles! Gonna have to get me a waffle iron… LOL

We had a relatively short drive to Lorton on Saturday, 23 June. The cars were already lined up when we arrived, but weren’t actually being let in yet. Turns out the train had been late arriving and hadn’t finished off-loading yet. They finally finished around 1230 and by that time we’d checked in and gotten everything else ready, so the loading went smoothly and we departed on time.

The trip was made bearable by the digital movie thing they rent to passengers, best $35 invested ever. DS was content and I wasn’t bombarded with “Are we there yet?” and “What now?” the whole trip. The evening meal was great! Excellent food and service. Then we tried to sleep… OMG! I was thrown back and forth all night. It was a noisy and rough ride all the way. If I managed to doze off during the night, I didn’t notice. I’ll avoid the train in future, but only because of trying to sleep. The rest of the experience was good. Well, except that our vehicle was second-last off the train! DS was starting to joke that they’d left it in Lorton.

A quick trip down I-4 [including a stop for gas] and we were checked in and into our room at the Contemporary by noon. Beautiful room, great view of MK and we were quickly organized and out the door.

Sounds like you guys had another great trip (minus the not sleeping part :lookaroun ). My inlaws took the auto train this past January and said never again.

Thanks for sharing.

Your son sounds as if he has a very good appetite! My DD is 10 and wouldn't finish a child's meal! It's great to see kids enjoying their food.
 As my mother always said about me, "his eyes are bigger than his stomach"! He often orders more than he can eat, but he has the good sense to actually stop when he's had enough, rather than when he's "full". I'd rather pay and have him eat good food he wants than restrict him to only what he'll finish. So if he orders an appetizer and entrée and only eats parts of each such that the entrée would have been enough, I'm happy.

Thanks for taking the time to write your report. I've heard so much about Tonga Toast but had never seen it before your photo. Was that a split order? It looks huge! Hope to try it myself in October.
It is huge! After a couple of visits we realized neither of us could finish an order of Tonga Toast ourselves, so we decided to start splitting one between us. I can manage a half order and DS still can't quite finish his half. I love the stuff, but I find all serving sizes at WDW to be way too much food for me. We only eat twice a day while we're there, breakfast and dinner [we rarely finish either], and maybe have a Mickey Bar or a Churro to tide us over. If I ate what they serve for three meals a day I'd put on way too much weight [as it is I have my work cut out for me to lose what I did put on].

If they fixed up the track, the Auto Train would be great! We have a tourist train that runs through the Rockies that folks have no trouble sleeping on, it's like staying in a five star [albeit skinny] hotel. A little investment would go a long way to improving the experience.

Fantastic trip report. I really like that you had pictures of food featured prominently. The Tonga Toast pics really made me hungry. Interesting about your horrible waiter at Liberty Tree Tavern. I have had middling service at WDW, but never anything I would classify as terrible. Your son looks like a really nice kid.

You know, my wife brings home the bacon, but I get more vacation time. We're new DVC members and I might take a few trips with just me and the two kids in the future. In the near future, I might take one trip with my son next year. I may meet up with all the guys I used to go to WDW with in HS and my wife wouldn't be able to go. My DD is still pretty small (just turned two), but my son would be 4.5 at the time of this trip and would absolutely love going with just me (once he gets past the fact he's traveling with the stricter of his two parents  ).

Thanks for the great report Monty.
Surprised you weren't given the special treatment at Le Cellier....you speak Canadian, don't you?

Maybe I missed it, but did your merchandise deliveries get straightened out?

Yes, we both are quite fluent in Canadian! It was rather amusing when the CM who brought us to our table gave us our "fun fact" about Manitoba, the section we were seated in, I added more information about Churchill Man. being the "Polar Bear Capital of the World" - The bears go there because they're attracted by the smell of the dump and are a major nuisance. He delivered the stock information as though it was a good thing to be the polar bear capital of the world and was quite put off when I made it sound negative. :ROFLOL:

Yes, both delivery problems [the shirts and the cube] were straightened out and I got everything. I'll have to go to the Soarin' store in August to replace the ball cap. :D

Great trip report. Your son was smiling in every picture. Looks like a fantastic time. We live in Maryland and took the AutoTrain one year. Our problem was we took it in the middle of an Auust heat wave, there were speed restriction on the tracks because of a heat related derailment earlier in teh summer. We didn't arrive until after noon the next day. And even though we were crawling the whole way we didn't sleep either. The on train meal was great and we did meet some really nice people. I would do it again if we could find a way to sleep. For now it's Southwest all the way!

Did they have the Le Cellier trivia? When I went, they asked how many provinces and territories there were. (Got it right off the bat.) So, THEN our server asked us to name each of them and their capital cities.

Ended up with a free Chocolate Moose. :D

Actually, I made a silly mistake. I posted something in the wrong section. Whilst I'm here, I'd like to note that I like Tonga Toast.

After correcting him on the facts he provided, I don't think they'd dare ask me Canadian trivia... :ROFLOL:

Can't argue! :slurp:
