Monorails looking aged.

I can't believe someone thinks that awful smell is disinfectant. You may not have a lot of respect for Disney management, but I'm guessing they're smart enough not to buy something labeled "Barnyard Fresh--Now with 50% more Donkey".

I'm not quite sure how they got to smell that bad, but I'm guessing the BO and all the people who just change their babies right on the train and toss the diaper on the floor have a pretty big part in it. I can also imagine that the mold inside those AC units is something that would amaze even the most seasoned of scientists.

I'm guessing that you haven't spent a lot of time in a barn yard or you wouldn't compare "that smell" to it. I readily admit that they have there own 'distinctive' odor, but it has been that way since the beginning. Maybe it isn't the cleaning stuff, maybe it's just the odors omitted by the materials used to build them combined with thousands of smelly tourists, but I still think that the degree of it is exaggerated by many. Yes, it's there but in my opinion it is only offensive to folks that want it to be. To me it's just what the monorail smells like and I don't even think about it unless we have one of these discussions.

I love the monorail smell!

I don't care what kind of deteriorating, rotting, mildew smell it is I'm smelling, I simply love the amazing scents of Pirates, the Monorail and the Poly lobby.

..the unique Poly scent before the silly $1.99-you-can-find-it-in-every-home-smellitzer they have now.

Seconded. The monorail gives you that blast of recycled air conditioning. It's like walking into an Office Depot without the overwhelming books-n-paper odor.

"Barnyard Fresh--Now with 50% more Donkey".
HA love that! I bet that odor has more to do with 20 year old dirty, moldy AC units than anything else. Houses down here get halitosis but cleaning your air ducts and AC unit can do wonders to rid bad smells. There's also the matter of 40 thousand sweaty, exhausted passengers a day using these trains - eew!

I love the monorail. I do agree a little update would be nice, but the nostalga of it is something I love about them too.

Isn't it weird that monorails were the transport of the future in Walt's day, but now they're nostalgic?

Well you're exactly right. The Smell is BO. It is however also mixed with Mildew, and Various cleaning Solutions.

I just thought of this: Ever see people lean against the doors and seriously feel like you're biting your lip to not tell them not to do that?!?! I swear every time I see someone leaning on the doors in transit I get 3 more gray hairs! Look at the doors people. They open OUT. Even without someone leaning on them you can see daylight sometimes where they're shut but not totally sealed. I'm sure a dozen people will pop on here and tell me how there's locking mechanisms, etc. but the monorail's overall condition is not top notch. I'm just not convinced one of those doors won't actually open with adults leaning against them.

Here's a rare picture of Monorail Black in Mark IV (left) and VI (right)

Wow, I've never seen that comparsion. I always thought they looked more similar, but its obvious now they're very different.

I know the monorails are nowhere near as reliable as they used to be and there needs to be a replacement plan soon.

There are locking mechanisms, but this isn't a ride, you could probably push them open if you really wanted to. And this does occasionally cause problems, because if the safety system reads that one of the doors moves even slightly, it will stop the train. So if you're ever riding the monorail, the train comes to sudden stop, and the pilot angrily reminds everyone to stand clear of the doors, you know some idiot is pushing against the doors whether intentionally or not...
