MontyMon's First SOLO!

My first-ever solo trip to WDW was not without its pitfalls…

Thursday night I arrived home to find a voicemail that my flight from Ottawa to Toronto the following morning had been cancelled. Weather earlier in the week had disrupted their plane placements so there wasn’t a plane available. The message said if I could get to the airport by 9:45PM they could get me to Toronto that evening and still make my Orlando flight. Their other option was if I could get to Montreal they could fly me direct. Since it was already 9:10 there was no hope of getting to the airport that night. I called and got through all the automated crap to get a message that my call was important to them and that current call volumes would mean a 30-minute wait. I put it on speaker. An hour and twenty minutes later... I got an agent. She managed to get me into the last available seat to Orlando from Montreal and the last available seat back to Montreal [if she couldn’t do both, I’d have had to drive to Toronto]. So I drove to Montreal at 4AM!

Montreal to Orlando went smoothly, got my rental without a problem and headed to DTD to get an AP and TiW card from GR. Had to walk a bit extra because the GR at Marketplace was closed. The sign said they were temporarily “near” the entrance to PI. In fact, they were at the entrance. The CM took my two-day base ticket and upgraded to an AP and sold me the TiW card. I asked her to turn off the biometrics at turnstiles [something I need since I don’t have fingers to scan and something I’ve had done before], she insisted it couldn’t be done and her supervisor insisted it couldn’t be done. I gave up and left, figuring I’d have it done at EPCOT the following day.

Shortly after landing at MCO, my iPhone went black… I was clearly receiving texts and/or email, because it would vibrate every now and then, but I couldn’t get anything on screen! I tried pushing various buttons and pushing two buttons together for a while and nothing worked. Since my plans all revolved around contacting people by text, this was a cause for some mild panic… After I’d got my stuff done at DTD, I stopped a manager-looking lady and asked if she knew where there was an Apple store. She looked at me blankly and said I could get fruit pretty much anywhere. I explained that I meant where they sell iPods and iPhones and she directed me to the Mal at Millenia and I found the store. An employee at the door offered to do his “magic” and pressed and held the same two buttons I’d tried but for a lot longer… It rebooted fine and everything was fine. Who knew the buttons had to be held damn near forever!

After that, I headed to Kissimmee to my Ex-In-Laws’ vacation home. Their guests who were supposed to join us for dinner had bailed early, so there would just be three instead of five at Boma. We left early in case they could seat us earlier [by this time I was tired and very hungry], but we ended up waiting until our regular reservation time. There were only a few birds visible from Arusha Rock, so we were just sitting in the lobby for a while. Dinner was delicious! The roast was Strip Loin and tender as could be, no complaints here. The carver had one customer ask if it was Prime Rib [the sign said Strip Loin] and she just answered “yes”. My Ex-MIL ate “’til it hurt” and absolutely loved it! She didn’t save room for dessert though… They’d never eaten at Boma before and were quite impressed. I think I have some converts! :D

Day two

I arrived at EPCOT about 15 minutes before opening. Kate and Jackie weren’t able to make it quite that early, but were close to on their way. I entered and happened to notice the expiry date on the AP I’d bought the day before was 10/10/09 – I initially thought they’d given me an extended AP to expire on my birthday October 9 next year… Then I remembered Americans do dates wrong and this would expire the day after my birthday this year – Not a good birthday present! Since I still needed the biometrics turned off, I headed to GR. The CM insisted it needed to be done at turnstiles. I explained that turnstiles could enter “K” to bypass the scan each time, but to permanently bypass it for me required GR to do it. He went to his supervisor who said it could be done but required a Manager code. There were no Managers in yet and they asked if I could come back later. They did correct the expiry date, apparently there was a problem with a number of tickets that had been ordered on-line and mailed out. When the CM at DTD GR scanned it, it made the system think it was a partially used ticket and changed the expiry… It didn’t make sense to me, but they fixed it…

Off I went to Soarin’, planning to ride stand-by once before Kate and Jackie arrived. Surprisingly, the line extended out past the entrance! I skipped it and went to wait for them at SSE. While waiting I was asked for information three times [I wear a guest name tag that makes some people think I work there], I answered all questions after explaining that staff only wear white tags. Me avoiding being asked questions by taking my picture in the mirror columns:

Kate and Jackie arrived. We rode SSE, then headed to Soarin’ for FPs. Then we rode JII and Finding Nemo. We starting thinking lunch… We tried Coral Reef but there was no-one at the podium and Disney Dining would only give us a 2:40 ADR. We decided to ead ito WS and try our luck at Morocco, They didn’t open until 12. We went to American Adventure and the first show as at12, so we had a frozen Fanta Dark Cherry each, then saw AA. After that we went back to Morocco and were seated immediately for lunch. It was a really good meal, nicely spiced with a sweet flavour. From lunch we headed back to Soarin’ to use our FPs. Then we decided to do the various movies. We saw O Canada, then we met up with Marcia and Marcus in the queue for Impressions de France. Then we saw the China movie. We tried Maelstrom, but the wait was too long, so we did the ducks… Kate and Jackie headed for Le Cellier for their Valentine dinner. The original reason for my trip was to not waste Kate’s ADR for Valentine’s Day just because she didn’t have anyone to go with. After I’d booked everything, she and Jackie hooked up - who am I to stand in the way of love? Marcus, Marcia and myself went to see what the Soarin’ wait was… It was crazy, so we rode Living with the Land instead. While on LwtL, James let us know he was in the park. We met up with him outside JII and rode that and Nemo again. Then we all met Marcia’s family at the Land and grabbed a bite. Kate and Jackie met back up with us and from there the gang went to watch IllumiNations. As we walked out, I bid my farewells and split off to GR to try the biometric stuff again… This time a different CM went through the process of telling me it couldn’t be done and then that only turnstiles could do it. Then his supervisor called a manager who said to photocopy my AP and he’d take care of it, but it might take a day or two. It worked the next day. :D

