Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club review.

Today I visited the parks and got to go into the Laugh Floor Comedy Club. A manager was standing outside and was encouraging people to check it out for the 5:00 show (it was 4:58 so I figured what the heck). The queue was OK. Not too much detail and kind of boring but I guess they still have time to fix it up (I noticed several doors looked like they were still being worked on). They informed us that this was a sneak peek and that they wanted feedback on the attraction that wouldn't be opening up for several months. Since there have been several reviews of the show prior to this, I will not go into detail but ....

I thought the show was really, really cute. It reminded me of Turtle Talk but obviously a bit funnier and on a grander scale. The jokes that people sent in were cheesy but this added to the humor as the monsters would react to the audience's reaction itself. The audience picked their favorite contestant (Marty Wazowski, Mike's nephew) and an imagineer came up front and asked several questions to the audience. The general reaction was that everyone liked it, and although there were some raised hands for an excellent rating of a 5, most of the audience gave it a 4 (very good).

I will say I absolutely love Monsters Inc. (one of my top ten favorite movies) so maybe I am biased, but I still thought the attraction was very, very cool and honestly Timekeeper s-u-c-k-e-d and any replacement is better than nothing. I'm a CM myself and I'm 21 so if anyone thinks it is geared toward a certain demographic they're wrong, It certainly appealed to everyone including myself. If anyone has questions feel free to ask if any have not been previously answered....and yes, if you do go to a test show, you will receive a fastpass.

Well... I guess my question is fairly simple..

Why was your show so different then all the others which reviewed it poorly and the audience didn't find it very funny?

Also, the Timekeeper recieved generally good reviews for its content.

Merf, you spend ludicrous amounts of time in the park as it is... why don't you just go to the show and see it for yourself instead of listening to the negative comments on these messageboards? We all know some of the people on here sit in their mom's basements scrutinizing every.single.thing to it's most negative aspect. The show was very cute and the only bias I have is that I really like the movie Monsters Inc. and I really like Disney. It's not like they tore down Space Mountain and put this as the replacement. The show so far is fun and if anything all the feedback they receive will just make the show even more enjoyable.

I saw Stitch before it was "finished" and that was a mistake.

It got a little bit better, but it was bad.. And that stuck with me.

I saw Imagination w/ Figment with an Imagineer in the front car taking notes and nearly every effect broken and the final screens stuck at mid-height and stopped for 3-loops in 2 different scenes. It got better and they changed a few things. But it was bad. And that stuck with me.

I'm waiting for them to make it not suck, then i'll try it.

It doesn't suck like Stitch or Figment do. TRUST ME. I go to Disney a lot (I freaking work there for God's sake). I know by now what sucks and doesn't suck.....Narnia sucks....Stitch sucks....Figment sucks.... but Monsters? No. Not by a longshot. It's nothing amazing, it's nothing that will blow people away but it is very fun. It's fun for the whole family. It's not a kiddie attraction unless you make it. Everyone was laughing. The funniest element I think was the guests showing up on the screens.

Before the show started, a guy popped up on the screen in between two women and a caption under said "Sitting between two monsters". Throughout the show, they would ask guests similar to how Crush asks kids questions in Turtle Talk, except the guests would show up on the camera and sometimes it'd capture a funny moment (one girl had her hands in her mouth making a weird face not realizing she was on the screen). Throughout the show, they kept showing the guy from the first original joke and eventually it became funny because they would keep showing him and showing him. At the end Marty Wazowski said something about having the scariest halloween costume ever and that it was going to be.... yes, you guessed it....that guy on the screen. Everyone was cracking up and somehow the guy just made it even funnier because he looked like this big tough guy and by the last scene he just knew it was coming and put his head in his hands. I think it'll be a success and like I said before anything new is better than having nothing at all.

Well..

I haven't been into the building yet though, and for all its touted re-rideability, i'm already a little sick of the "that guy" jokes. They've been mentioned in every single review.

Can't they do something other then the same schitck every time?

I don't know about the re-rideability. As far as yourself goes, it might be something you'd check out once and have fun but probably not wanna do it again for awhile. On the other hand, I always look at attractions as a "would I bring my friends/family to this if we came for a day?" type deal, and as far as that goes, I'd definitely bring them because it's fun and innovative.

Piebald,

Thanks for the review. It's great to hear that some people have positive things to say. I think those who disregard optimistic reviews are not going to change. They have damned the attraction for at least one of these reasons:

Don't like the concept.
The initial bad reviews.
Still in love with Time Keeper.
Don't want "Pixar" additions in the parks.

I for one am very happy to have read what you had to say. As a 22 year old male (who will soon be a CM again), its good to know someone in my demographic enjoyed the NOT YET COMPLETED attraction. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the review. I am a bit surprised they are still running tests right now, but obviously they are.

I am a bit confused by your statement, though. Did they show the entire thing, or was it limited to this one monster?

As for the attraction, I am obviously in the boat that may have "da_ _ ed it from the beginnin", but I certainly do not want to see a poor attraction. We've had that all too often, and it's poor show. It does seem that prior incarnations were not successful, so this delay will likely do nothing but good. Additionally, it seems this is really suffering story-wise, not attraction-wise. That translates into smaller budget additions to some other fixes (see generally IMAG). Now if only that could have been done across the way...

It will probably be at least several months... my Pixar source states that Lasseter wants it redone or scrapped. He's mad that Disney has spent $40 million on what he views as a Piece of :D

Really? This makes me wonder how much is coming down the pipeline and how long any changes in approach will take to come into effect (assuming, purely out of curiosity, you are being serious).

Sounds like they already begun redoing it...

the version i "heard" had "ike" as mike's nephew...

its an improvement to people who get confused...

wonder how much of a drastic rewrite would this be getting... and will lassider watch it this time rather then hanging around his subs 23/6 since his opinions matter.

The Pixar guys that have seen it want it closed, gutted, and have something else built. However, $40 million is $40 million... that's a lot of money to write off on an attraction.

Basically, the WDI guys have been told to fix it or else.

I completely don't understand your rationale.

People on these boards were invited to sit in on tests for these shows, and they came here and gave their opinions. Far and wide, the reviews were poor. Sure, it's a work in progress, but I still want to hear what people thought of it... Just because the attraction hasn't had its "grand opening" doesn't mean I don't want to hear about it and what people thought... They were reviews of the product put in front of the public at the time. If the current product is less than impressive, I've got no problem with people saying so. I don't see why anyone should be defensive about someone else's poor reviews.

It's quite obvious the poor reviews were accurate... Disney's not opening the attraction for quite a while now, when it was scheduled to be open within a matter of days. Seems to me that would back up the poor reviews most have given, no??

A poor review is just that. A POOR REVIEW. It's not something that should be taken personally. And I for one think opinions on this site are usually fairly accurate. Did you see a negative reviews here when EE was in soft openings?? How about the Nemo musical? The rebuild of the seacabs?? No. Far and away, they got positive reviews because they were attractions that were done right. TLFCC is getting the reviews it has gotten so far because it's off the mark and not ready for prime time. It is what it is.

If the show you saw was more warmly received by the crowd and got a lot of laughs, then maybe they're already tweaking it in the right direction. Here's hoping they do it right so there's no need for a negative review here in the future.

Could someone please explain why this attraction cost so much, the building was already there. What did Disney do, put a polititcian from Louisiana in charge of overseeing the finances.

I have to agree, for regulars I don't see this show as being at the top of the must do list. For most guest it should be just fine, kind of like Turtle Talk with Crush.

Thanks for the review Piebald. It sounds like some progress on the show has already taken place.
