Everyone knows you're the one who makes everything happen everywhere. You're the closest thing to an omnipotent bird since big bird found the infinity gauntlet:

No movie is flop-proof but if you have to imagine a Disney movie that is review-resistant (a la Despicable Me/Minions), it’s gotta be this one, right?

Unless Disney / marketing has somehow betrayed us all and this isn't a musical in the vein of Moana...

Ya, I think it's pretty much as flop-resistant as it's ever going to be. Akin to Frozen 2.

I'm having increasing faith that initial trailer views are in fact somewhat relevant to audience interest tracking. We poo-poo'd D&W3 and Inside Out 2, but they over-indexed tracking like the trailer uptake suggested they would. It's not perfect, it's very early, but it is seemingly an accurate gauge of people being willing to show up in droves.

Plus not to mention that Moana is still the most streamed Disney+ movie. So that'll play a factor as well as all those parents streaming it will take their kids to see it.

Look, I know I'm annoyed you guys about Wish, but that was then, this is now. I'm concerned for the fate of WDAS. Of course, Jennifer Lee was step down as CCO of WDAS and Jared Bush took the job, so I guess there's hope.

Bumming around the big box stores this past week and change, I'm starting to see Moana 2 toys on the shelves but they seem to be fighting for shelf space with other Disney Princess doodads and, at Walmart, the oodles of toys that have been produced for Wicked (Part One), which are getting more prominent placement. That's to say nothing of how many other tie-in products the latter is managing. Stepped into an Ulta Beauty and the whole front display is makeup and skin and hair care goodies. And Target stores had branded Stanley Tumblers that apparently sold out near-instantly earlier this week!

I think Disney needs to up its promotional game for Moana 2 if they want to take Thanksgiving instead of coming in a respectable second (though Wicked hitting bigger would be a rising tide that lifts Moana's boat anyway)...they went all-out on Wish merchandise but isn't being similarly aggressive for this. It would be funny if this was the second time in 25 years Disney banked on a sequel over Thanksgiving that ended up playing second fiddle to a Universal Pictures release about a famous green antagonist...(anyone remember 102 Dalmatians?).

I mean I see spots for the movie during MNF and Dancing with the Stars every week. So I feel like they are marketing the movie as hard as they can.

I'm seeing the Wish stuff marked at clearance at Walmart so that should make room for Moana 2. At least the Lightyear stuff has moved to secondary clearance stores like Ross. It didn't even sell at clearance.

Wicked is a millennial play and Moana Gen alpha (with their millennial parents). I’m not sure what demo is stronger, non-facetiously.

But I’m a bit surprised they are leaning heavily into Wicked toys. Is that who is destined to see Wicked? I actually think the first movie will do quite well and the second (wicked sequel) is going to be the one to struggle, after the first exhausts the greatest hits.

I say this as a Wicked fan, I rode that peak in University. It’s certainly no Cats or adaptation that came way too late, but it also isn’t quite coming early enough. A decade ago might have been a good movie conversion time. Honestly… Frozen 1.0 was that time.

No lie, the Disney Princess aisle at the Target I visited still has a big chunk of it devoted to discounted Wish items and there are only a few Moana 2 items squeezed in thus far. I assume by Thanksgiving they'll have an endcap ready to go?

I have a niece who was born a few years after the original Frozen who loves that movie, likes Disney Princess stuff in general, stuff like Descendants as well - and now she's interested in Wicked. Ironically, Disney knocking Wicked off so often over the past 10+ years appears to have primed the pump for younger people to be interested in it because it's in the vein of stuff they already like! (And the film is getting a PG rating.)

A decade ago I would have been excited to see Wicked, but I don't think I care about these "The villain is not actually bad, they actually have a point" narratives anymore. I still plan to watch it but I'm not as excited about it as I would have been. It's definitely not going to be better than The Wizard of Oz.

Moana 2 is probably going to be unremarkable but I like the original and I like the characters so I hope it's okay at least.

I've seen Wicked on Broadway. I really don't care about seeing it again in the theater. My wife will probably drag me to see it. Moana 2 is just another Disney movie. It will do fine without me

I’d expect it on the high end of that range. Wicked they are projecting less strongly than I figured, but the Christmas season is long. Gladiator 2 might be the film that is getting squeezed of the three. Even though it seems like good counter programming.
