Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Yeah and Frozen 2 has 75% on Rotten Tomatoes and that still did strongly.
Yes, but Frozen 2 was just awful.

What makes this so annoying is that it's unnecessary. The Moana choice was made in the midst of the takeover crisis and the awful 2023 box office. It was clear things were going to improve, that (despite the convictions of a lot of folks here) the crisis was temporary. But in a panic, Iger made a dumb call that's going to seriously sully one of their prestige IPs and do some minor damage to the Disney Animation brand. All so obviously unnecessary in a year Disney has done great at the box office.

I don’t think it’ll necessarily sully the IP. Frozen II (which I agree wasn’t great) certainly didn’t.

I actually think it did, if only a little. It (and the related fast, cheap theme park attractions) took a generational cultural phenomenon and turned it into Another Disney Musical. We'll see if this is true, or if it matters, when Frozen 3 comes out.

If people are concerned about the film’s box-office performance, I don’t think the reviews matter very much. All indications are that it will do very well. If it’s a question of quality, on the other hand, the reviews are more significant, though ultimately much less so than one’s personal tastes. My plan is to see the film and decide for myself whether I like it or not.

Oh it’ll do well. Quite well. So-so reviews may eat into its legs, as will, possibly 1) Wicked’s popularity, and 2) the 1-2 punch of Mufasa/Sonic 3 in a few weeks.

You gotta back up this supposed impact with more than just “I didn’t like it,” though.

The hair splitting over the Tomatometer ignores this important fact; the movie is getting noticeably worse reviews than the original and the concerns that a cobbled together sequel would underwhelm proved to be true. After Strange World and Wish, this is not what Disney animation proper needed. Unless the only goal was to make a quick buck.

I saw the trailer for Mufasa the other day and it looks terrible. I imagine it’ll do well regardless, though, just like the awful remake of The Lion King.

I feel like audiences are starting to move away from the live action remakes Little mermaid did not do well as well as other remakes and and the online interest in it seems to be non-existent but of course I could be wrong.

I hope so.