Day three

I was supposed to meet Otto and Shannon at EPCOT for park open today, but Otto texted that Shan was’nt feeling well and they’d probably not make it . He offered their ADRs for lunch at Rose and Crown and dinner at Le Cellier! So bummer that Shan was sick and I didn’t get to meet Otto, but bonus on the ADRs! I decided to hit MK first to ride Space Mountain since it’ll be down when I go in August with my son, Morgan. I got in, grabbed an FP and then rode three times straight Stand-by, then the line was out into the plaza, so I rode TTA and then COP. COP had an E-Stop between the scene where he has the Niagara Falls fan and the Rat Race, we were only about five feet in when it stopped, so we got about three quarters of the same scene before we rotated the rest of the way.

After COP I went to use my FP for SM. When I pulled out the FP I noticed I didn’t have my AP! I must have left it in the FP machine or somehow dropped it on one of the five rides since. I rode SM anyway and then headed to GR on my way out of MK. The CM took my driver’s license and went in back for quite a while. When he came out, he asked a Supervisor for help – he couldn’t find me in the system! Turned out he was searching for a surname “Douglas”, first name “Neal” instead of surname “Montgomery” first name “Douglas”. My DL has Montgomery on the line above my first names. Once he found me, he printed off a new AP and said “Look at the expiry date.” He added an extra month!

I had texted Rain to see if she wanted to join me for either lunch and/or dinner since I now had two ADRs for two I didn’t want to waste them. She had planned on meeting us Saturday, but life got in the way and I really wanted to see her again if I could. She was working for lunch, but could join me for dinner. Then I invited James to join me for lunch, but he didn’t get the message until well after I’d eaten.

Lunch was divine! I had a Bass Ale to drink, Potato and Leek soup and Bangers and Mash. My server, a lovely young lady from Warwickshire named Amy, recommended the Sticky Pudding for dessert. Since I couldn’t imagine arguing with such a beautiful young woman, I ordered it with coffee and asked her to follow that up with a glass of Blue Label. Otto and I were supposed to enjoy a nice Scotch together when we met, so I ordered it in his honour:

After lunch I shopped around the WS, not finding much. I got a T-shirt and hat for Canada and saw a nice St. Patrick’s Day 2009 T-shirt at the UK stand but they didn’t have my size. I went to Mouse Gear and got a Mickey flatware set, a coffee mug and a shirt. They had an offer to get a Mickey Mouse watch for $15 if you bought more than some amount I’d bought more than, so I got one for my son. I took the bags out to the car and moved closer to the park while I was out there.

I came back in and the biometric scan was turned off for my AP! I rode SSE and then headed over to Soarin’. The wait was posted as 90 minutes and I had exactly two hours until dinner so I decided to wait. The wait was a bit more that 90, but fortunately they came looking for a single rider shortly after we were sent into the concourse and I managed to finish with just barely enough time to get to Le Cellier right on time for the ADRs! Rain and I had been texting back and forth, so she was waiting when I arrived and we checked in and had a very short wait…

Dinner was wonderful as it always is. We both had Choup [the Cheddar Cheese soup with Bacon], Jer calls it Choup. Rain had Prime Rib and I had Mushroom Filet Mignon. Rain graciously cut up my steak when I had forgotten to ask them. Steak knives are useless when you don’t have fingers, one would think I’d remember to ask after 17 years… We both had Maple Crème Brulée for dessert. After dinner we wandered the circumference of WS with Rain subjected to my longwinded litany of stories. I was tired and decided to skip IllumiNations and just head home. Rain walked me out to the parking lot and we said our goodbyes. I stopped briefly at DTD to see if I could find the St. Patrick’s Day T-shirt without any luck. I did find a nice Golf Shirt with Grumpy breaking a golf club over his knee.

Day four

Going home…

I filled the rental with gas and headed to MCO. Had some time, so had lunch at Chili’s Too. Then I went through security and headed to my gate. The board showed the flight leaving at 1245 as scheduled, so I went and grabbed a coffee at Starbucks. At 1230, the board still showed departure at 1245! There hadn’t been any announcement made in the waiting area. Turns out the aircraft had not even left Montreal as yet! We ended up leaving at almost 5PM. I finally arrived home shortly before midnight. Oh well, I had a great Disney weekend and the hiccups don’t really matter after that!

I'm so jealous that you can just fly to the World for the weekend. Lucky Duck
It was actually a cheap trip. I flew on points and stayed for free with the Out-Laws [They used to be my In-Laws until their daughter left me]. The rental car was $143 plus less than $10 gas and the AP only cost me $30 more than the two-day ticket I upgraded and my ticket for August was going to be.

The drive to and from Montreal was an unexpected expense, but even that is just one tank of gas.

Although I may succumb to temptation now that they gave me that 'extra' month on the AP! It'd be a shame to waste it :lookaroun

Great TR. You may want to keep name tag confusion thing a secret. As you know, it's very controversial. I felt myself actually getting a bit stressed with your description of your flight situation. I hate travel stress.

Last weekend I accompanied my friend to pick up his grandmother at the airport. Her flight was delayed 3 times a total of 5 hours. American Airlines didnt even update the flight status as delayed until 15 mins prior to the sheduled arrival. And that was only from Miami to Tampa:shrug:
