Except they’re not trying to be wannabes, they’re trying to be the next evolution for Moana songwriters.
You'd think they'd learned their lesson after Wish, especially given this is going to theaters partially to save face after that film!

Alan Menken was quite vocal and critical about people writing imitations of his work for the direct to video sequels, this sounds like more of the same.

Least these new songwriters for Moana 2 have an advantage with Grammy wins, compared to Julia Michaels on Wish who won none before writing the songs for that movie.
So, at least this is one thing going in their favor.

I think they worked on it when it was still a TV show, that's probably why Disney didn't bring back Lin Manuel Miranda.
Right, the project isn't a Burbank studio one anyway, and Miranda was working on other projects including Mufasa - The Lion King so bringing him back even at the 11th hour (when they decided to retool it as a feature) probably wasn't in the cards.
An interesting issue I've seen on social media is how confused people still seem to be about this film; i.e. why are we getting the sequel and a remake of the original within two years? And a fair deal of people have only learned about the sequel in the past few weeks, saying that they hadn't seen any trailers, etc. for it. (Especially compared to Universal's full-court promotional press for Wicked.) I guess the issue is that if you're not really, really into Disney Things (this includes stuff like ABC programming) or children's movies (where you'd likely have seen the trailers), the Moana 2 promotional campaign has soared above your head. Moana 2's success looks to be in spite of its marketing push.

I personally haven't seen much promotion for it either, especially compared to Wicked.
In general people who've listened to the song previews - the end credit version of "Beyond" has been officially released for instance - haven't been too impressed. Reading the "Beyond" lyrics I have to agree that they come off way too close to those of "Into the Unknown" for comfort, which also brings up the fact that the movie's basic premise is pretty much just those of Moana and Frozen II's again, just with X in place of Y. (And having checked out the tie-in picture books, there really isn't much distinguishing Moana 2 from Moana in terms of what actually happens - there's just more characters involved this time, and new characters filling the functions of the ones who didn't come back. Of course that was also the case with Inside Out 2 and that did more than fine.)
As per Disney's recent practice, professional reviews won't drop until late Monday night (the 25th), but I believe the social media embargo drops on Friday.

An interesting theory I've heard is that Dwayne Johnson is too booked up promoting Red One to do a lot of promo for this film, and who else could they send out on the talk show circuit? (I remember a common scapegoat for why Wish bombed was that the promo interviews with the cast, etc. didn't start soon enough because of the SAG strike ending only a few weeks before release.) Also, a lot of Disney's traditional promotional tie-in partners were probably already booked to handle Wicked and other holiday releases, including their own Mufasa - The Lion King, and couldn't squeeze in Moana 2 hype on top of that.

That said, the decision to devalue one of the studios bankable and prestigious IPs by rushing out some hastily repackaged TV episodes absolutely SHOULD come back to bite Disney. It was a stupid desperation move. Moana 2 underperforming would likely be a better thing for fans then if it finds wild success - it would deter Disney from this kind of cheap, hasty behavior and prove the need to carefully nurture franchises. This isn’t 2023 - Disneys has had a very good year at the box office, animation has proved its worth, and the overall situation is much more stable. Moana 2 was not, I believe, produced by the feature animation division, so that group would not bear the brunt of a box office disappointment. I’m not rooting hard for this one.
