Monorail beam cleaning in Epcot - looks fantastic

All I want is some new color lighting schemes, or even just the old ones back. Purple is the lamest color for Spaceship Earth.

Eh, maybe I am in the minority here, but I happen to like SSE the way it is.

Elegant, grand, understated and classy.

Not all flashy and glitzy like some holiday tart of an ornament.

There is something to be said for quite dignity as opposed to flashy screaming 'look at me'

I'm with you, too, on this one. Granted, I'll take some new color lighting schemes (like SSE used to have in the 80s) and I'll even throw in some strobes (they would look neat during the holidays and give SSE a shimering, icy look :)). But no LED boards and what not, simply because...

Re converting the SSE shell to a giant TV the idea is intriguing, but given the companies recent ability to defer maintenance I would hate to see them install this only to neglect it into oblivion. Ever seen the Earth barge with entire panels out? I have. Granted I believe they are out of this phase where they don't usually address problems, but that mentality could easily return.

...maintenance would be a real pain. Considering they can't even keep the FoN working properly, I don't want to see SSE lit up in a random checkerboard pattern because maint. can't keep up with the LED failures. Would look horrible IMHO.

Ooooohh

SSE with a giant BSoD displayed on it.

Somhow i find that fitting on many levels.

Exactly what I had in mind for the strobes, but not the LED boards...I don't think the screen thing would work. I do think that LEDs, positioned like those on the Hall of Fame Pic would be nice. One per triangle intersection. They could change color or flash in sequence for a show, like in the video jt posted.

Eh, I think SSE looks best with its current look. No fancy bells and whistles, just the sphere itself against the blackness of the night. Simple, powerful, classy; everything SSE was meant to be.

With the LEDs, while it would look neat the first three months when everything is working, its afterwards that worries me... I'm leary of having nearly a thousand LED clusters on SSE. It just spells maintenance nightmare. Strobes you can get away with becasue if, say, 30-35% of those aren't working, you can't really tell because they flash in a random pattern. But if 30% of the LEDs are not working... that just screams bad show.

Wow. Now that you mention it, how true... I think that work work out to be one of the biggest BSoDs. Right?

Excuse me. Now I have to go explain to my neighbor coworkers why I was laughing so hard.

IMO, the only thing that SSE needs is a very subtle, color changing, exterior lighting. Its a beautiful structure like it is, but allowing it to slowly change from silver to blue to purple to red, etc... would be fantastic.

This would be ideal.

Some of the resident photoshop Gurus should mock it up.

You don't even have to go that far, all you have to do is find pictures from 1999 or before (or even just look at your own avatar :D):

Actually the clean stripes you see on the beam are where the wheels hit. The "dirty" parts are not touched by the wheels at all. You will notice the same dirt stains on the lower parts of the beam (curved parts) as well.

The monorail has their own budget and is not park specific. The money being spent on cleaning isn't coming out of Epcot.

Ahh yes Raven...you are correct! I see it now. I suppose it is grime and mold in the areas not touched by the tires.

Thanks for the pics Steve.

Raven said SSE is cleaned twice a year.
That is what you get when you are the icon of the park... JII's pyramids? Ahh, maybe next year little buddy.

Very carefully.

Once the hatch is open they attach a verticle bar from the inside. They can walk about 30' from the top without needing to hang on. Once they cross that 30' mark though they are on their own.

On a side note, the hatch at the top of SSE isn't directly centered in the inner core. It's over the elevator and they have to take a scissors lift to the hatch, then crawl between the inner and outter core for about 20' until they reach the outter hatch.
I would pay to have this job.

More than likely it is a combination of rubber, dirt and mold all of which are pretty common if not inevitable on all exterior exposed concrete.
Huh, so it looks like my driveway after winter comes and goes. :D

I guess, but this is all going off Disney's sad way of executing maintenance in the first place.:rolleyes: If they were to do it right, it would work.

Though, I too, prefer just strobes. You could have those flash in sequence, too.

And I'd be happy with just that.
